Pushing the limits of a class trinity
Relmstein is at it again, this time with a look at class trinity in MMORPGs. This is old, old RPG strategy stuff-- basically almost every RPG out there is based around three different class roles: that of tank, DPS or healing. Tanks (like Warriors and Fighters) take damage, DPS classes (like Mage and Rogue) dish the damage out, and healing classes (obviously) keep the party alive long enough to win the battle. For a while now, game developers have tried to vary up this class trinity, so that you don't just have the same options in every game. In WoW, hybrid classes like Paladin and Shaman can play more than one role, and classes like Hunters and Warlocks have extra abilities (crowd control and buffing/debuffing) that help them be something more than what the class trinity lays out for them. Or there are classes like Druids, who can play all three roles at various times. But the problem here is that while there are some extra abilities floating around, there aren't any new class types to speak of. The reason for this in WoW is because the developers want to give every class the option to go all the way to 70 solo, which means classes that could be total crowd control classes, like Hunters, are forced back into one of the class trinity roles (in this case, DPS). So far, we haven't seen a really pure crowd control class-- at least not like we've seen pure tanking, pure healing, or pure DPS classes.
So let's put our minds to it. What kinds of classes could we make that would do something fundamentally different from tanking, healing, or damage?
Relmstein comes up with the great idea of a "Threatmaster" class-- kind of a whole class that revolves around the Hunter's Misdirection ability. That person could direct aggro from monsters whereever they wanted it to go-- if the healer pulled aggro, you'd have the Threatmaster just point it back at the tank, or if there was no tank, the Threatmaster could push it around to different players, and bounce the mob between them. To carry Relmstein's great idea to the solo game, a Threatmaster class could even turn mobs against each other-- he could use their abilities and damage to supplement his own.
For my own idea, I'd suggest a time-based class. All of the classes now revolve around controlling something that affects every player in the game-- life, mana, or the ability to take either away. But there's something else that affects all players, and that's time. Blizzard has already played around a little bit with this in Outland-- Haste and Slow abilities are making a more solid appearance. But a "Timebender" could be a class that could control time flow-- not just speed players up or slow mobs down, but record a certain reading on a players' health, and then restore that reading at a later time, or reverse a spell and send it back at the mob that casted it.
In truth, we're messing with the primary rules of roleplaying games here-- the reason almost every game has a Fighter, a Caster, and a Healer class is because those roles work so well together. But originality is always welcome, especially in the world of gaming. Is the class trinity holy, or is there room for more roles in roleplaying?

I think if blizzard does create annother class it will be annother hybrid so it won't make waves.
I like the idea of making a monk kind of character since I think it would be cool to have characters who can melee fight without weapoons.

I did ctrl F and searched for the word "bard" on this screen and got 6 results.
I love bards! When I played EQ I played a healer, and bards made it so much harder to go oom. They had this song they would sing to give my mana over time a big boost, which helped everybody stay alive and reduce or eliminate downtime. As a healer a good bard was my second favorite group mate, second to a good tank.
I don't want to see WoW become EQ either, but I don't see how simply adding a bard class would do that considering how much else WoW has in its favor over that game.
I've seen many a group wipe simply because their healer or biggest dps went oom, so a mana over time class would make a lot of things easier imo, so they might have to rethink some of the challenges in the game and buff them.

Personally, I think the biggest issue is that I don't believe Blizzard can add just one class but must add at least two for balance sake or we'll have a crapload of people running and taking up one new class type at once.
I think the idea of a class built around threat management and buffs/debuffing, however, is a great idea and in some respects could help class balance even more. Having one of these in your group could make it easier for druids or paladins to tank etc. no matter what nerf is thrown at them.

I know I'm late to the party, but I found some pennies in my pocket and it's only 2¢ admission...
Sorry folks, great try, but the class "Monk" is boring. If Blizzard is going to develop a new class for this game, it's going to be something that plays so different and works in such a novel and challenging way that people will buy another account for the chance to play it. A melee class that doesn't use weapons goes against the unspoken mantra: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GEAR!
Plus, this new class will probably be applied to the two races with only four roles available. So what do Tauren and Gnomes have in common? Nothing, really. One's a post-nomadic mob of spirituals, and the other's atheistic technocrats with a huge sense of humor. I could walk you through it, but let's just jump to the finish: Count this post as PRO Bard class.
Three talent trees are fine thank you, as Bards would have the choice to put points into Performance (crowd control) or Poetry (buffs, debuffs, and remixes) or Noise (damage and destruction). Obviously, Noise is for solo and PVP play, Performace skills for dungeons and Poetry for raids.
I'd love for Bards to have some kind of non-mana, non-rage, non-energy based form of play using something like on Happiness or Spirit, but I'm only the idea guy. Like how at level 1 they get "Sound Barrier" a +defense buff and "Broken Note" an instacast damage spell. And how at level 40 they graduate from cloth gear to leather armor. And how they'd be the only class to have automatic passive aura "Happy Feet" that gives a bonus to agility, making them a rogue's best friend. And how Bards get everyone's favorite new Fear: "Brown Note", sending mobs howling in the opposite direction with sh!t in their pants.
There's tons of other great ideas, like "Blues" to reduce attack power, or "Hymn" as HoT, or "Lullaby" to put everything to sleep, "Séance" to banish undead, "Diva" a casted spell to freeze a room full of mobs, "Sonic Boom" - see Murmur, "Vertigo" a form of conflagration, and "Dance Fever" a hiLARious crowd control that does DoT.
So if it's all about the gear, what weaponry would they use, you ask? Well, new tradeskills is another thread, but I think we're all ready for Woodworking. So put crafted guitars and lyres and harmonicas and bagpipes in the ranged slot and limit them otherwise to fist weapons, staves and daggers. With Bards, you get a crazy new playstyle as well as a cloth melee class. You CAN have your cake and eat it too. But you gotta eat it with your fingers and not chopsticks.
Yes, it's corny. Yes, it's dorky. But this game has Skeletor telling us to fight in Arathi Basin. If you can't laugh while you kill things, what fun is it? Remember when we'd beat Reign of Chaos and the ending credits would show Arthas rocking out to a crowd of assembled NPCs? Blizzard already has a precedent for musical heros. Arthas was the first Bard.

As much as I feel WoW has enough classes (a comfortable amount that doesn't give you TOO much choice and too much variation), I think that the classes would be better if they were more different!
I think each class should be drastically different in comparison to the others, and they should get cool spells. I remember thinking of Necromancers, and I also thought that races should be better in specific classes. It would be cool if Warlocks could summon the Undead, and have a whole army of Undead attacking, and I also thought it would be cool if classes had more incentives, such as Mages being able to teleport to any town they have visited, as opposed to making portals to go to the major ones.
Also, Druids should get more forms to shapeshift into, to make them more fun, and Warriors should be much more stronger in terms of DPS.
That's enough from me I think :P
