Breakfast topic: How do you pronounce "Medivh," exactly?
Did you know that Auchindoun is pronounced "Aw-kin-doon," not "Aw-chin-do-in," as I've been saying it? As a shaman main, I know that the plural of shaman is shaman, but I always mess up Silithus-- for some reason I called it "Sith-il-us" all the time (it's really "Sil-i-thus," of course). Maybe too much Star Wars. Orgrimmar isn't that hard, and Gnomeregan is pretty easy once you know what it is. But those of you who are longtime readers may remember the trouble I had here on the site with spelling Draenei-- for some reason, I thought it was "Draenai" for the longest time. I messed up Maraudon a lot, too.Because so many of the names we see ingame aren't always spoken out loud, there's lots of little linguistic quirks in the proper names and language of Azeroth. What else have you seen that you were confused with, either with the pronunciation or spelling?

My girlfriend and I always used to call Camp Taurajo in the Barrens "Camp Tah-Lu-Ho"
I have no idea why.

Actually, the "ch" in Auchindoun is pronounced like when you say "loch" (scottish lake). The sound is similar to the noise you make when trying to get rid of a tickly throat OR when bringing up muscus for a chunky spit.

Medivh is pronounced Med-eve.
Jorane Mar 13th 2007 8:38AM
I pronounce Medivh as "Meh-DEEV" - not sure if that's right, though.
For some strange reason, all my guildmates pronounce Shattrath City as "Shat-TRUH," kind of ignoring that last "th" there. Oh well.
I still have no clue as to how to pronounce Draenei.

Sorry, the english degree took hold of me. You may want to check the following source for the plural form of "Shaman."

If you have ever played WCIII, Medivh himself pronounces his name as Med-eev or Med-eve as people above have posted.
I too have had trouble with Silithus (also calling it Sithilus), and for the longest time i left the first r out of Orgrimmar, and I still catch myself doing that.
I never attempted to pronounce Auchindoun, not worth the hassle.
Sepulcher is the only other one I ever had trouble with. The ch is pronounced as a K.

I've never had too much trouble with most of the names (speaking several European languages helps, though). I did, however, have trouble with Scholomance - I always pronounced it 'Sh' instead of 'Sc' before I heard people say it on TS...

It's spoken in the teaser trailer for TBC as well as in WCIII and it is pronounced as: Med-Eve

Silithus, Syphilis
po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe
Either pronuciation is correct. No, wait...

So these guys in my guild insist on pronouncing it "Or-grim-EYE-arr." Yeah, figure that one out.
Even Thrall clearly says "Welcome to OR-grim-mar"... You would think that HE would know.
But noooo, apparently that's not good enough.
Swiftlydead Mar 13th 2007 9:32AM
Ask anyone who's played Warcraft 2 -- it's "meh-DEEVE"
Swiftlydead Mar 13th 2007 10:39AM
(the name is in the cut scenes of Warcraft2 and pronounced by the voiceover)

Caer Darrow FTW.

Lesse here...
I sarcastically pronounce Silithus as "silly this". I had no issues with Auchindoun, but I've not yet mastered the sexy Russian accent when saying Draenei. I find it quite amusing when I see people say "Shatt", cause it makes me think "I shatt my pants."
wowinsider.qsh Mar 13th 2007 9:37AM
Oops, forgot to mention. My favorite name was from FFXI, Beadeux. I pronounced it kindof french, "Buh-dough"... but my roommate... "Bead...oow...cks"
Larawen Mar 13th 2007 9:35AM
Silithus should defiantly be pronounced like syphilis, mainly because that place sucks, and Mid-eve all the way.
BartmanDK Mar 13th 2007 9:55AM
I still have no idea how so say Shattrath
