Beginning Karazhan

I got a chance to lead a raiding force from my guild into Karazhan last week. It went really well. I was very pleased to find fight after fight that managed to rely on coordination and communication, as opposed to old style raiding which relied on how fast can mages, priests, paladins and druids spam their respective cleanse spells. I started out with a conservative group, which to me means a group that's heavy on heals at the expense of damage dealers. This makes the fights take longer, which means the fights are a lot slower. When things begin to devolve, we can all see very clearly what's wrong with our tactics and modify them during the fight or at worst after the fight. This works great up to the Curator, where if the group doesn't have enough damage dealers then the event becomes very difficult.
The instance is pretty. Very pretty. The fights are engaging and require adjustments for class balance, which is great because many of the fights in "Vanilla WoW" had very hard class requirements for crowd control. As it is we can do most events with one priest and one or more paladins. I actually prefer a shadow priest for the Vampiric Embrace goodness, which helps out the paladins a lot with their mana usage on long heal fights as well as improving our raid's damage output. Even with the priest nerfs that went in, Shadow is still a very viable raid spec. In addition I've had a paladin play offtank with great results. I haven't had any druid tanks yet, but only because the scheduling hasn't worked out yet. In other words, this is a great small-guild instance, it only requires 10, you need adequate healing and tanking which can be supplied by multiple classes, and you need adequate DPS. The gear checks aren't even horrible, a group that's geared with nice blues from Shadow Labyrinths, Steamvaults, and the Tempest Keep instances will do very well here.
So how are you doing in Karazhan? Do you have any stories to tell?

No offense to any "hardcore raiders" out there, but Karazhan is now becoming the UBRS of the expansion.
People are beating it, and spreading the info(and wealth) concerning it all.
Proof. Pug groups. I mean really pugged up pug groups using class combos that may be "out of wack" to some.
Usually it means more death, but good times are had by all. Especially because so many or new to it.

@Chadwick
Karazhan is prettier than UBRS. :)
Derbeste Mar 15th 2007 1:04PM
Of course Karazhan is the new UBRS. I don't think anyone didn't understand that. I think that's what blizzard is intending it to be.
Karazhan gear will be the prereqs for future instances too I'll bet.
Halicante Mar 15th 2007 1:07PM
I want more 10 mans. I really like them.
And yeah, karazhan isn't particularly hard, but it does take coordination and people need to not suck. One person not doing his job will really show itself. I have a hard time envisioning a pug getting much furthur than moroes and maiden...maybe a pug with people who all mostly know each other and who have done it all before could get farther, but the typical random pug? Not likely imho.
In any case, it's a fun instance. I wish the gear wasn't so mediocre for the work/time involved, but that's besides the point.

The Curator's voice has to be the single best voice in the game.

I haven't even gotten to a level to start my karazhan key quest yet, but the quest has had an impact on me.
Learned last night that one of the violet eye guys was just north of Dalaran. I had never been to that part of Dalaran before, so I never knew he was there.
I was out there doing a quest, and as I killed elementals and summoners, I noticed there were a lot of high lvl alliance out that way. Half of which stopped to one shot me.
After finishing my quests (and being killed 5 times doing it) I hearthed and just logged out. Looked the Violet Eye up on Wowwiki only to find out these were all lvl 70's who were out there to do there master's key quest.

I'm a 64 druid and I've never actually done any raids. I think I'd like to try Karazhan getting 10 together would be much easier than 25. So what do I need to know about drops, my gear, what do I need to do to prep for the raid, anything useful info at all.
kerrizor Mar 15th 2007 1:24PM
Meh.. I'm not in a guild that is actively raiding.. and my server (Malfurion-H) doesn't have any raiding guilds..
Hey, how about a feature/discussion topic on "how the hell do I find a raiding guild?" :(
Zuuler Mar 15th 2007 1:35PM
@10
Wowinsider has a weekly feature called Guild Watch.
But if you want to search for a guild, go to Guild Portal, you can search for guilds on your realm (provided they have a website set up through guild portal). Most guilds will be up front about being a serious raiding guild (or wannabe raiding guild).

@3: Major difference between Kara & UBRS... weekly raid reset :(
Shat Mar 15th 2007 1:54PM
@3, you can't PUG Kara because once you enter the instance, you're locked into that group for the next week. And besides, UBRS takes less than 2 hours if you know what you're doing, whereas we spent 2 hours just getting past Curator to Aran last night.

@10 - L2Read the Realms Forums.
A quick check on the offical Malfurion realms forums and you'll find a stickied 'guild progress' thread (second thread on the list). Post #1 in that thread lists 8 Horde guilds in Karazhan with 1 that's in Gruul's lair.
No Quarter
Yarr
Evil Deeds
Fünf Bier Bitte
Crimson Tempest
The Final Judgement
Echelon
Dauntless
Any of those sound familiar?!?!?

kara = the new AQ20.
zul amman (the as of yet unreleased 10 man) = new ZG.
hard modes = your new UBRS type place.
Collateral Dmg Mar 15th 2007 5:45PM
I agree with #15.
In my experience in Kara it was easy enough, but we were raiding Naxx, so I'm not sure if an unorganized Pug would do so well. The fights are fun, and certainly allow for every type of raid makeup. We've had successful pally and druid tanks, groups with 3 priests (at least 1 shadow), and groups with none. We've had 1 pally (tanking) or a few of em healing. Same with druids. The new content seems very friendly to hybrids doing whatever they please, as long as they're specced/geared for it and know what they're doing. With two groups a week running, you get some interesting groups.

@13. The guy was asking for assistance. While you did provide information, you did not need to be condescending doing it. These are forums where people can ask for help. Read Zuuler's post for assistance with this in the future.
Pritchard Mar 15th 2007 7:01PM
Shame on anyone for coming in here and asking for help because they don't immediately understand every aspect of the game from the get-go.
I think 13 got the special douche edition of WoW.
Khallah Mar 15th 2007 9:27PM
We're finding Kara significantly harder than UBRS - I'm not sure that's an accurate comparison. It's at least on par with AQ20 in terms of difficulty, and requires a good deal of strategy.
