Nihilum recruiting: females need not apply [Updated]

Top EU guild Nihilum is recruiting a few serious Horde raiders on Magtheridon (EU). And not that I play on the EU side of things, but if I did, I wouldn't be welcome to apply. Why? According to GM Kungen, there are a lot of reasons they don't recruit females, but the one he highlights is the need for recruits to have a "high 'abuse tolerance.'" And a bit later in the thread, poster Awake adds that female applicants are avoided because of drama. And while I know there are immature girl gamers who can bring plenty of drama to a guild, I know equally immature guys who can be just as bad. So to me, personally, it makes better sense to simply not recruit idiots of either sex.
However, in discussion over at wow_ladies, zeolla points out that a girl in the middle of a group of boys can sometimes cause problems without doing anything:
Insert a girl and Guy A and Guy B have a crush on her. They end up bickering, which annoys the other guys who may like her and so forth. A girl gamer can just be in the middle of a conflict like this without doing ANYTHING. Usually in this situation if she says she's not interested, she becomes a 'slut' and lots of fighting occurs.
So perhaps for a group so completely focused on a single goal (end-game raid success) having uniform member base just makes it easier for everyone to get along with as little fuss as possible -- and focus completely on the guild's purpose of bleeding-edge PvE domination.
Update: There's been a lot of interesting commentary on this post, some of which I'd like to highlight here.
Zuuler: "Throw them [girls] into a social environment with a bunch of geeky boys who would normally be afraid to talk to a girl directly and you have problems erupting. I think the same could be said if a predominantly female guild had a few males in it, the exact same problem would occur." I'd like to hear about any all-female guilds out there...!
Deathlike: "It's not a misogynistic ideal for Nihilum to be a guys-only guild; in fact, it's exactly like most sports: there's women's hockey and men's hockey." In line with Zuuler's comments, this may be accurate. Just that the all-female guilds in the game aren't as obvious -- because they aren't competing in content on the level of Nihilum.
Duromiir: "...if the GM has trouble with immature players on this level, I'm not sure why he hasn't /gkicked the worst of them to set an example and kept on only the good players who are also good people. I *can't* imagine that they have any shortage of applicants." This is an excellent point, though with a guild specifically trying to achieve world firsts, I wonder if there's time to deal with any level of potential "drama" and remain competitive with the other major guilds. Time is crucial when trying to score "firsts" and an evening of raiding lost because a key player /gquit could be the difference between making headlines and getting an unnoticed "world second."

Shouldn't this prohibition also extend to gay men, then?
Zuuler Mar 20th 2007 1:12PM
When I initially heard rumors of Nihilium not excepting female applicants, I figured it was for this same reason. Whether they are intentionally causing trouble or not, seems that girls are always the source of it in groups simply because there are so few of them to begin with. Throw them into a social environment with a bunch of geeky boys who would normally be afraid to talk to a girl directly and you have problems erupting. I think the same could be said if a predominantly female guild had a few males in it, the exact same problem would occur.
Or maybe Nihilium is a gay friendly guild but doesn't want to actually say that they are so that Bliz doesn't force their sausage party to disband (like that other gay and lesbian guild that was formed a while back).

The latter of your post was hilarious, Zuuler.
And I guess I was wrong.
roseroyce04 Mar 20th 2007 1:15PM
In this day and age we have homos who who will probably be bickering over some straight 'not interested' dude who hasn't done ANYTHING.
I guess he should booted too.
Better yet, let's just not recruit people since people cause so many problems and so much drama.
Strongmark on Arthas Mar 20th 2007 1:20PM
lol, i wanted to say sausage party! damn you Zuuler!
I think you said it all though Zuuler, good comment.

I wasn't aware there were women on the internet. I assume all female avatars are played by guys.
Halicante Mar 20th 2007 1:25PM
What a bunch of dbags. I mean wow. Just wow.

I think any guild prohibition barring the opposite sex from joining reflects poorly on the character and caliber of the players this GM chooses to be in his guild.
This is a quick fix that wreaks of the same rationale that prohibited women from voting, working attending proper education the list goes on and on.
Needless to say, it seems misogyny is everywhere--thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Sorry to say, but almost every latest content high ranking guild has a lots of idiots and ****heads among them. I was in 2 major guilds of my server and I have contact to the inside of the other top ones and there a so many people that don't know what manners are... that's why I quitted playing in guilds.

Drama? I bet the real reason is shame. A female voice only reminds them of their virginity.
Dave Mar 20th 2007 1:37PM
Speaking as a guild master (of an admittedly small guild) I find the guy players to be way more immature than the girls. Just my two cents.
Todd Mar 20th 2007 1:37PM
A girl with a group of men, minding her own business, in which trouble ensues simply points out the level of insecurity and immaturity of the men. This has nothing to do with being female, but simply how a bunch of guys together and turn into hormone driven idiots.
Thasia Mar 20th 2007 1:38PM
It just goes to show that leading a guild or having a high level character doesn't mean the leaders of this he-man woman hater's club cannot reach 300 in utter stupidity.
Zuuler Mar 20th 2007 1:40PM
In one of my old guilds we were doing a strat run (pre-TBC), and one of our female members signed onto the vent server, which distracted everyone from the instance and caused a few wipes when people weren't paying attention.
Its the same reason why they don't let women in the infantry, its too much of a distraction.
And @8, the big difference between what nihilium is doing and all those things you mentioned is this is a game, not real life. In fact, nothing is stopping you from forming an all women uber end-game guild except your own complaining about a percieved injustice.
If you don't like what nihilium is doing, then go make your own guild and go get a world first and show them up instead of complaining and expecting everyone else to change because of what you believe.
Zuuler Mar 20th 2007 1:42PM
Besides, Nihilium must be doing something right for them to down Magtheridon first. Maybe they are on to something. I think its funny how some people are getting all upset over this. Its a game, beyond that its their guild. They make the rules, not you. If you don't like their guild's rules, form your own guild.

The gay guild was a different situation. Not at all the way you implied.
I wonder if the TOS in Europe is different than the American one. These recruitment practices are flat out discriminatory. If this happened in America it would probably get the GM a warning, maybe more.
These comments degenerated fast.
Shawn Mar 20th 2007 1:47PM
Let's call it what it is: sexism and discrimination.
How would this fly if the guild said they only wanted white members because in their opinion people of color caused problems and created distractions?
It's sad to see a guild do this and it's sad to see people rationalize it.
Duromiir Mar 20th 2007 1:48PM
@8: "Needless to say, it seems misogyny is everywhere--thanks for confirming my suspicions."
Sadly, you're right, but you do have the option of /ignoring the people that push this kind of Victorian "Men's Club" attitude and joining a guild that accepts and respects you as an equal. The guild I'm in is composed of mainly 20+ year olds, several of whom have spouces/S.O.s that play with them (myself included). Maybe we're the exception, but I really don't think we've *ever* had a problem like that.
Please forgive my raiding guild naivety, but if the GM has trouble with immature players on this level, I'm not sure why he hasn't /gkicked the worst of them to set an example and kept on only the good players who are also good people. I *can't* imagine that they have any shortage of applicants.
Dan Mar 21st 2007 12:11AM
That's completely idiotic. Are they even allowed to do that? There's probably something in the game's rules...right?
Halicante Mar 20th 2007 1:49PM
If your guild has members who get distracted when a female pops on vent, then maybe they need to grow the fuck up and get a pair or maybe just L2P while talking or maybe, just maybe, tell the person distracting them to gtfo until you are done. Doesn't seem like rocket science to me and could happen with either a girl or a guy.
I absolutely hold my own in my guild. If people get "distracted" from me being female or otherwise, they will be kicked from the raid. If they make cracks about me being female and not knowing my class, they will probably get torn a new one.
Sure we've all seen the attention whore girls...but they are few and far between for all that they seem omnipresent on the forums.
I stand by my stance that these guys are dbags that I now have absolutely no respect for.
