The facts behind quests and their XP
While the "rumor" that starts this thread is really stupid and completely untrue (that red quests will give you negative XP), later on, the thread actually clarifies a few things, even for me, about quests and the XP they grant at different levels.Any quest you get has a level associated with it-- that's Blizzard's method of determining which quests you should do at which levels. As listed in the thread:
Grey - Trivial
Green - Easy
Yellow - Somewhat Difficult (Blizzard says "Normal," but some yellow quests are more frustrating than others)
Orange - Hard
Red - Very Hard
(There are addons, also, that will do away with the whole color thing and simply tell you what level your quests are-- I use MonkeyQuest.)
But here's the thing, and this is something I had wrong: every quest you do gives exactly the same amount of XP, unless it's gray. If a quest gives 4000xp, it'll give 4000xp whether you do it at red, orange, yellow, or green. I had previously thought that a red quest would give more XP (because that's how it works with monsters-- higher level kills mean more XP), but that's not the case with quests.
And here's the other thing I learned: while killing a gray mob grants no XP at all, gray quests do give XP, but it drops for every level the quest is gray to you. That number is determined by this formula-- gray quests are 5 or more levels below you, and the XP you receive drops as your level rises.
Finally, while the same XP is given for a quest no matter when you do it, it still might not be worth it to only do green quests-- 1100xp is great at level 17, but not as helpful at 22. While doing red quests won't actually give more XP, they will push that experience bar farther (because the bar is relative to the XP you need for next level). As with mobs, you generally want to be doing yellow quests, while doing orange or red when you can (when you have a group willing to help out) and green when you have to.

Hmmm.. Question/comment.. In outlands ive been able to solo A TON of orange and red quests. I can even do the group (2man) quests. I have completed the odd 3 man but its fairly hard usually.
I'm doing those quests at below lvl every time. So has something changed for those quests in outland?

Mythbusters WoW Edition!
When I got 60 any quest from 40 up was worth it to do for just the gold.

Fascinating! I always assumed that red quests lost xp by the time they were green. Good to know.

Yeah, Seper, I've noticed that Outland quests seem to be easier in general. I think it's a combination of the gear ramping up (even green Outland gear is good compared to the old stuff) and quest designers going a little easier on us.

My question is this, "Did Blizzard increase quest XP for pre-60 quests back in the Old World?" I ask this because it was mentioned around the time of the BC release that Blizzard wanted to eliminate grinding as the best method to level and move towards completing quests. So, is it still better to grind your way to 58-60 and then head to Outland or is questing now the way to go? Thank you very much.

The speed at which you can knock over green quests means they're great for lvling.

I personally feel that quests, even grey quests, are still worth doing as they may still give you reputation in any case. If a particular quest is "supposed" to give you rep, then you'll receive it even at level 70. At least this is how it should be according to the devs and patch notes.
Rich Mar 26th 2007 3:00PM
Still seems like the Rep thing is broken. I did a Silvermoon quest on my 67 UD Lock about an hour after I did it with my 14 BE Mage. Mage go 250 rep and the Lock got 5.

Great write-up. As a soloer this info is great to know.

Your theory of what quests to do when fails to account for how many you can do. I've leveled several characters up now and have found that doing 5 green quests is easier, faster and nets more xp than doing 1-2 yellow quests.
When taking characters up from 1-30, it is far faster to bounce from zone to zone picking off the easy ones than staying in one zone to complete it when the quests start going to yellow and red.
It also holds true for monsters - it's much easier to kill 5 greens than to struggle through 2 yellows.
However, most of these suggestions lose value in Outlands where things are very different.

Green (or gray) quests can be occasionally be quite good if they are starters for long quest chains.
Right now I'm having the trouble that my current leveling char (a be pala lvl 50) is advancing so fast that I have to leave out a fairly large amount of questing areas. I guess I'll ding 60 in no time - I´m now at 5 days played, which I find fair for soloing unprepared with the most shitty possible dps :D

From my experience Outland throws in a new set of rules for lvling in general. Questing at lower levels is no doubt the easiest way to lvl, and we all know how quickly lvling seams to go until we get to a certain point. But, I have completed several quests, killing countless mobs in the process and I am barely 25% of the way into 60. If I jumped on a lvl fifty something toon, a lvl twenty something toon, or anything in between and I’d completed the same number of quests killing the same number of mobs, I’d be about ready to DING to my next level at this point.
Now, maybe I’ve gotten spoiled lvling my new BC toons, because rep and xp are almost too easy to come by with the new starting areas. But, Outland is its own world with its own lvling rules even when looking at pre-BC areas. Although, I must admit, I feel like I wasted the past three months playing the new races instead of lvling to 70 in Outland. It is much more interesting.
Oh yeah, I was going to ask how rep worked with those grey quests, but someone already posted that. Thanks Rich.

"[50 pally] now at 5 days played, which I find fair for soloing unprepared with the most shitty possible dps :D"
Apparently, you haven't leveled a priest :D.
Becca Mar 26th 2007 8:17PM
Wow! Really?! My boyfriend and I usually don't do quests once they've turned green, because we always figure it's going to be too much effort for very little XP.
To think of all the XP I've missed out on just because of some stupid logic I had....now I'm bumming myself out.
Guernia Mar 26th 2007 6:08PM
I leveled both a priest and a paladin to 60. Priests, when spec'ed for DPS, have superior DPS to a pally spec'ed for DPS, pre-60. Leveling a shadow priest to 60 was as easy as getting a hunter to 60, IMHO. I only wish I could say the same about the paladin.
Of course, if you mean non-Smite holy priest, then you only have yourself to blame for gimping your ability to level your character.

@7, I'm not sure on this one but one thing to consider is what level your rep is. If you are friendly, you should get more rep for doing the same quest at revered.
hxue Mar 26th 2007 8:23PM
This might sound like a bit of trolling
Some red quest will give more xp because of the process in completing it:
Xp from red mob > Xp from green mob (as there is a lvl difference)
If the quest asks for killing of the said red mob then:
Xp from red quest + Xp from killing red mob > Xp from green quest + Xp from killing green mob
=> completing some red quest will give more xp

Just wanted to point out that often, you can complete 2-3 green quests in the same time you complete 1 yellow quest. (as long as they're not quests where you need to get stuff to drop).
I've actually leveled a lot (solo) by going from area to area and focussing only on the green ones. You complete them fast, because they're easy to do, but you still get full exp for them. And they become green at 2 levels below you, or something, I think.
