AddOn Spotlight: Cartographer

Cartographer is a map mod. In fact, from what I've seen, Cartographer is the map mod -- it provides every feature I've wanted for my various map needs, and looks rather pretty while doing so.
- Flight point locations
- Mining vein spawns
- Trainers
- Vendors
- Available/completed/repeatable quest giver locations (there's a quest I could get at the Temple of Telhemat)
- Levels and caps of instances
- Full map, even the unexplored parts
- Coordinates and distance from the player to where the cursor is
Waypoints. Waypoints are awesome; they will help you get lost much less frequently. If you right-click any note on the main map, you can select "Use as Waypoint," which will put this nice big floating arrow over your head pointing towards the note you've selected; it'll also tell you how far that note is away from you. This is invaluable on a flying mount, since you can generally just point yourself in the direction of the arrow, hit runlock, and go make a sandwich or something. When you get within five yards of your destination, the waypoint clears itself automatically; you can also right-click it to bring up a menu to dismiss it at any time. All in all, Cartographer is a brilliant map mod, and I recommend it to anyone who uses their map.

to say i love this mod would be the understatement of the months.

Actually, Cartographer does show what drops from bosses. At least mine does. Maybe it's one of the additional addons that go along with it. Check the list on files.wowace.com

I got this mod when MazzleUI was suggested (it was included), and it's by far one of the best ones included. CorpseWay is a great addition, automatically making a waypoint to your corpse whenever you die.

Did the developer ever fix the problem with the "fog" area around the Bone Wastes in Terrokkar?

i don't know.. mods like this cross the line between what makes the game exciting. Which for me is exploration and finding you're own unique way there, and all the happy accidents you find in between.
This mod, and others like it, ruin the game for me. Getting help on on thotbott and even map coords dont even bother me as much as "go here follow this arrow". The mine spawn thing too? Sigh.. it's makes me sad so many use stuff like this.

I use Mazzle UI and this came packaged with it. I love it, takes all the frustration out of trying to figure out where the hell things are!

The best thing about this mod is that it can tell you where your guildies are :P

I love this mod but how do you make it look like how you have it in that first pic up there? Maybe I'm blind, clueless or both but I've looked through the options and can't find that setting, please help. Thanks.

the best part of this mod, in my opinion, is the gatherershare functionality. you can grab an herb anywhere in wow and it's location will automatically be sent to your guildmates' maps if they use cartographer.

you can also type "/waypoint 12,34" (where 12,34 are the coords to the place you are looking for), which i find much more confortable than seeking in the map for that point and then creating a note.
cartographer + wowhead = pretty fast questing :D

Hello friends, ckknight here, author of Cartographer.
Glad you like the addon. Too bad you didn't realize that Cartographer _does_ have instance loot capabilities, like AtlasLoot's "what drops where" functionality. You just open an instance and click on a boss to get the list.
Oh well, very glad you like it.

Forgive my ignorance but how do I turn on runlock?
10pound Mar 27th 2007 3:34PM
Im am very impressed! Now....how do I get out of work early so I can go home and try it out?
10pound Mar 27th 2007 3:35PM
@Randomdruid
with your numlock key.

I have a question too. I was considering getting this, but I also use MetaMap, and I'm curious about using them both. Does Cartographer overwrite your default map, same as MetaMap? Do I have to pick one or the other?

Some clarifications for all of you saying this crosses the line or whatnot.
a) you can turn the 'foglight' on or off. i leave mine off so i can not see the areas i have not explored yet.
b) mines and herbs are part of an 'extension' so-to-speak and do not just show up automatically. it will only save the locations of mines/herbs you already found and clicked on.
c) the 'waypoints' piece is also not automatic (except when you die it will make one to your corpse). you can create waypoints, to help you get somewhere as straight as possible, but it doesn't do that automatically for everything. you can also set up waypoints to locations that are not 'notes' by ctrl+right-clicking the map.
d) the quests arrows and things is another extension to the main addon that only shows up after you talk to someone and accept the quest. it will not tell you that you're missing a quest from a guy across the zone that you've never visited.
e) that is all i have for now, but it is a great addon and i recommend it to everyone. it's also an ace2 addon, which is extra nice.

very nice, i loved waypoints in SWG. when i went over to WOW that was my biggest complaint, just ended up getting used to not having them. Waypoints here i come!

Question about this addon:
With my metamap addon I can resized the map to half screen size. This is so I can run around and still see the map.
Does this addon have this function?
ckknight Mar 27th 2007 5:40PM
RogueJedi86, MetaMap creates a whole new world map, which I find inefficient. Cartographer, on the other hand, manipulates the ingame World Map, which is much more efficient. They likely won't cooperate nicely with each other, but I doubt you'd want to keep MetaMap around after you've tried out Cartographer.
Aaron, there are many options to change the look and feel of the map. That is one of them.

Whoa! This can replace Gatherer?! If so, any pros and cons of doing so?
