Smacked with the banhammer, or: It came from the Customer Service Forum
Like most online games, Blizzard has the power to suspend or ban people from WOW, and they're not shy about using it. Half of the Customer Service Forum is full of people complaining about their banninations. Bannations? Bans. Of course, no one in the CSF has ever, ever done anything wrong with their account, and tend to go to ludicrous extremes to deny they've ever cursed, shared accounts, or gone AFK in the battlegrounds.
The simple 3-hour or 3-day suspension is probably the most common form of ban. So you swore at someone, discussed the uses of a [Huge Brown Sack] in trade channel, or threatened to sic your homophobic congressman dad on them -- you get three hours or days to think about what you did wrong, and probably plot some revenge. There's also the "temporary permanent ban," which is what Blizzard uses when someone's account is hacked. You're "permanently banned" until they can figure out who really owns the account and how it was accessed. Then the ban is usually reversed, and stolen items are restored. The latter has happened to a couple guildmates of mine, and most were just happy to get their stuff back.
The true permabans are usually reserved for the worst of the worst offenders -- although theoretically, any number of common activities (like account-sharing) can result in a permaban. Speedhacking, botting, gold farming, powerleveling, and of course removing walls in dungeons can get your account banned forever. Note: screaming, threatening, quoting the Bill of Rights, or being hideously rude to Blizzard will not get you your account back.
Have you ever been banned, suspended, or warned for your in-game behavior? Do you have any funny or sad banning stories from your realm? Do you think Blizzard is too tough or too lenient with their banhammer?

Yes, I was temp-perma banned. As it turns out I had a keylogger in my system from an addon downloaded at Curse Gaming. I had no idea, went to log in one night and got the banned message. I then went to the Armory and knew I'd been hacked as my characters had nothing on them except no sell trinkets...naked, cold and alone in black cyberspace. My account was closed for 7 days while they investigated the matter. When it was was reinstated, characters were reactivated and all the gear and gold returned via in game mail.
Still sucked though! I had gotten into a nice groove with some guildies my level int he outlands, when I came back we couldnt' group together, they had moved onto the next zone level. :/ Ah well, at least I got my stuff back!

My friend almost got Permabanned for uttering "racial" slurs. He made fun of the french in front of french people and he got reported. It's all good though cuz the idiot who reported him now is gonna have to lvl back to 70 cuz he did something equally stoopid by making fun of Moslims in front of one(and one of my buddies guildies) and he is now Permabanned as a result! LOL

About a month ago i was banned mid black morass run. the email i received cited "exploitation of the World of Warcraft economy or for being associated to accounts which have been closed for intended exploitation." needless to say i replied with a wtf? a week and a half later, they replied back and reinstated my account, while never actually explaining why i'd been banned in the first place. their reply email was even more vague then the initial one. regardless, i left it alone and went back to playing.

I've never been banned, but wou know who should be? Those high level ass-tards that go to low levels to kill quest turn in NPC's over and over and over again just to grief. Blizz won't do anything about them.

#3 Bryan K ^^
I got the same "exploiting the economy/aiding exploiters" letter as well. I was baffled as I hadn't. And although I had sent a few WTF letters to them, when it was resolved I got a sort of vague response too, but it did note that upon investigation my account had been breached.

Anyone on my server, Malfurion, probably knows about the famous "stain" accounts.
He started as "winestain," was banned, created a "blackstain" account, was banned, and now is "magestain."
This guy was, and still is, the biggest spammer of the trade channel (and the lfg channel when it was around). He is constantly looking for attention by saying the most random and idiodic things ever.
I enjoy watching people feed this troll on a daily basis. I reported him back in his winestain days, but now he is much more careful about what he says. I guess for him, all the trolling is worth buying more copies of WoW each time he is banned.

I've gotten a single warning, for 'inappropriate language'. Sad thing is, it was generated by an add-on!
MazzleUI has an annoying feature - the first time you set up your UI with every character, it yells about your character having a 'Mazzlegasm'. One of my bank alts in Silvermoon got reported for this.
The author of the addon has stated in no uncertain terms that he'll never remove the (pseudo)offensive language, so I've taken to Mazzleling in Ragefire just to make sure no ones ears get burned.

Doodzin.. i think blizzard also realizes that people like him are good for business. they get banned, and buy new copies of WoW.

I got a funny story...
My buddy and I were in STV Running a quest. We dont invite anyone else to our groups EVER unless its a guild mate. (and the lowbie guildmates are blah at best).
So she got mad and went around aggroing every mob in the cave and bringing em back to us. Wiped us once. She then tried 2 more times but we survived. So I reported her for harrasement and other things. She Pm'd me and I said something to the affect of WTH is your problem learn to play! She reported me and I got a warning!!
So I first put in a petition to figure out why I got one. He walked me through and I protested but then he pretty much stopped talking to me. So I put in another petition and talked to someone else. He was really nice walked me through what happened why and what could happen. Then said something to the affect of yah you were probably in the good.
Ive watched myself ever since. But in my heart I know I've done nothing wrong.

I received an email warning for sending a tell to a Trade channel spammer:
/t spammer : WTS you a [Big Can of STFU]
I tried to contest the warning by asking them to tell me how they interpreted STFU, as any acronym is subject to interpretation.
I wonder if I had simply asked, "Is your name Stephoo?" if I would have still been warned.
Good thing no one in the guild every reports guildchat...

We had a guildie who lost her account a month or two ago, apparently because of buying gold. That was a new one for me... I didn't realize Blizzard ever took away accounts for that reason. She bought gold more than a year ago, and is a model WoW citizen otherwise. Blizzard was vague on the reason for the ban, and that's the only thing she can think of that would have cost her the account. No suspension, no warning, just 3 very high-level toons up in smoke....
Anyone else have a story like this?

I wish I could access the WoW forums from work. I want to know what the idiot said trying to quote the Bill of Rights, rofl.

I was questing in Wetlands with my first toon when I got a pst from a GM telling me that my name was in violation. I pleaded them to leave it be and claimed that I was Native American to no avail.

I was once warned because I said "stfu I'll slit your throat" to a good friend of mine in a tell. He was like "Zomg reported!" and I didn't believe him, but I guess I provoked him enough about it that he reported me. Was really funny, seeing a warning letter in my mailbox right next to a CoD from his bank alt...

The funniest one I ever saw, and was part of, was a guy following me around the Barrens and threatening to report me for "questing out of turn".
He thought that you had to take it in turns to do quests.
So I start killing mobs for the quest and up pops a load of whispered messages from this moron saying how he's gonna report me and i'm gonna lose my account because he'll tell the GMs I've been selling gold etc.
Then he started on with the slurs, and I'm no stranger to bad language, but descriptions of what he'd do to me (I'm female) if he ever found me were too much so I reported him.
He got banned. Whined about it on a 'friends account' in Ogrimaar and got loudly laughed off the server. Good times.
Most stupid one though was a guildie who got temporarily banned for 'harrassing behavior'. His account got reinstated, no apology from Blizz and no word as to what they thought had happened either.

one word: Daish... anyone on Destromath knows exactly what I'm talking about. HUGE spammer, legendary I would say . . . I also will take this moment to talk down high lvl toons that runa round and kill lowbie mobs at the startzones. Had a guy do that to me when I was killing the "familiars" in the cave... kept killing them after I would hit them once, or before I even got a shot off. don't these guys have better things to do? He was only lvl 30-something I think . . . get a mount!

My friend used a gold farming service a LONG time ago........a little while ago after about a year after the farm he got all his stuff and characters deleted. Now he went to Bliz and asked for them to reverse the deletion and stuff.....sure enough he got his guys back but as for his Warlock he never got his epics and i think maybe an orange instead blizz gave him crappy green stuff and 6lvls of fully rested experience to his char.
