Not quite a set: Purple Judgement
I really wanted to call this article "The Peculiar Purple Paladin of Porcupine Peak", but aside from being fairly non-descriptive, I was afraid the reference would be lost. Instead, I decided to just state exactly what we're looking at over on the right.
I hope we can all agree that the Paladin Tier 2 Judgement set is a solidly designed set of gear, which really breathed some life and energy into the Paladin class, stylistically speaking. As a paladin myself, it became my whole world. It was the single reason I played with my online dress-up doll, err.. paladin. When I had finally achieved the set, I felt satisfied and complete. Then the Burning Crusade came. Try as I might to not do it, I've had to put several pieces of judgement into storage as I'm leveling from 60 to 70. My poor little pally now looks like a hodgepodge of pieces from a bargain bin.
Luckily for those of us who plan to take our (forced?) places in a raid group upon hitting 70, there's a bit of a black light at the end of the tunnel.
While "Purple Judgement" isn't a fully realized set, with bonuses and a name, it is a grouping of very viable healing gear for the level 70 paladin. If you're keen on maintaining that Judgement look, and you're okay with being a healer at level 70, you'll want to seek out the following pieces, from helm to boot:
The Mask of Pennance
Drops From: Mekgineer Steamrigger in The Steamvaults
Justice Bearer's Pauldrons
Drops From: Omorr the Unscarred in Hellfire Ramparts (HEROIC)
Breastplate of Many Graces
Drops From: Grandmaster Vorpil in the Shadow Labyrinth
Virtue Bearer's Vambraces
Drops From: Broggok in the Blood Furnace (HEROIC)
Life Bearer's Gauntlets
Drops From: Nazran/Vazruden reward box in Hellfire Ramparts (HEROIC)
Girdle of Many Blessings
Drops From: Rokmar the Crackler in Slave Pens (HEROIC)
Cassock of the Loyal
Drops From: Hungarfen in the Underbog (HEROIC)
Boots of the Watchful Heart
Drops From: Captain Skarloc in Old Hillsbrad (HEROIC)
The total set bonuses come to:
Armor: 6641
Stamina: 192
Intellect: 206
Healing: 442
MP5: 41
Spell Crit: 79
So, what say you all? Are looks important to you and, if so, is this a non-set worth compiling? If not the full set, which pieces would you go for?

Even as a Ret Pally, I would love to have this healing set for my occasional back-up healing. I just wish it were more like the Judgement set (Ret spec gear). There are plenty of Ret items in the game though, so I am not too upset. I like being able to switch roles when needed.

I know there's other sets like this. Rogue Tier 2 has the beginnings of two off-color sets (a blue one and a grey one). Perhaps WoW insider can figure the rest of these tier 2 v. 2.0 sets? (Green wrath, etc.)

I shelved my paladin shortly after 70 because, even though I love healing, I didn't feel like running the Heroics to get most of this set. That and the no-set-bonuses thing really bugged me, especially since everybody claims we're the best healers. Didn't seem like Blizzard really itemized the +heal plate (+dmg/heal doesn't count IMO... since that tends to have more junk like +str that a healadin doesn't really need).
It's an awesome set but way too heavy on the Heroics to justify not being a SET.

i'm levelling my now level 35 paladin for two reasons.
1) i want to try out something other than dps in raids
2) judgement is the best looking set in the game..pink, original, purple, green..whatever colour.
That is all.
(oh and @2...you shelved your paladin because you didn't want to run heroics to get this "set" of gear even though every other class has a recoloured (or two) "set" with no set bonuses?...you're an idiot. My rogue has 5/8 "black bloodfang" and 3/8 "gold nightslayer"....lots of it from heroics. I didn't get it for the looks or any other reason than the drops i had got happened to be recoloured old tier sets. Once again...you are an idiot)

This "set" was researched by a poster on the pally forums, I've had the post bookmarked for weeks now as reference (and copy-pasted into a document in case it disappears mysteriously). If I weren't at work I'd post the link here. Perhaps someone else has it?

I love being a Ret Pally with a full +healing gear in the bags that give me +818 to healing. (1600 flash heal crits)
As for my dps setup, i'm torn which path puts out the most dps. should I go with all +str gear, or go with all the gear that has +dmg/healing stats (most of those have +0 to str)
jdkissell Apr 5th 2007 2:17AM
@3... This is basically the only +heal plate that you can find in the Outlands dungeons pre-raid. Not counting +dmg/heal, which there's more than enough of... strictly +heal, this is it. So for them to make it not be an actual set, that's a dealbreaker in my book, especially when most of it drops in the Heroics. One of our core roles is healing, and the sets don't reflect that.
That's what I was trying to say, I'm sorry that you had to resort to calling me an idiot. For someone who's only 35 on their pally and "wants to try out something other than dps" to call me an idiot over wanting the itemization to be there after leveling from 10-70 with a holy build and seeing an overall lack of itemization for pally healing outside of raids... well, good luck spamming FoL for your guild.

Im full holy spec, and have been running heroics for a couple weeks now trying to get the rest of this set. Even without some of the most important pieces, I am already over +1500 healing, and all my gear is plate, and only my boots are green. With some effort you paladins can get high +healing gear without constantly running heroics. I also have the +319 Healing Epic BoE mace with +81 healing enchant, so that helps a little too. :)

This "set" is outstanding despite the set bonuses and I can't wait to start assembling it (I'm lvl 66 now). I'm very excited to be able to get the "Judgement Set" without raiding as I will never have the time to raid. I love the idea that Blizz decided to offer these popular "sets" to us non raiders and hope they continue to think of the vast majority of players who cannot find the time to raid.
My question though is, "are there BC dungeon sets that do not require raiding other than these non-sets?
"

As a pally I would like to see a set of gear that increases casting time for shields and not allow healing while shielded. I feel we are just out of balance with the rest of the toons. I feel like an elite when it takes 5 toons to down me in AV. Please lets find a way to nerf us some with gear sets. (slyly Cylntmoon, not a rogue)

Completely off-topic: Was the reference to Mark Twain's short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County"?

its more then just judgement

I went on a Shattered Halls run with a ret pally and a BM hunter. Lord, did that take forever. Pallies heal or tank, and hunters well, solo.
Argent Apr 5th 2007 10:42AM
the blood-red take on lawbringer is a really cool looking set, actually (especially for ret paladins.)
the armor from kara that uses the same model is less fortunate when it comes to the colorization -- the gold and puke-green just isn't working for me.
as for set vs. no set -- really, who cares. show me an overwhelmingly useful healing paladin setbonus that makes us even have a discussion like that. T4 has some weak setbonuses. it's only when you get to T5 that there is room for such talk -- and by that time, blue gear won't matter much.
Derbeste Apr 5th 2007 10:55AM
I feel a little ashamed and humiliated to admit I know the reference.
It's really:
The Paculiar purple pieman of porcupine peak.
He's the villian in the "Strawberry Shortcake" cartoons back in the '70s.
Aldarian Apr 5th 2007 11:04AM
The Rogues have a similar "set" if they farm Kara for a while. The "set" is a visual reworking of the Tier2, but now in Browns and Whites. Its made up of the following items:
Chestguard of the Conniver
Skulker's Greaves
Edgewalker Longboots
Bladed Shoulderpads of the Merciless
Gloves of Dexterous Manipulation

@3 "i want to try out something other than dps in raids"
You really should look at a good Ret Pally and think again about not being on DPS. I can easily out DPS a mage or warlock in an instance. If all you want to do is heal, more power to ya. Just don't go spreading the idea that a Pally cannot fill other roles as well.
In a 10-man raid, I will finish around 2nd or 3rd for DPS (Hunter and a good Rogue can still out-DPS me). As for burst damage...pretty hard for any class to out Damage me in less than 3 seconds. A Mage and Warlock can hit harder with Pyro/Fireball/Shadowbolt if speccd correctly, but it still takes them longer to get that spell off, and I can continue to pound someone more times at a faster rate. The downside is my mana will run out faster, and I will lose that damage bonus, where they can continue. However, if the group is working good together, the mob/boss if long dead before I run out of mana.
Cormack Apr 5th 2007 2:04PM
Karl, any chance we could get an armory link to your toon? I'm curious to see how you've geared yourself so that you could out DPS a mage or warlock. Bonus points for linking to those mages/warlocks.
