Why can't we enchant offhands?

Pup of Cho'gall asks a very sensible question on the WoW General Forums: since the enchants for one-handed and two-handed weapons are often different, and since you can enchant shields, why can't casters enchant their offhands?
Tseric responds by saying that offhands are a pretty broad category, and that there would have to be a lot of different enchants to give casters all the options they might want in that slot. That seems like a pretty weak excuse to me, and most of the forum posters seem to agree, noting that they'd be happy to get some of the enchants available for shields on their offhands. Stamina and intellect are particularly useful to caster classes, and it wouldn't be too hard to make a +damage enchant for shields or offhands.
Someone else suggests later in the thread that offhands aren't enchantable because their ilevel budget doesn't factor in enchants, which would make a lot more sense than the official explanation. I'd compare the stats between an ilevel appropriate 2-hander and a one-hander plus offhand, but I'm sadly not a caster and would probably muck it up. It's also true that most of the decent end-game caster enchants just specify a "melee weapon," not a one-hander or two-hander. Still, it's an interesting debate.
Several casters I know use mostly two-handed weapons just because they're sick of getting an offhand or a one-handed weapon, waiting for an appropriate item to use in the other slot, and then having limited enchantments. Admittedly, offhands have the postive of usually looking really cool, but they're still kind of a pain compared to the big clunky two-handers.
Do you think shield enchants should be expanded to include offhands? What kind of enchants would you like to see on offhand items?

I'd be pretty happy being able to enchant wands. Since guns can have scopes equipped to increase the performance, why can't wands have jewel slots, at least? Well... maybe some day...

I use 1h/offhand combination. Even though it typically offers less int, the spell dmg + crit from the combo ALWAYS outdoes the 2h counterparts. I typically sacrifice the int/stam for the dps. That's my 2 copper.

As a enchanter, I really would like a more unified enchanting skill.
I can enchant some offhand items. Like swords that only go in offhand and shields, yet other items I cannot. Outrages! Lets hope this gets fixed when they re-tune the professions in the future content patches.

I am the same way as #2
I would love enchants on offhand for any stat really. I would probably use Spell Damage or Crit.
I also like the idea of enchanting wands.

Mos Def on this. As a 70 Priest I use a 1h mace/offhand combo but hand to wait for the right combination of items to drop before I could do so without sacrificing stats.
An ability to enchant wands would also be a big plus which I think would be fair as well. We dont get all the time pets like locks, cant wear mail like shammy's, plate like pally's, or don't do uber damage like Mages.
Lets be fair Blizzard, throw us a bone here! I'm tired of being an ultra-squishy, sta-puff marshmellow, one-hit wonder in instances. Allow the class a little survivabilty and make the game fun to play for priest at the same time. Otherwise get rid of this broke class.

How about enchanting trinkets? Whoo, that would add some new life in some otherwise old trinkets.

Consider also that we don't get any of the shiny new void crystal enchants that work for hunters.
Battlemaster? Mongoose? Nope.
The two topend scopes (+12 damage/+28 crit rating) are fairly nice, but also consider that 28 crit rating is nothing compared to being able to proc a +120AGI/+speed bonus on hit.

i made this same point months ago here on this blog site and on the wow forums. enchanting is a severely broken system, it has some good thingss, but really has a lot of bad things too. it is about 50/50 in my opinion, but it needs to be more like 80/20 at least to be really viable.
wands need to be enchantable, period! as well as shirts, head items, shoulder items, and off hand items.
and more flexibility needs to be added to enchating, like enchants that can be sold on the AH, and finding enchanting dusts and essences on mobs, most likely elementals, casters, and bosses, and mists that could float in the air (sort of like mining nodes).
etc...etc...etc...i could go on forever with improvement ideas....
let me know what you think...
