2.1 PTR notes, abridged version
The 2.1 PTR notes have now been released for all to see. However, they are very long, at about 9500 words. For comparison, that's about 40% as long as Kafka's "Metamorphosis" (and almost as depressing, depending on what class you're playing). So I thought it might be helpful to make a condensed version, selecting only the changes that seemed relatively significant.Note that I left out a ton of changes -- this is only 10% of the patch notes -- in order to make this skimmable. It's still definitely worth checking out the full patch notes if you have a few minutes on your hands. And if you want the short, short version: Epic flight form for Druids, Hunters buffed in damage and pet survivability, Paladins' Illumination cut by half, Rogues get automatic Improved Sap.
Edit: added a few things people pointed out in the comments. Thanks guys!
- General
- Nether Drakes are now in the game and can be gained by continuing the
Netherwing faction and quest line. - Glancing Blows have significantly less of a chance to occur during a
player's melee attacks when targets are near the player's level. - Spell Haste: The amount of spell haste rating needed per percentage
of haste has been increased substantially. However, spell haste will
now affect channeled spells, increasing the rate of their effects and
decreasing their total duration. The same amount of damage/healing
per casting will occur, but will take less time. - Druid:
- The "Druid Epic Flight Form" is now available through a series of
quests. - "Mangle(Bear)": Damage increased by 15%, but bonus threat reduced so
that overall threat generation will be unchanged. - "Subtlety" (Restoration Talent) now applies to all spells, not just
healing spells. - Hunter:
- A new "Avoidance" ability can now be taught to hunter pets. This
effect reduces the damage they take from area of effect spells and
abilities. - "Expose Weakness": The chance for this talent to trigger has
increased to 33/66/100% chance at 1/2/3 talent points. - "Hunter's Mark": This ability now becomes stronger each time the
target is struck by a ranged attack. - Replaced the current "Mend Pet" channel spell with an instant cast
heal over time. - Mage:
- "Ice Block": This ability no longer makes mages immune to "Weakened
Soul" from "Power Word: Shield". However, using this ability now
causes "Hypothermia", making the mage unable to cast "Ice Block"
again for 30 sec. - Priest:
- "Shadow Weaving" (Shadow): Effect reduced by 1% per rank.
- "Shadow Word: Death": Cooldown increased to 12 sec.
- Paladin:
- "Illumination": This talent now only gives 50% of the mana cost of
the critical heal. It also now returns the correct amount of mana
when used with ranks 4 and 5 of "Holy Shock" - "Ardent Defender" (Protection Talent) now reduces damage taken by
6-30% when below 35% health. - "Sanctity Aura" now increases all damage caused by affected targets
by 1/2% and no longer increases healing done to affected targets. - Rogue:
- "Sap" now automatically gains the full benefit of "Improved Sap".
- Rogue poisons no longer have charges.
- Warrior:
- "Charge", "Intercept" and "Intervene" now suppress all Slowing
effects while charging the target. [This is true for Druids' charge as well] - "Flurry", Fury Talent, now increases attack speed by 5/10/15/20/25%,
reduced from 10/15/20/25/30. - Pets:
- Warlock and Hunter pets will now be automatically dismissed when
you summon a mount. These pets will return on dismount. This does
not affect pet happiness for Hunters.
- Items:
- Heroic difficulty instances end bosses will now always drop an epic
item, in addition all bosses in Heroic difficulty instances will have
a chance to drop an epic gem! - "Primal Nethers" may now be purchased from G'eras for "Badges of
Justice". - Reputation
- New title of "Justicar" is now available for Alliance players exalted
with AV, AB and WSG factions. - New title of "Conqueror" is now available for Horde players exalted
with AV, AB and WSG factions. - Dungeons and Raids
- Creatures will no longer "Cleave" targets that aren't in front of
them. - Creatures will no longer perform "Sweeping Strikes".
- User Interface
- Players will now be able to access the "Looking For Group Channel"
by joining the "Looking For Group/Looking for More" tool - Players who feign death no longer appear dead to party and raid
members and friendly spells will not be interrupted. - Your current target will now display all of the duration based spells
that you have cast on them with cooldown rings so you will know how
much longer they will last. Very useful for warlock damage over time
spells and druid healing over time spells as well as many others. - Profession UI now has a search field. Text that is entered into the
search field searches against item names, reagent names and item
levels (if you include a level). For instance you can type "Peace"
into the search field to see all of your recipes that use Peacebloom,
or type in "20-30" to see all of you level 20-30 recipes. This search
field only appears once you have more than 75 skill in your
profession.
- Profession UI now has a checkbox that allows you to search by only
items that you have the materials to make. - Gems are now searchable in the Auction House under the heading of
"Gem" with the gems then broken up by color so you can search for
all gems of a specific color. - You can now link recipes into chat. If you have chat input open and
you shift-click on one of your recipes in your profession UI then it
will put a link to that recipe with the reagents it requires to make
into chat.

The most significant healing change? "Players who feign death no longer appear dead to party and raid members and friendly spells will not be interrupted."
Kuremia Apr 13th 2007 2:37AM
Eliah, did you forget about Priests? Shadow Priests got hit pretty hard with the nerf bat.
daniel Apr 13th 2007 2:55AM
what, no priest nerfs?
actually the most significant change for me as a healer might be the feign death UI fix, gets me every time and makes me lose focus for a second.
Argent Apr 13th 2007 3:03AM
blizzard managed to nerf holy paladins twice, pretty much destroyed the viability of paladin tanking (with the changes to how mana is gained) and tossed a nice little ret nerf on top of it all.
welp, i'm back to believing that blizz just doesn't want anyone to play paladins.
Jack Spicer Apr 13th 2007 3:08AM
Shadow Priests definitely got nerfed
1) Shadow Weaving - total amount of plus damaged reduced by 5% (was 15% now 10% extra shadow damage)
2) Shadow Word: Death - Cooldown increased to 12 seconds (up from 6 seconds)
3) (Indirectly) Paladin Spiritual Attunement no longer awards mana if the paladin is healed while at full health. (So basically, Vampiric Embrace will no longer give a paladin mana if they're already full on heath).
There were some priest buffs
Pain Suppression - now reduces damage taken by 65% and increases resistance to Dispel mechanics by 65% for the duration (damage reduction is increased by 5% and dispel resistance 65%)
Binding Heal - mana cost reduced 32%
Circle of Healing - Effect increased (unspecified in patch notes)
What people need to realize though, is that the priest abilities that were buffed, were buffed because no one was using them. CoH still is a terrible terrible talent, even though Blizzard keeps buffing it. And Binding Heal is still a gimick ability as well as pain suppression.

You missed probably one of the most important notes, especially regarding raiding: the reduction in the frequency of Glancing Blows.
This will have a HUGE impact on melee DPS, particularly for rogues. Not only does it boost our white damage significantly, but it raises the theoretical "crit cap" beyond 45%, should any TBC rogues actually make it that far.
Bobby Hansen Apr 13th 2007 3:41AM
Fah. I gotta roll a new Hunter. These guys are just getting even better. Heal Pet is now a HoT, a new pet talent, and a few minor things I never liked have been fixed.
Gill Apr 13th 2007 3:44AM
Hooray for the Hunter changes... not so much for the Warrior Flurry nerf =(
Keith Apr 13th 2007 8:38AM
Nice little rogue buff. I like the replacement for Imp Sap too. Increased blind/sap range and reduced energy cost? Yes plz!
Valkrion Apr 13th 2007 4:12AM
Well, time for me to quit my paladin, and re-roll :D yay!
Goldenbullet Apr 13th 2007 8:46PM
Hunter:
Im kinda interested in the new hunter's mark.
Increase in damage every time being hit by a ranged attack, i see this going the right way towards raids ^_^
Mend pet becoming a HoT??? Nice, saves up a lot of time on the handler to stand still while healing. Still, need to wait till the HoT is over and your pet fully healed so that your pet might be of any use. Way to go Blizzard.
And ofcourse a big Hurray for Blizzard for finally fixing the pet thing while mounting. Took them long enough. Cause if you forgot to dismiss your pet before flying nothing in Outland, they died :-(

This is the most comprehensive patch I have ever seen.
The illumination nerf is massive. I know that End Game Paladins were stacking huge amounts of int and spl crit and were basically running away with healing done but this realy effects the non Hardcore Healadin in an exceptionally sever way. I actually think this is the Biggest Paladin Nerf i've ever seen.
Could be bad news for Warlocks too with all damage breaking certain CC effects. The fact that it doesn't mention it specifically in the Warlock / Priest section leads me to believe that this isn't overly significant, but prepare for some serious crying if it is.
Another Shadow Priest nerf and Peripheral Healing Priest buff, but nothing of direct effect.
Official Forums are going to be interesting this weekend, expect record amounts of crying on Paladin / Warlock + Priest forums. Warrior forums are a sorry sight at the moment anyway, and Hunter forums should be full of jouvenile delight!
Bad bad news for Paladins though, just when they were finally starting to really shine at something.
Do Blizzard realise how hard it is to get good healers these days? Paladins were really making a big difference to Raids with their huge healing viability. They still of course will be excellent healers, but it's going to be all +Mp5 +Healing now and basically turning into simplified priests.
Bobby Hansen Apr 13th 2007 5:08AM
Some Shammy changes not listed in the Abridged version: Mana and Healing Spring Totems have been lengthened to 2 minutes, Healing Focus will only work with shaman spells (no more additions to Gift of the Naruu, the same goes for Eye of the Storm), and this. I'm not Enhancement so I don't know how to shorten it, but you tell me:
"Windfury Weapon": Mixing two different ranks of "Windfury Weapon" while dual-wielding will no longer increase the number of "Windfury Weapon" procs.
Monbee Apr 13th 2007 5:21AM
Where did these come from? If you read the full notes linked here, there are spelling errors and contractions like 'thru'...
Simon Apr 13th 2007 6:22AM
Cool. Finaly a patch I'm actually looking forward to.
Luis D. Apr 13th 2007 6:51AM
Wow, the classes that I mainly play got nerfed. Check that, I used to play them. I don't feel so bad about quitting anymore. Man, I can't wait until Warhammer.
Rich Apr 13th 2007 7:58AM
I'll speak up for the Rogues here: I didn't realize those things needed fixing, but I'll take it!
the six winger Apr 13th 2007 8:21AM
Bliz Dev #1: Guys did you see what just came out. Evidently priest don't heal for death and taxes.
Bliz Dev #2: But they are supposed to heal. They are priests it's their job. Do you think we might have nerfed priests to much. Might this be a sign.
Bliz Dev #1: No we just buffed Paladins to much. Actually I never liked priests I know how we can nail two birds with one stone.

"Your current target will now display all of the duration based spells that you have cast on them with cooldown rings so you will know how much longer they will last. Very useful for warlock damage over time spells and druid healing over time spells as well as many others."
Thank the lord
Falgorn Apr 13th 2007 9:10AM
Chad,
I don't know a single warlock that didn't have spell timers already displayed through timer addons. Necrosis has had this function for well over a year, tbh Blizzard could learn a lot from the modding community but it still seems slow to implement game features already available as addons.
