Unwanted BoE Epics on the black market
Here is, as she says, an interesting "moral quandary" from jumpingjessflash. She was making her way through Maraudon (one of my favorite instances) with a few guildies, and the BoE epic Icemail Jerkin dropped. At first, she thought it was an upgrade for her Hunter, So she's left with a choice: wear it anyway, or auction it and risk suffering the wrath of her guildies.
I've been in (almost*) the same position, but (especially with guildies), if I'm not sure whether I'll use something or not, I'll usually let everyone else in the group know that it's iffy for me-- usually they'll let me take it anyway, to keep as a sidegrade or a piece of a different set. If I want to be really nice, I'll sometimes let them reroll on it if I decide I don't want it, and then send it away to the winner. Another option is to sell it, and then split the gold.
Of course, you could also go the other way and send it to an unguilded alt to sell it anonymously. That way, you get the cash and no one is the wiser. Like I said, usually I don't care, but I'll admit that sometimes I'm a stickler-- if someone happens to roll Need on a BoE that I think is a questionable call, I have in the past asked them to put it on so I can see them wearing it via /inspect (I haven't ever done that to guildies, but in a PUG everything is fair game as far as I'm concerned).
Still, I don't have a problem with selling a piece picked up accidentally, if someone thought it was a good piece and then had second thoughts. If you did that and then put it on the AH, no one would accuse you of being a ninja-- would they?
*Update: As a few people have pointed out (including the livejournal poster), it seems like I did misunderstand her original post. She wasn't ninja-ing at all-- she asked for Need, but eventually won it rolling greed. Her concern was that someone may have passed because she asked for Need, not because she rolled Need and then decided she didn't need it. Because she rolled greed and won it, the piece was hers.
Anyway, I still think the issue of second guessing something that you roll Need on is an interesting one. That's not what the original post was talking about, but it's what I am talking about in this story, and I think it's worth a discussion.

Actually, she wrote:
"so at the last second I clicked greed, too...one person did hear me ask for need and passed"
She asked for need, but ended up greeding. Her quandary is that someone else passed, giving up a shot at a greed roll.

I would accuse her of being a moron who doesn't know how to play. Also, I would never roll need for something one of my ALT'S would use... so many things wrong with this picture.

... I'm guilty of this more often than i'd care to admit (the first time i felt horrible). Something looks good to me when it drops, and after further inspection, my gear is better than i remember. Luckily, my guild usually has a lot better stuff than me, so they don't mind if I just sell it anyway.

If I was in her group, and she auctioned after needing, I would be pretty mad if she horded the money (pardon the pun) to herself. If she sold it I would really expect her to split the money with everyone else.
Listen, honest mistakes happen, and if you're honest about them, people will understand. But if someone else needed it in that group, why shouldn't she give it to them besides her own greed? It's not BoP, so she should suck it and and admit her wrongs.
Either that or start leveling an alt that can use it immediately.
The one thing about the loot system in WoW that I don't like is after you roll, you can't pass. No system ever allows you to reroll, naturally, but why shouldn't you be able to pass if you mis-rolled. Until that last roll is in, I always felt you should be able to change to pass.
So, yes, if she puts it on AH, with no intentions of sharing the profit, second thoughts or no, she ninjaed and I would be very weary of letting her back in the party.

She should sell it and split the profit, I got this as a drop the other week in Feralas and made 90g on it, so its win all around really for the group.

If it was a guild group, why not just ask those with her on the run to roll again? Winner gets to sell it. It's not like she has to hunt down PuG members.

If you roll need, you had better equip it right then and there. If i'm leading the group, we will not move until you put it on.
Last guy hearthed out.

Hurray for stupid people who think purple = good.
Ryan Apr 17th 2007 4:08PM
I'd just transfer it to a horde toon and sell it over there.
Melf Apr 17th 2007 3:46PM
Everyone should be greeding it anyway if it's BOE, and then only those who NEED should roll NEED on it. So crisis averted if she decided at the last second that she didn't NEED it and actually rolled greed.

We used to require something like that back in the days of MC, but only for recipes. If you said you could use that Core Armor Kit, you better be able to learn it on the spot. Otherwise it goes to the person who can learn it on the spot.

If you read the link, she didn't need it, she greeded it. Big difference, IMHO.
Abazoe Apr 17th 2007 4:02PM
She greeded it. Please be careful when posting this sort of thing.

She did NOT roll need, as your article states.

1) why is a man using Ladies of Warcraft for story ideas? Indeed, why is anyone?
2) she was harrassed due to your original misunderstanding of her post
3) leave the names out of it so that the Ladies can continue to share what is supposed to be a private conversation among friends withour fear of harrassment
4) maybe get some original ideas somewhere else to avoid bothering one of the few wow communities that does not revolve around immature lrn2play crap?

Why has no-one stated the obvious? Guild. Bank. If you have a BoE you can't use after all, send it to the guild bank so one of your friends can! As the admin of our guild bank, let me tell ya, that kind of thing is worth more good-will than selling and splitting the proceeds or re-rolling. On a side note, anyone who draws from the guild bank had better NEVER get caught auctioning it.. that's an automatic /gkick. Never happened (yet), though.
It's GOOD to be the doomkin!

I had this happen in an AQ20 run my guild just had. Not an epic alas, but a BOE Totem of the Storm. I was the only shaman in the raid, I asked if I could Need, everyone said yes.
Well, then I looked at it. I realized that it wasn't what I wanted, really...I'm a resto shaman with some enhancement.
So I gave it to a guildie who just went from all resto to elemental/resto, and is about the same level as my shaman. I could have given it to my husband, who has an elemental/resto shaman, but he's still at 60 and has no intention of playing him again (why I sent him that nice BOE blue chest that was better for ele/resto I'll never know) except maybe to level his alchemy. I could have sold it. But I decided that it was really better off in the hands of the guildie in question.

I am the same, you roll need, you put it on. I never try to pug, but that is my view on it. I had one person roll need on something he couldnt use for 3 levels, and something I could use right away. Pissed me off so much. I got shafted into the LFG system to do SM way back when I was a 38, and this was a group of friends and I was the odd one out. I had to leave the group in the end, because they didnt care that the outsider didnt get the loot. sometimes the game isnt so nice...
Regarding what this girl did, no one else really needed it obviously and maybe they could have rerolled after if she didnt see it as fair, or like it has been stated, just sell it and split the gold. doesnt seem too serious.

I have a couple issues with this post.
I don't care if you post a public article to discuss an issue, such as this one, but there was absolutely no need to not only post a link to our WoW Ladies community, but also her username.
Its a LADIES community. Why are you trolling our community for your blog? You have a penis and aren't of the homosexual variety, are you? This is not only a huge disrespect to our community but also to the girl who now has her LJ username posted outside of Livejournal. If women want to find and join the community, they can do so, but we don't need random people from wowinsider coming over going "HURHUR lets go make fun of the girlies!" who would have otherwise not thought of such a thing to do.
GTFO.

Soooo... if it's BoE and she decided it wasn't an upgrade, then why not just find out who in the party could use it? Sure, if no one then needed it, sell/AH it. Personally, I'll either hold onto it for a bit to see if any guildies or their alts could use it at all.
