Beyond the sea
The late 30s are a great time in WoW. You're crusing around through some nice zones, hanging out, looking forward to getting your mount and all your new skills at 40 ... then suddenly you hit the brick wall of the Underwater Quests.
For some strange reason, most of the 30-40 zones (at least Hordeside) suddenly sprout a ton of quests that require you to become a deep-sea diver. Whether it's killing murlocs in STV, looking for sunken treasure in Desolace, or questing for those pirates on the south coast of Arathi Highlands that no one ever finds until like their third character, you'll be spending a lot of time underwater.
And underwater is rough. Unless you're a shaman, a warlock, or an undead character, you can only spend 60 seconds underwater until you begin to rapidly die. This means you have to come up for air after every couple of enemies. However, this isn't the most annoying part of undersea quests. Just like in the Mario underwater levels, the underwater enemies of WoW often defy physics in their rush to kill you. Nagas and murlocs often swim through walls and the sides of ships to get at you. The addition of a vertical dimension to aggro also means you can end up pulling a lot more than you intended. And sometimes you think you'll finally have gotten in attack range, just as the enemy freezes you and heads 10 yards away to keep casting frostbolts.
Underwater quests are so common and provide so much experience that I mostly just suck it up and do them. However, I know a good number of people who won't even dip their head below the surface without a shaman, a warlock, or a supply of underwater breathing potions to back them up. How do you deal with questing in the briny deeps?

Druids also have underwater breathing, but yes myself and a lot of online friends certainly agree that they are so much hassle. And the ones in Zangarmarsh are just as much a pain.

Flat beat me to it, but yeah, I simply switch to my aquatic form between mobs. In a pinch, or when facing adds, I can root one, switch to aquatic and swim away while catching my breath, switch back and lay down a heal, then return to the fight.
As a feral druid, I can usually take out the mob while in feline form before running out of air.
I found most of the aquatic quests to be nice. Not NEARLY as much of a chance of getting ganked by Horde, I'm the only one I ever see farming pearls, and being able to breath underwater AND heal between fights made them go pretty fast.

Hydrocane... grab it from Gnomeregan, hotkey it, and flip to it every 50 seconds or so to refresh your breath bar... you can swap weapons in combat, it's easy to swap back and forth with something like ClosetGnome, and it'll last forever. My 64 warrior still carries it, my 62 mage carries it, and my paladin wishes he could... :)

I HATE water levels in videogames, WoW included. I don't know what it is. The slow speed of being in water, the shoddy control schemes, the fact that murlocs live there.. i dunno.

Find a freindly alchemist who can supply underwater breathing pots. Or a lock who can give you unending breath. Or eat a Nagrand Cherry. I wish I could get more of those...

weird...i'm at 46 and haven't done a single underwater quest, except that oh-so-profitable one in desolace where you trade 5 shellfish for 55s.
on an unrelated note, i once saw 6 stacks of 20 shellfish on the neutral AH for 33s a piece....talk about turning a profit....

I have always hated them as an UD mage because it can be ridiculously hard to try to kite stuff underwater.
Ipos Apr 18th 2007 12:30PM
I didn't think the underwater quests that I did were that hard. But, as a mage I must say. That drinking and underwater quests don't mix. Which pretty much makes you go to not just the surface but further to mana up.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head with this one. I hate underwater quests the most of all quests. Length of time, controls, and of course breathing. I rolled alchemy on my alt JUST to stop having to buy pots for friggin waterbreathing on my main. Just seems to take forever but as you stated, xp seems to be pretty good so I do them albiet grudgingly...Did I mention I hate underwater quests? Just for the record, I do. :)

I play on a laptop so the control mechanic is even more wierd when underwater. As a general rule I don't mess with underwater quests. I have learned that the frustration factor far outweighs the fun factor.

Undead Lock FTW

I think if mages are at the very bottom of the water they should be allowed to eat/drink. It's really annoying to have to swim all the way out to shore to regen... especially when you've got your hydrocane.
Bootsanator Apr 18th 2007 1:16PM
pssh, Hydrocane FTW

Underwater levels in video games has come close to making me aquaphobic. I don't know why but I remember I ALWAYS hated the Mario underwater levels, and now with all the 3D environments where, when underwater, bad guys can come from any direction, it's worse. But I didn't mind the WoW ones too much, of course I've only done a few underwater quests.

/echo the Hydrocane comments - it's by far one of the most useful drops for a non druid/shammy/lock/undead.
Bradley Nash Apr 18th 2007 1:21PM
Oh yeah, and my main is a Warlock, so that helps...

I'm a Alchemist and been making Water Breathing Potions on my server. First i noticed these things would always sell but i had not the foggiest idea where people use them other than the shore area to get herbs maybe or clams. Then when i got to Swamps of Sorrow i got 2 quests, 1 to killsome snapjaw crocks and other for some monster crabs. At first i didn't use a potion. But because i hadn't swim in so long i forget how to. So i quickly made a 1 hour Water breathing potion and solved it. So now i swim underwater hunting crocks and monster crabs all the way to the edge of the continental shelf...far out there and deep under water. Its was there that i had a sudden SHARK ATTACK by "Coral" the Elite lvl 50 Shark. Took a bite out of me, and i quickly made shark bate out of him. Use underwater breathing potions, they work so good make your life & not dying a lot easier.

With my level 70 Hunter, I never completed the quest for the Eel filets in Zangarmarsh ; its a source of water breathing potion for free :) Just abandon it and there you go, 4 more hours underwater breathing free.
