Mr. Stormrage's Worst-Dressed List, 2007

Tier 6 is out and about on the forums, so it's time for everyone to do their best Joan Rivers imitations (especially the undead, who are halfway there already) and critique the sets. Boubouille has been nice enough to link us to all the Tier 6 skins in his massive 2.1.0 info collection, so I'll be using his skins as the basis for the criticism. Ready to get bitchy? Let's go!

Druid: So we've got the deer helm, the moose helm, and now the nonspecific glowy bird helm.Okay, dr00d sets are not known for being pretty. Earth tones mixed with bright colors rarely please the eye, although the Tier 5 shoulders were admittedly awesome. That being said, it looks like Blizzard ran out of money and thought "Hey, we already designed an epic flying form for druids. Why don't we just turn that into armor?" B

Hunter: Honestly, this looks a lot better than I previously thought. It's more red than brown and the glowing gronn eyes are a nice touch. I do find the helmet kind of unnerving though -- perhaps it's to watch out in case the hunter falls asleep during a raid? Although we don't seem to be facing any gronns in the Black Temple itself ... maybe it should have been Demon Hunter Stalker. C-

Mage: I swear that mages have actually had the same armor for all of their sets, except for the totally awesome Tier 5. Blue and purple? Check. Ridiculous looking head and shoulders? Check. Something that makes every male caster except for undead and gnomes look silly? Check. On the plus side, the headpiece appears to be the top of the central tower in Shattrath City, so maybe it's meant to remind you where you have to go to check the AH. D+

Paladin: BLADES OF LIGHT! But seriously, I kind of like this one. Admittedly, nothing is ever going to live up to how cool Judgement was, but this has some neat design ideas. I like the shoulders in concept, although I'm not sure what exactly they're supposed to be. A visual representation of the Light? The crown is pretty cool too, and I like how it's not all the same color like their Tier 5. As a side note, none of these character have boots for some reason, which I support. If trolls have to go barefoot, the rest of you damn well better get used to it. B

Priest: Ooh, pretty. The shoulderpads are possibly the neatest shoulders I've seen in-game so far. The dark, somber and slightly technological look of the robes really set it off from the other priest sets. It also works well for both holy and shadow priests, which is rare. The cowl could have been cooler-looking though. A-

Rogue: Eh, someone left the top off the Generic Rogue Set toybox again. Red, blue, black and spiky seem to be the only choices available for the backstabbing class. It also really reminds me of the Tier 1 warrior set in the headpiece and shoulder department. If those were made a little less bulky, it could be a very nice set. C+

Shaman: Who do the shamans bribe to get such cool sets? Their Tier 3 and Tier 5 were made from pure graphic win, and this is also a beautiful outfit. Like the priest set, it has a nice technological feel that goes along well with some of the themes of the Burning Crusade. The only thing keeping this from being absolutely great is the knowledge that nothing can top shammy Tier 5. A

Warlocks: While we're on the subject of bribing the devs, hi warlocks! Everything about this set is awesome, including the wings that sprout from the back briefly when the helmet is attached, but ... yeah, the helmet. I can see how it looked good in preliminary drawings, but like the rogue Tier 5 helm, it looks more as if it belongs on Saturday morning cartoons than in WoW. The dress and shoulderpads are very pretty, though. Perfect for a night out on the town or a night deathcoiling people in AB. B+

Warriors: That neckpiece is definitely an accident waiting to happen. There's some sort of rule that all the warrior sets (except Tier 3) have to be able to decapitate their wearer or his allies. Other than that ... meh. Brown and unremarkable, which I guess fits the warrior -- they're more designed for utility than flashiness. C
What do you think about Tier 6?

The Priest shoulders are indeed very pretty, and an excellent concept look.
Many of the sets are bland and somewhat uninspired.
In the end though, unless things dramatically change in terms of raiding all these will ever be is pictures.

The hunter set is damn ugly. I don't get the uber power feeling from it at all and the armor looks like leather not mail. Tier 5 looks a lot better than this one. Anyway, not to worry, I'll never have this.
On the other hand, the priest set is the best looking tier 6 for me. Those shoulderpads are awesome. Miss the wings from Tier 5 tho.
But overall, the tier 6 graphics are a huge disapointment. Tier 5 in general looks a lot better.

LOL I totally agree... I suspect they don't really spend that much time on these sets because most people will never get them! Blizz needs to get some outside talent involved to jar themselves out of the rut they are in. Borrring.

I'm very disappointed with the druid set, it's just terrible. Why must we always be stuck wearing brown? Couldn't you make green armor and still be in that "nature" mindset your going for? Good thing Ill probably never see this set anyway, won't have to worry about looking like a totem pole.
Shammies definitely came out on top with this set.
soso Apr 18th 2007 11:19AM
Sigh.
So uninspired. I like none of them.. not even the priest. And especially not the warlock (looks like something out of he-man). And the others are horrific. They all look bland to me, none stand out.
I miss the old warcraft.
End game, the tier sets, everything.

I think they must have been playing Halo when they came up with the Mage helm. Overall though, I agree with the afore posts, pretty darn bleak, aside from the lock set which they obviously put some thought into. The rest, particularly the Hunter set leave a lot to be desired.

vote to rename Tier 6 to
Tier Sad
Anyone?

I hate how stupid this mage set looks. The other two cloth-based classes look great (minus the silly warlock helm). I wish they had kept going with the style of the tier 5 mage set.
I feel bad for warriors & rogues though, it looks like they've got some serious neck strain ahead of them.
masterpat Apr 18th 2007 11:34AM
The Rogue set is absolutely horrible. Tier 1 and 2 were great for rogues. They had a nice 'darkness' to them and made rogues look threatening and stealthy at the same time. Tier 3, Bonescythe, had a good idea to it the but the colors and theme to the chestpiece just did it in.
Tier 4 - Plastic-y Crap, really what the hell is that helm? Are they tusks?
Tier 5 - Skeletor...nuff said
Tier 6 - Whats with the beatles on the shoulders. And that helm? Is that a turtleneck? Absolutely horrible. The devs must have said: "Okay black, red, spikes, and daggers. Rogues are done"
Zules Apr 18th 2007 11:41AM
I so don't like the priest set. Emperor Palpatine, anyone? It's a hugely shadow-oriented look in my book. What kind of holy priest wants chained and blindfolded faces on their clothes? Creepy is putting it mildly.
But hey, we're all used to wearing for utility, not looks, in this game.
Freehugz Apr 18th 2007 11:41AM
... at least most of the shoulders look good
Gitr Apr 18th 2007 11:55AM
I am so glad to be a priest with how awesome those pieces look! It's a truly even-footed look for all 3 specs for priesting.
Sylythn Apr 18th 2007 12:03PM
We got wings!!!! Albeit, brief and non-functional, but still... Next up, green fire! :)
Miraye Apr 18th 2007 12:05PM
The priest set may look kind of neat, but... it's shadow. Deep shadow. Holiness? Forget about it. The cowl is just plain ugly (but we all know that helmets are to be hidden...), and while the shoulders really do look nice, I don't like that it's that dark. Maybe they were listening to D&T, giving priests a shadowy look to motivate them to do DPS istead of healing...
Ryan Apr 18th 2007 12:11PM
I move that the hunter set be renamed 'pigpen'. The moniker should've gone to warlock tier3, but the 'sand people' meme seems to have stuck to that one like glue.
oomu Apr 18th 2007 12:23PM
I do think the priest set is nice
the rogue set nice and dangerous
the warlock totally wicked and fun (and wings!)
the mage, pretty classical, as all mage set
the paladin is nice and fantasy. light and stuff.
the others, nothing to say bad or good.
crispy Apr 18th 2007 12:33PM
As a warlock, I will uncheck "show helm" if I get out tier 6. That is just hideous...
Tau Apr 18th 2007 12:36PM
The paladin set looks very odd, with the shoulder blades of light, until one sees an in-game screenshot.
http://www.mmo-champion.com/images/news/210/paladin_final.jpg
I'm going to assume that the 'blade' effect is probably a result of the
characters in some kind of model viewer, because in an environment the 'blades' just look like very strong light sources. Actually, I rather like the look, once I saw an in-game screenshot. :P
Rare Apr 18th 2007 12:49PM
Priest sets have been win from t3 onwards, imo.
Am I the only one that actually likes the druid set? OK, earth tones aren't great in general, but for me this is the first set that has captured what druids should be about: nature based magic and restrained ferocity. T3 was really nice, but looked too casterish, whilst the other tiers made druids look like gardeners, this set captures that medicine-man/witch doctor feel; which especially benefits Taurens.
It is at least unique compared to the copypaste sets alot of the other classes are suffering atm.
Savok Apr 18th 2007 12:51PM
Hunters need that hole for the face covered up with more eyes. Sure it'd still look weird, but they get to be Beholders then.
Rogue T5 is NOT Skeletor, it's Taskmaster from Marvel Comics.
Blizzard hates Paladins, after making the best set ever (until now) in Judgement they've simply decided to slowly purge the class from the game it seems.
Priests, it's like they merged a Sith Lord and Jesus making the best set ever. I mean my god, they managed to make a male troll look good in a "helm".
Also remember the chicks who hold the scales of justice, how they're blind? Yeah, it's not just a shadow set, though it may as well since there's no point in speccing holy these days.
Druids look great, only problem is on the women, the.... hats look more some Fast Food gimmick employees are made to wear.
Mages, you poor bastards, Blizzard hates you as well, you'll be joining the Paladins once they pick a class to buff so they can replace you.
Warriors, looks like T4 with more spikes. T4 kicked ass, plus the top tier is no longer a direct copy from a Warhammer Chaos Army Book.
Shaman.... just not my taste.
Locks, completely over the top 80s cartoon villian, which suits locks perfectly.
