For me, a "main" is whatever you're known as. If you make a char named "generic" and join a guild, it's likely that guild will know you as "generic." Generic is your main, but then you get tired of him and make a shiny new character. When your guild stops calling you "generic" and refers to you as your new moniker, you have a new main =)
