Why does everyone want to DPS?

I often see a different phenomena in my guild. Attention goes to the tanks. They are showered with authority and respect, while DPS is a dime a dozen. If anything bad should happen to a healer, the question is which dps screwed up and got the beloved healer injured.

Don't think I have ever seen a wipe blamed on the tanking and only rarely on the healers themselves, although poor gear is sometimes mentioned.
