Forum post of the day: Worst ninja excuse
Ninjas -- we know them, we hate them, we laugh at how they'll never get a group on the server again. Most serious ninjas tend to go linkdead immediately after looting, to spare themselves being yelled at and reported. But some try to justify their behavior by whatever thin threads of logic they can dredge up. Thorsgaard of Moonglade-EU has started a forum thread of the best and worst excuses for unneeded need rolls, and there are some doozies:
- "I'm a rogue and rogues steal things. It's RP."
- "I died a lot, and selling this at the vendor will cover my repair costs."
- "It's shiny and fits well with my gear."
- "Because I don't have a red hat yet."
- "It'll be good camouflage in WSG."
- "Rogues can use axes in the next patch."
It almost makes me grateful for the silent ninjas. On my home server, the classic ninja line is "doesn't go to u" followed by leaving the group. What's the worst ninja excuse you've seen?

Methinks this article was a little unfair towards rogues :(
Other classes ninja too.

It's not my fault you aren't a hunter.

I've only ever ninja'd something once, and it wasn't actually a ninja, because I didn't know WTF I was doing (first Deadmines run). I need rolled on the Staff of Conjuration, or Conjuring, or something like that, the one that makes bread. As a mage. Then, later, everyone passed on a shield, after failing to set up loot rules at the start of the run (not an excuse, but still) and I picked it up to DE. I caught a lot of hell for that too.
Needless to say, I wanted to just go away and leave the instance. I stayed though, cause they needed a mage and they were fairly understanding. It was a long time before I ever wanted to run a dungeon again, though.

I distinctly recall my VERY first instance run, I believe it was VC (by distinctly- I mean I remember the ninja- alright? Dont' jump on me about not remembering the exact details).
My very first run, this rogue (yes, rogue) ninja loots the VC drops (or the chest, is there a chest at the end? Hell, I haven't played Alliance in so long, I can't recall) and hearths out.
It stuck with me because it was my very first run, ever. But it was funny to me (not knowing this was a semi-regular occurence amongst WOW players), until it happened again.
And again.
And again.
Good thing I don't like rogues.

"Why did you need?"
"For my alt"
"You know it's BoP right?"
"... Oh..."

I helped a trio on a quest where the mob dropped a BOP. I wasn't paying attention and thought I had clicked on greed, but had instead clicked on need. I didn't even realize it until after the group (which had just come together for a quick kill on this quest) had disbanded and I was horrified. I immediately whispered to the other three explaining and apologizing. None of them had noticed and all of them were cool about it.
Yippster why was this unfair to Rogues. Rogues were not singled out. The guy just quoted a couple of forum posts. Grow a thicker skin ;)

Well not having ninja'd my self, and I know this is going to sound lame, cause my "Cousin" did it. really my cousin...not em or my "friend".
Just introduced my cousin to wow, after starting a new toon with him and getting him to wailing caverns lvl. Got a group together and ran WC. about 1/2 way into the instance 2 people D/C'ed yelling. Turns out my cousin thought the need/greed was something like rock/paper/scissors and needed everything.
I guess he figured that if 2 people rolled need and 3 rolled greed, the highest greed roll would win and the needs were thrown out.
Set him straight and he knows better now.

I have a similar case. At what point do you become a ninja? I was on a Strat run and we just killed Baron. I know, I should know what I'm doing by that point. I'm a holy pally and a staff or something drops. I obviously cannot use it and it's BOP. Everyone passes including me. Then everyone is standing around and I wanted to get another look at the item while the enchanter is afk. I forget that I recently put "auto loot" on and bam, it's in my inventory. Everyone's pissed and I feel stupid but come on, I cann't even put it on the AH, use it or give to an alt.
Freehugz Apr 24th 2007 5:55PM
auto-loot doesn't give you the soulbound warning?
Todd Apr 24th 2007 6:09PM
I'd be more curious to see a poll on which classes do more ninja'ing.
Matt Apr 24th 2007 6:13PM
@11
I think it warns you now but it didn't then. It just showed up in my inventory as if it was a gray item. I'm glad for the warning now because it eliminates the idiot factor, which I was unfortunately that day :)

"I'm a rogue and rogues steal things. It's RP."
In non instances I've sat stealth on a chest that's got a lot of baddies around it. I wait for a group to come in and aggro them, open the chest & clean it out, vanish again and get the hell outa there.
It's one thing though to ninja strangers, another your own guild mates. Was in an instance a while back with a new guildie who just immediately took good stuff without even rolling. "I'm saving for a mount, I need it". We jumped all over him on that one and he turned around and just left the guild.
The real question I'd want to know meeting a ninja is if this is the kind of thing they do in real life or not. If yes then probably I'm gonna give them an earfull. If not, then the "Hey it's an RP server!" thing (for Rogues) works for me!
Quoi Apr 24th 2007 7:52PM
@15
That works for me too. You know what else works for me? /kick noobass rogue.

A blue ring drops from Archaedas in Uldaman, strength and stamina. My warrior partner is delighted, clicks need.
The priest clicks need.
From the next room I hear the loudest outburst of profanity I've ever heard. The priest's reasoning? "It has stamina on it, and I need stamina."
Aeralyn Apr 24th 2007 6:44PM
I once had a warrior outroll two mana classes on Whitemane's necklace, because "tanks need spirit".
Mayhem50 Apr 24th 2007 8:50PM
I wonder which side this happens on more the Horde or those Alliance players.
Never had it happen to me, it's best to stick to guild runs.
