Reader UI of the Week: Omegi
This week, Omegi, a member of <J E T T> on Kalecgos horde-side sends in his fairly minimal UI. It gets me to thinking, and I hope it'll get you to thinking too. Here's what's on my mind - what's more efficient: well-placed buttons with easy visual clues, or an array of keybindings that you commit to memory? Omegi has a set of keybindings which are great, and I'm digging the large buttons for infrequently used items/skills.
Here is the UI I have grown to love over the career of my mage.
Here is a list of mods and key bindings.
My mod list:
CT Raid Assist: Only for the group bars to show buffs. A raid leader must know his class officers are buffing up their members properly.
Bongos: This allowed me to move buttons around and make them smaller or larger. It also allows me to color the square for range notification and allows easy hover and click key bindings.
Cryolosys Revived: A mage must have. Otherwise you have 2 bars of useless buffs
Natures Enemy Cast bar: Shows enemy and friendly cast and cool down timers. I know when a soulstone is available or when someones polymorph timer is up.
Deadly Boss Mods: Better than CT Boss mods by a long shot.
Easy Combat log: It's color coded crap for idiots like me.
Titan Panel: duh?
Improved Camera2 : extends the range you can zoom out.
EZdismount: click a spell while mounted and you dismount for the fast attack.
Trinket Menu: better trinket management.
Xperl Unit Frames: Better group frames
Smart Debuff: Every debuff class must have it.
I will try and list a few of my most important key bindings.
1 = scorch
2 = fireball
3 = fireblast
4 = pyroblast
5 = frost bolt
6 = arcane missile
Q = blink
w = forward
E = frost nova
G = silence
T = polymorh
A = strafe left
S = Back up
D = strafe right
F = wand
Left mouse button = default
Right mouse button = default
Middle mouse button = arcane explosion
Mouse 4 = Vent talk
Mouse 5 = Will of the foresaken
Mwheel up = scroll in
Mwheel down = scroll out
Shift+mwheel up =arcane power
Shift+mwheel down = presence of mind
Shift+middle mouse button = blast wave
Shift+mouse 5 = spell steal
Shift+1 = cone of cold
Shift+2 = arcane blast
Shift+Q = frostbolt
Shift+W = flamestrike
Shift+E = ice lance
Shift +S = blizzard
Shift+Z = evocation
Shift+spacebar = trinket
Here is a link to my UI in action. Notice how bad I'm sucking in PvP. I like to tell myself it's because of my pure PvE build.

Yay! A video! So now you can see how the UI functions in the real world. So, I put it to you fair readers, which works better - keybindings or visual cues? I keybind my main actions, but still have the buttons showing, as I'm seemingly unable to commit more than 10 actions to memory for any single character. Does a setup like Omegi's work for you, or do you have other tricks up your sleeves?
Please, submit your UI to us to be featured here. In order to be featured, please include a screenshot (or 2 or 3), a write-up of what makes your UI so great, why we should feature it, and what elements make up your UI. If you have a video, like Omegi, link to that too! Take all that and send it to "readerui at gmail dot com".

Just like to point out that it's "Cryolysis Revived"...

I really like this UI. Its great for a mage. I have been planning on re-doing my UI on my mage, and it will probably be something close to this one.

This is really a terrible example of a UI.
There are elements all over the place that show little to no sign of tweaking.
It's like he just installed some mods, clicked a few buttons, and left everything laying.
This sort of screenshot just scares away newbies from even trying mods at all.
Wowinsider is better than this.
And by the way, to Omegi, try KTMfu and /dm hide /dm show. Please?

Chronnick, I think it's a pretty clean UI, and an example of what a lot of us run when playing WoW. It's a lot cleaner than the default UI, and has the buttons where Omegi wants em.
With the exception of DM over SWStats, it reminds me a lot of my UI, actually.
Are you willing to put up and send in your UI?
Chronnick May 1st 2007 11:26PM
I can and have.
I can explain more of it later, in fact I hope to have my UI in a Reader UI in the near future.

Can anyone provide a link to download Cryolosis? I can't find it on ui.worldofwar.net or wowinterface :-(
Bresh May 2nd 2007 12:43AM
Chronnick,
Now *THAT* is something that should be on here. I have to agree that this interface is just... bleh. Yours on the other hand, pure beauty. Care to list off the elements?

Why not fubar? I mean it is the replacement for Titan panel and so much better and lightweight.

Chronnick,
Your IU is not nealy as clean as Omegi from what I saw you had a huge block of hotbars. you may like it but TBH don't have a go at any one for a UI thats IMHO better than your.
out of intrest will we lose all our addons next patch? like we did last patch?
fel May 2nd 2007 5:29AM
sorry to post twice but there no edit =( I like the bars (your HP/Mana) the Hp of the mob your killing what mob is that - if you mixed your and Omegi UI you whuld get something very nice ;p

Personally your UI (and to a lesser degree the OP) is too much for me. If it works for you great, but I cant do with losing so much space onscreen for buttons/chat window etc.
Heres a link to my UI.

Bongos to move and rescale the action bars, the usuall CT_mod stuff for buffs and Raid. Cryolysis to free up more action bar space, KTM threat meter set to only show in groups, mappy for the mini-map.
I lost my patience with Pearl Unit Frames and went back to default as the enemy cast bar wasnt working right for me.
Other Addons I use as standard, Auctioneer, Emchantrix, Recipe Radar, Outfitter, Atlas, Atlas loot, Cartographer, and fishing buddy. All either tucked around the minimap or I memorize the slash commands to load them.
My goal was to cut down as much onscreen clutter as possible without going dual screen and literally throwing my UI over to the second screen.
Knottop May 2nd 2007 7:02AM
urrrghh, too used to adding url tags..

@ fel, that mod is mobinfo/mobhealth.
My bars are from agUnitFrames.
Just like Perl but they use less resources.
@Topknot, your UI is pretty hot too, aside from having a few elements closer to the center of the screen than I would like. As for your caster bar troubles, try ecb. It's a separate bar for casting (enemies and focus included) that works with all unit frame mods.
And as far as losing screen real estate with mine, well, I don't need to see the ground.
felunost May 2nd 2007 10:56AM
cheers - err not sure how to post my UI (just think Knottop but worse).
Paulish May 2nd 2007 11:08AM
Where can I find the Improved Camera2 mod?
Yoss May 2nd 2007 12:26PM
Omegi's UI looks hella messy. I would get tinytip, at least (so the tooltip doesn't overlay actionbars). SimpleMiniMap for minimap squareness. Prat for chat frame. I would hide the bag/menu/options bar completely and use bagnon for bag mod. I dunno, it seems a bit kludged to me (and I use most of the same addons)
