Tell us about 'yer lucky charms!
So we've all had time to get used to the "lucky charms" icons for parties and (more commonly) raid targets. At first, I'll admit that they were a real source of confusion to me, but before very long I was extremely used to them. Since then, my guild uses them almost every chance we get, right down to harassing each other with them. Of course, now that I'm used to seeing and using them when running raids, I can't help but wonder how we ever got along without them in the first place. Those little icons have just made things so much more simple from a targeting aspect. (Of course, you should be targeting off your main assist, or other assigned assist if you're not the tank or MA, but the raid icons do help all that along...) This post on the World of Warcraft LJ today asking about what kind of raiding symbols are commonly used made me stop and wonder if there is really a somewhat "standard" icon used by many guilds and raiding groups for first target. However, as there are only a handful of answers there, I thought I'd bounce this question off everyone here and try to get a broader sampling -- just for curiosity's sake. So, tell us -- what are the "kill this first" icons for your guild or raiding group? Does your guild/group have pet names (like "thong") for some of the raid target icons? How about whether or not your raiding group uses them for other than marking kill/CC/tank targets, such as the one player who says that skull is used for people in trouble? My guild favors Skull for main assist, X for off-tank or second kill target, depending. From there, it's blue square for the Main Tank's target, purple diamond is sap target, thong and moon are CC targets. How about you?

The orange circle is the Jaffa Cake and is used exclusively for placing on annoying players.
Mkichk May 5th 2007 9:25AM
For me its always Skull first, star is sheep, square is my trap, diamond or circle for any other cc like sap or a second trap.

Skull is kill first, X is kill second, Green Thong is sleep, moon is sheep, Diamond is Sap or Banish, and Box is Trap. The orange nipple is a 3rd kill target.

The orange circle is called the condom and is used for people that flirt with each other during raid, to be sure they'll do it save xD

circle is a condom for people that make dumb mistakes during any instance, the blue moon is known by many as CC (usually sheep if mage is in group) and red X is sap, but the first and only time i got the condom, was a s a joke but made me mad so i misdirected on the priest and used aimdeshot, arcane shot, multishot on a boss :) that'll teach em

mmm, on our server, pretty standard is
Skull-First Dps
Red X- Sap if no rogue then 2nd dps
Orange Circle = "2nd dps if no rogues
Blue square = sheep
Purple Diamond = other CC
These are all pretty standard across every guild/group. others are just used when theirs loads of mobs.

I suppose on your server, a lot of elementals and demons are found in the common instances to run? I also find it interesting that you use enslave as CC... I've not met a warlock that would loose his pet or his Demo Sacrifice effect for CC...
Digression.
Ours is odd compared to the rest - X is MT, O is CC (sheeping priority, otherwise whatever we've got), Square is CC (2), Skull is anything that might pose a danger/threat, moon is OT/DPS2, and diamond is the off-off tank or DPS3. (assuming they exist).

I think we're pretty standard, Skull=MT (really easy to tell when we had Skullshmasher as our MT), X=First to go down. The others we mix and match for the various CC, and yes the circle is the condom.
One cool thing I saw someone do once (although I haven't seen it since) is when we're getting ready to start a run or a new kind of pull, the leader will assign the people in the group their targets by putting your symbol over your character. It really cements it in my head that I seduce the green triangle, when I see the green triangle above my character. Once we get it, they transfered the symobls to our targets - really nice way to get everyone clued in for the first time.
Nyama May 5th 2007 11:11AM
Circles the nipple for us.
And if I don't get my square as a trap target, it takes me a minute to catch up, definitely. Its pretty standard it seems, but you never know.

@ChrisM - I absolutely LOVE enslaving the big demons in Blood Furnace and letting them wreck house. I don't even do it as part of CC, I just do it for the hell of it. The crew don't mind loosing Blood Pact for a few trash pulls.
Dongyrn May 5th 2007 11:29AM
Most likely a stupid question (but hey, we were all noobs at one time) - I've seen these crop up in parties, and I'm used to following the party head's lead on them... but how do you use them in the first place????
Sarcastic and/or condescending comments welcome. I figured I'd ask since searching has done no good at this point...
Olympus May 5th 2007 11:34AM
its not that complicated. You must be party leader, then your right-click on your targets portrait, and navigate to Raid Targets in the dropdown menu.
Dongyrn May 5th 2007 11:36AM
Aha, that explains it. I'm never the party leader. Must be a matter of trust. :-)
Cailleach May 5th 2007 11:54AM
Moon is for Moonkin.. sleep, root, cyclone, OT - if you want me on it, gimme my Moon! Otherwise, we go skull, X, sheep nipple and star, trap square, sap thong.
sklave May 5th 2007 12:53PM
Skull - Focus
Cross - Offtank
Square - Sheep
Purple - Seduce
Circle - Sap
Moon - Sleep (doh)
Triangle - Ban
Star - Varies
Things can change a little, but that's almost it.
