Breakfast topic: Urge to kill, rising....
Just like PVE to PVP transfers and gnome priests, the idea of a free-for-all PVP server keeps popping up on the forums long after Blizzard has said no. Apparently people really, really want to kill players of their own faction. That, at least, I can understand -- while the opposite faction can kill and camp you, players of your own faction are the only ones that can harass you, hit on you, report you, cause guild drama, and generally be annoying prats.
But a lot of players who say they want a FFA server note that they'd also like to wage war on their own NPCs. It seems there's some deep-seated grudges between questers and questgivers. Night elves seem to really hate Archdruid Staghelm in Darnassus, Hordelings want to take out Magatha Grimtotem, and more than a few players on both sides have serious issues with the Naaru. (Yes, technically you can attack the Naaru, but only if you really hate your reputation.) Especially me. If I could get 24 other people to ruin their reputation, I'd burn down those tinkling Christmas tree ornaments so fast ...
In addition to the Naaru, I'd also like to knock some sense into Zul'jin. Player character trolls have cleared out the Echo Isles innumerable times, and Zul'jin just sits there in Orgrimmar, playing backgammon with Thrall's advisors. He needs to get up and get building a new troll city down there, with forts in trees and neat stuff. Are we to be parasites of the orcs forever?
Would you roll on a free-for-all server? Are there any characters -- both players and NPCs -- that you'd kill if you could?

I 100% would transfer my PVP toon right now to an FFA server.
Countless times have same faction players stolen kills for quests, mined/herbed things after I've cleared the area and just generally been d-nozzles.
And ninjaing? A thing of the past. You ninja just once and word gets around? You'd be ganked by your entire faction for weeks. I can just see it now, that druid taking a rogue drop or hunter taking... everyone else's drop... killed by their own party and booted from the group, so they not only have to leave the run, but must walk back or spirit rez.
Beautiful.

The whole idea just seems ridiculous to me. Chaos would ensue across the whole server as every noob decided to attack their own npc's and other faction members. And then you would get the level 70 pricks that would go and kill all of the level 1 characters of their own faction. The only way to balance this would be to greatly increase the number of guards in the world, and that would be just stupid.
Nevertheless, it would be fun to give that arch-druid what for. He's obviously evil!

#1, and you've just said every reason why there isn't and will never be a FFA server.

Whenever I play coop mode on First person shooters with my mates over lan etc, it doesn't take long at all for bad aim or general mischievousness to render the level into a free for all spawn camping friendship disregarding orgy of self restraint gone awol.
As a 'social' game with group goals, there always has to be certain people that you can no kill.
If a PvP free for all server was made, they may as well get rid of all group quests and instances and restrict the end game to PvP rewards.

Although I think it would be a great idea, theyd have to put certain limits in place (e.g. you can only kill someone within +- 9 levles of your own).
But I personally would love this! Picture the scene in any BG:
Random Player: Ah alliance Suxorz , just let horde win.
Moir: \say: say hello to my little friends
(3 little treants spawn whacking random player sensless whilst moonfire, insect swarm and wrath come out of nowhere).
My personal pet dislike; whiners in BG's or people who just stand there soaking up honour :(

Certainly if they would ever make a FFA server there would still be restrictions to prevent totall chaos in the server. For example only same faction players cant kill players for 1hr after they killed on or something like that.Blizzard would have more, they aren't stupid.

A FFA PvP server would be, as someone already pointed out, such a total chaos that the game would be unplayable at all. But I still dream to see some feature implemented, like automatic PvP flag following a /spit, /rude or /chicken emote. After all, if you’re so brave to mock a Tauren in full-plate, it’s because you’re confident in your capabilities to take him, not because the PvE environment protects you... I’d like to see the same cross-faction and inter-faction.
You have no idea, also, of how I’d like to be able to smack some sense into those dumbass who like to ruin my rare (but nice nonetheless) roleplay events with other faction members, interrupting and starting fights.

I thought this desire was fulfilled with a hunter's Misdirection?

I'm still an advocate for PvE to PvP transfers. Although I've given up hope a long time ago and leveled up a new priest to 70.

Everyone would roll on an FFA server just for the novelty of it, but only a few people would remain. I'd definitely give it a try. I play on PvE because I don't like the thought of being permanently at war with those sweet sweet hordies, but being at war with everyone would sit OK with me. At least then I'd KNOW not to trust anyone.

I would pay all my gold & gear to watch billy and that b**CH with the doll get ganked repeatedly for an hour.... why the hell can't you ignore NPC's? it's amusing once.. and maybe the third time.. but FRACK it's been going on for far too long...
I don't need to kill them, I do need to be able to ignore them.

One quick correction for you (sorry to geek out on you like this):
The troll leader you're thinking of is Vol'jin (http://www.wowwiki.com/Vol'jin). He's the leader of the Darkspear tribe.
Zul'Jin(http://www.wowwiki.com/Zul'jin) is a forest troll, and his whereabouts in WoW are currently unknown (he'll probably show up when Zul'Aman opens).
I think it'd be fun to do an FFA server, although you probably wouldn't be able to advance in level easily. Plus, all your trainers might be dead!
I would target the npc's that are friendly to both factions, like Nesingwary & his crew. They're about the only NPCs you can't gank in STV. What makes him so damn special?

just a thought:
there is this "Little" game called " Lineage 2" in wich PvP is as open as it gets. Now they dont have all the fun things u can do in WoW, but the PvP system really works. I would try a FFA server and if blue does it right,i would even make it my main server.
Heymish May 10th 2007 10:36AM
I would kill all the Gnome hatin asses in SW. Burn it to the ground!!! VanCleef FTW!!!
SirCasey May 10th 2007 10:40AM
Two words:

They should just do a FFA server and let you copy, not transfer, up to 4 toons for it. I know I would have a blast playing there once and a great while, but not enough to transfer over some of my characters over permanently.
it can be sorta like a PTR realm.

I've played FFA servers on several different MMORPGs, including UO, DAoC, Neocraon, and Shadowbane. Sure, there can be pests, but usually ...
These servers are some of the most polite servers around. Every game. Every time.
There is so much less drama, it's incredible. The ability for the community to police itself makes for (after the brief opening chaos) a tremendously balanced environment.
Remember the trash talking warrior "know it all" that everyone has met? Lrn2play? Hrm. Those types of folks get ganked. Repeatedly. Until they leave the server or shut up. Loot whores? Ganked. Ninjas? Again, ganked. Hackers / botters? Ganktastic! Guilds built around "inviting anyone!", full of riffraff / grifters / ninjas? KOS for the whole server.
It is a different environment, and there are always folks who can/will try to ruin other people's enjoyment of the game. But from a player who has spent thousands of hours on FFA (sometimes called PVP+) servers, it's a welcome change from the standard "He's doing XXXXX, report him!" mentality.

i would roll on anf ffa server but only if there was an option like turning off the pvp that way u can lvl with out having 70 priks kill you and i would just absolutly LOVE to kill the beggers.
Mir May 10th 2007 1:31PM
Kill your own faction? Bah.
Zul'Jin: The long-lost Amani hero of Warcraft II fame.
Vol'Jin: The leader of the Darkspear trolls. This is the guy you're referring to.
Drain May 10th 2007 8:24PM
I'd kill only 2 npcs
1. The troll who spams in Shattrath about his stupid fake trinkets.
1. Oh yeah and that f*ing troll next to the tailors in Shattrath.
