Patch 2.1: Live clients downloading now!

For those of you who signed out at any point early this morning, you will probably notice that your background downloader is running and you're likely in the process of downloading the 247MB patch file to your computer. (Note: that's PC side, and North American servers -- Mac client may be of a different size) As most of us have learned by now, getting the jump on any large content patch is generally the best idea. Trying to actually download these great big patches on Tuesday can often be an exercise in futility. Well, that is unless you happen to know the location of a seperate mirror site that you can snag the file from. For those poor unlucky souls who are stuck with the official Blizzard torrent program... Yeah, I don't think I need to say much more beyond that.
Since last Tuesday was the rolling restart week for maintenance, this week is slated to be an extended downtime week. Are we getting 2.1 this week? Most of the people on the Test Realm forums seem to be of the mind that this next week would be releasing too soon. There are epic and PVP tweaks yet to be implemented, but those could be pushed in a smaller file on Tuesday if we're talking about a small handful of changes. I suppose we'll all have to wait and see.
In any case, for those of you who decided to pop in and see us before you head out for the day, be sure to fire up your WoW Background Downloader before you go! (Just log in and out, even if just for a moment. That should take care of it.) And hey, tell a friend to start theirs before they head out too. They'll thank you for it.

www.wowwiki.com for all of your patch needs...
There are always mirrors listed on there.

248MB on a Mac.
You can start background loader independent from WOW on a Mac by simply opening the WoW folder in your Applications folder, and opening the Background Downloader program. Please note, if you use connection throttling software like Little Snitch, you will need to give it the okay to download first.

YAY! Oceanic servers miss out! Thanks Blizzard. Theoretically we Oceanic's use the same patch as US servers... but I'm not willing to try that theory myself.

No downloads for Europe so far. Must be on its way.

Yeah, this is gonna take forever. But I guess it is easier for them to do it this way. Push out all the major content of the patch that's set in stone(like the new areas and instances), and simply apply little hotfixes later, taking a lot less time.

My ISP mirrors every WoW patch, unmetered for its subscribers. What could take days on the broken Blizzard Downloader takes 20 minutes for me.
Haven't gotten a major content patch off Blizz since about 1.4.

Actually... the background downloader took 15 minutes on my machine. Not sure where all the problems are coming from...

So will I be able to do the new quests in outland today?
Kirby1612 May 11th 2007 8:28AM
@8 No, the background downloader just downloads everything that's already been made definete, like the new areas and quests. The patch itself is not implemented until maybe this Tuesday.

Ooh! If the Blizzard downloader's up, that means there's a torrent file! And if there's a torrent file, that means I can plug it into Azureus and download it with a tool that's been specially optimised.
It's sad, really. This sort of thing is what BitTorrent is for - large files, with a small window of interest - and yet most people's first experiences with it are going to be terrible.

@#10....all blizzard is doing with their downloader torrent is using everyone's bandwith instead of their own. Thankfully using mirrors from wowwiki doesn't require that you use 100% of your upload speed (which typically forces a cap on you download speed as well)

Thanks @ # 2 have my Macbook downloading this right now while I'm workin'.
Mad Cow May 11th 2007 11:09AM
@2 ... works on windows as well. Have my babies?

Glad to be of service 13, 14 (we'll talk).

Hey, I'm up to 60% of the patch and the downloader hasn't complained about an imaginary firewall or a non-responsive tracker. Apparently they have fixed something.

Been running the background downloader all morning (since 10 AM EST) and I'm at 95% right now. Haven't had a problem. I love downloading a chunk of a patch early. Takes half the time when the real patch goes live. Thanks for the head's up.
