Spam prevention in Patch 2.1
![[Spam! Spam! Spam! Spam! -- Only Monty Python could make Spam cool.]](http://www.blogcdn.com/wow.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/spamalot2.jpg)
This tidbit came down the wire recently, and should prove to be interesting for many of us. Blizzard has released some of the specifics of the changes regarding Spam prevention being implemented in the upcoming 2.1 patch. The interesting thing to me is that once you report someone, it will automatically ignore any chat or mail from that account -- not just the one user name. And so long as the throttle doesn't stop messages in trade, I see that being an awesome feature. The major downside to the new spam prevention additions (at least thus far) would be that it only lasts for your current session, and it is based on using your /ignore list.
My question would be this: if you have a full /ignore list, will it still ignore people once you report them since it's only a temporary /ignore? (Blizz, if ya love me, you'll hook me up with that unlimited /ignore list I've asked Greatfather Winter for the last couple of years.) While I'll be the first to agree that these changes are definitely a step in the right direction, I question how many people will use the chat reporting option. At least, when you consider that there are mods now that block you from ever seeing the spam whispers in the first place. I do see that one-button mail-spam reporting getting a lot of use, since the mods only block whispers. Hopefully that will help knock some of the compromised accounts out of circulation faster.
So hey, if you're listening out there Drysc -- I will personally buy you a drink at BlizzCon if you can get the built-in spam prevention measures up to where we never have to see spam again - and we don't need a mod to do it. (I'd offer to buy the entire Dev team a round, but I don't make that kind of money.) Deal?
(Ooh, I just noticed, later in the thread he says these aren't the only changes. Let's hope!)
[Drysc's notes from the forums are behind the jump]
With the upcoming Black Temple patch, we will be introducing new features aimed directly at reducing the amount of repetitive and unwanted whispers, chat text, and mail. Our goal with these new features is to not only increase the ease of reporting spam, but also to automatically restrict it. Following the implementation of these features, we will continue to monitor for chat and mail abuse and take further action as needed.
Here are some of the new spam-prevention features going into the new patch.
Reporting abilities:
- Players will now be able to report chat and mail spam with the click of a button. A "Report Spam" option will now be available by right-clicking on a player's name in a chat channel, whisper, or mail. Using this option will quickly and easily report the player to our in-game support department for review.
- When you report a player, he or she will automatically be added to your ignore list for your current session. You won't see any chat or mail from that player until you log out and back in.
- These tools function on a per-account basis, meaning that reporting one character on an account will ignore all chat text and mail from that entire account until you log off.
- You will not be able to report players on your friends list or in your guild.
- Players will no longer be able to send large amounts of text at one time, filling a chat screen with a repeating message, large blocks of gibberish, or text that could disrupt an entire conversation. This throttling, along with the new chat-reporting feature should make it much easier to keep unwanted text off your screen before it becomes overwhelming.

It just boggles my mind that it's so hard for Blizzard to prevent the mass-spamming whispers from level 1 toons. Just putting a cap on the number of people who can be contacted by toons below level 10, for example, would put a reasonable obstacle in the path of the whisper-spammers without aggravating legitimate users.
I'd say set the cap at 8 people, and have no cap for whispers within your guild. Also, a low-level toon should be able to reply to anyone. The cap could reset every 24 hours -- Lord knows it took me an eternity to get to level 10 on my first toon.

Be good if they also add a function to ignore any whispers from level 1 characters. Or is this available already ?

Session-ignore is fine, it's obvious their intent is to expedite the process of banning spam accounts. The current method of opening a non-descript GM ticket means you have to wait for all the other non-spam issues ahead of you in the queue. I'm sure the GMs are going to be making spam reports a top priority here.
A nice tweak I'd personally like to see, make accounts automatically get a temp ban if a certain number of spam reports are made in a given time frame. That would encourage people to report the spam even more, instead of just installing an addon to block it.

Easy fix. Full account, not a problem. They spam, they get banned. If needed add the outgoing limit for the first 5-10 lvls. Trial accounts are the big issue. They create one, use it, and delete it. Trial accounts should never be allowed to whisper out unless whispered first. Disable the /say and /yell commands on Trial accts. They want to talk, let 'em buy the game.

Test accounts can NOT:
- Send large amounts of /tells (basically this "throttling" is already implmented for test accounts)
- Use the mail system
- Write in channels like /trade or something
If the current system stays and you just have to be lvl10 to be able to wisper - hellooo "Babybot"! Every starting area would be FULL of bots to level to 11 and then spam away (perhaps an hour or two to get to 11 I guess...)

"filling a chat screen with a repeating message"
Oh that makes me happy. No more 12 year old n00bs filling the chat channel with repeated "can u hlp?, can u hlp?, can u hlp?" or showing their immaturity by trying to do ASCII willies.

It's a nice stepping stone. This is the first concentrated effort by Blizz to hinder the efforts of Gold Spammers right? I started in December, so I'm not familiar with previous history. So have they tried before? Or is this the first?

As I understand this, we get a new option from clicking on a players name that allows us to report them as spamming. My question is can we use this option to report beggars as spammers as long as they are not on friends list or in our guild. Or just use it as a quick way to put someone on our ignore list? Seems it might be open for abuse and will we get in trouble with Blizz if we use it in this manner?

That last note might be kind of bad for normal players, it sounds like the damage meters report won't be possible.
