Authentication, or the lack thereof

About an hour and a half ago I made the mistake of logging out of the game. Now I can't seem to get back in and evidently many people on multiple servers are having the same problem. It's a shame, really, since I was planning another attempt at the heroics, but alas it was not meant to be.
My guess is that one of two things could happen. One is that we will be back up and running soon with little problem. The other option, and the far more likely one in my opinion, will be that these problems will keep occurring throughout the night. I am betting that something is happening with the Patch 2.1 install and it is messing authentication up. Nothing official on what is happening, but we do know that all is not well in Azeroth. Until then, I guess it's time to dust off your consoles, read a book, or catch up on all that homework you've been slacking on.

Patch 2.1 installation? Which patch 2.1?
There was another incremental patch rolled out on the test realms just a few hours ago, so it is more than unlikely that we will see patch 2.1 rolled out on the live realms this week, even next week and the week thereafter seems highly unrealistic for me judging by the still ongoing development and tweaking process on the PTRs. The background downloader is just being used to distribute the largest client-side content additions and changes in advance - the same procedure as with the last bigger content patches.

At least on Undermine, it wasn't just authentication - I couldn't access my mail, then we got the "Server shutdown in [15:00]", then things started to freeze up (I had a really cool screencap of a few people mounted next to the wind rider but not moving) and it all shut down.

I've had this a few times over the last few months, mostly since 2.0. Don't know what causes it, closing the program and going back in through the launcher sometimes fixes it, closing the program and logging in on a different machine, then closing and logging on on the original again has always worked for me, which suggests its client rather than server, and my suspicion is that just sitting and waiting would eventually do it....

Even not knowing about the PTR update, the 6 hour maintenance window tomorrow should be more than enough evidence that the patch isn't getting released.
Side note: Mike does well enough at posting misleading information here. We certainly don't need two people trolling it up.
