This space for rent
There are many places that lie empty within Azeroth, those interesting nooks and crannies that get our imaginations going. While exploring Stormwind I came across Cut-throat Alley, a little cul-de-sac hidden away in the Canal District. This is exactly the sort of place that makes me curious. I can see in my mind's eye a thoroughfare bustling with shady dealers and rogues, tucked away and out of site from the rest of the city, their dealings too dark to go on under the public eye. One of my favorite empty spaces is now filled: I used to camp all my characters out in what is now the Stormwind Auction House, since I enjoyed pretending it was my own private home within the city.
Or the courthouse in the Dwarven District. Here the great magistrates of Stormwind might have sat, dealing out justice to those who break the realm's laws. There are all sorts of stories that we can build out of these empty spaces. I once found an empty cave in Azshara without mob or mining node, the sort of place you might expect a hermit to hang out in, or a mountain troll, hungering for the flesh of wayward travelers.
Perhaps these are the places that originally had content but somehow it changed over the course of the development cycle. In the case of Cut-throat Alley, it looks to me like it was the original home for the rogues of Stormwind, but somehow seemed too difficult to find. Now, being that I play mostly
Are there any empty spaces in the game that you wonder about?

I always wondered about the big keep in the middle of the Stormwind canals. It's has drawn portculli (portcullises?), and guards posted. What's in there, anyway?

Not so much hidden areas as portals that seem to go no where. Azeroth has so much more potential. I can't wait until it's used in upcoming patches.

I found a Scarlet Crusade dungeon below the Stormwind Cathedral.

Most folks know about Old Ironforge by now but no one really knows why its there. I saw it once, it was fun to go look at.

There's actually a quest that was done in Cut-Throat Alley. Something along the lines of a shady deal going wrong I believe, not too sure as I did the quest years ago now.

@4- I was thinking the same thing. There is a dwarf standing in the corner that you talk to who then spawns these ninja guys that you have to fight.
I can't tell you how many times I ran past the narrow entrance to that alley without even knowing it was there.

The portal behind Medivh in BM. After the instance is over and you've won everyone I know on their first try has ran and jumped into it...
...only to land... on the other side of the portal. Then you have to walk around. LAME!

@4: That shaddy alley in Stormwind is related to the missing diplomat quest.
At one point you have to go there and beat the truth out of the gang leader, which is the mentioned dwarf.
@5: That place is like The Vault, kinda like Stockades on steroids. It houses prisioners too dangerous to be kept in a normal prision. I think it's mostly mages and the such. The dungeon is in the game files. It's like a huger version of the stockades with multiple levels.

The one unused area that sticks out in my mind is the arena in Org. What is it for???

The abandoned farm and large cave on the very southwestern corner of Kalimdor, beneath Silithus and AQ. Quite the swim.

"ooo portal!"
*mandatory jump as I go through portal*
"cool! where am I?.... ooh... lame..."

There's a little Dwarven farm on the far eastern coast of Arathi, seemingly inaccessible by land. I found it when I made an ill-advised attempt as a low-level toon to swim around the coast and north to Revantusk, since I wasn't yet able to survive the Hinterlands beasts.
I have no idea why it's there.
Also, this was on a post-2.0 but non-Burning-Crusade copy of the game, so maybe things are different with the expansion installed.
The Undercity seems to have been built with plenty of room to grow. There are many vacant stalls scattered around where vendors could set up shop but as yet haven't.

I've always wondered about the places that you fly over in a taxi but can't reach by foot, such as Ironforge airport and Dwarven farms right along the hills of Menethil Harbor, dancing Troll village between Felwood and Darkshore, Vent Co settlement between Ashenvale and Stonetalon Mnts.
I've managed to get to the first two, but the others are a problem =(. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see Azeroth grow and fill in those empty spots.

The one that always made me wonder was the little side alley in Strat Undead side outside the ziggurat where you fight the Baron. There's a Green portal there behind barred gates....indicating to me that the intention was always to make it an entrance to larger raid area, like MC or BWL's entrances. Odd how it's never really been discussed what it was intended to be.

The Cut-Throat Alley and the spot related the Missing Diplomat quest are two different places. The Missing Diplomat part takes place in the Old Quarter (near SI:7), while Cut-Throat Alley is in the Dwarven District (reached by entering a house bordering the canal and walking through it to the other side). To my knowledge, Cut-Throat Alley is empty, and always has been (sadly).
There's a ton of little shops and other places in Stormwind that seem to have no purpose, like the dungeon under the Cathedral that was mentioned. It'd be nice to give those places a little more backstory or make them interesting/relevant somehow.

Stormwind does seem to have the most mysteries. The other non instanced keep, the so called portal for guild housing, the non working portal room, and shady alley just to name a few.
The one I wonder about most though is the Baron Underground (area below strat). You can get there if you switch the level to heroic dungeon, and then jump off at the unfinished baron entrance. You will die but then you can run back to the live entrance and then you are alive in this weird baron basement which kind of reminds me of an outland strat with broken land and weird walls and such.

Far above the lake just south of the Throne of the Elements in Nagrand, there is one of those little floating islands that are all around the Outlands. This one, though, is different. The tree that grows there is a fruit tree, and the ground is covere with apples. And leaning against the trunk of the tree, there is a skeleton with an axe through its head. The significance of this grim but peaceful scene is quite beyond me.
