Hybrid Theory: Three parts awesome, one part me

I've never written an article about myself. I've never thought about what I should say if I was introducing. Despite being confident in my ideas (some call this arrogance), I'm actually quite humble about my accomplishments. I didn't want to start my column with an introduction. I wanted to show you exactly what it is you were going to get rather than just talk about what I intended you would get. Actions speak louder than words, though in this case, my words were my actions.
Frankly, my first article was a smashing success.
But now it's time for me to introduce myself to you. To give you an understanding of whom I am, where I come from, and my experiences as a player.
My first real character was a shaman by the name of Dragoon (later transfered to my current server) on the server PvP server Frostmane. Oh, I had a low level paladin on some other server before that, but I stopped in the mid-teens when Frostmane came out and rolled there. I had no clue what I was doing at the time (though some might argue I still don't). I got Dragoon to level 60 in awe of the premiere raiding guild at the time (a horde guild called Disband). I remember reading of their exploits in the Molten Core. I remember seeing videos of them fighting Onyxia. It was awesome. I was hooked.
After hitting 60, I joined a guild which merged with a few others, until I ended up in a little guild known as Zephyr. This guild eventually got into Molten Core, and I got my first taste of raiding.
I loved it. And I loved healing as a shaman. I was really hooked, now.
Around this time, another server had transfers opened to Frostmane, and that brought in an influx of brand new players. The server was swamped, and Zephyr suddenly found itself on a server with wait times, outages, and more lag than we'd ever experienced. We decided to move off Frostmane.
As luck would have it, a new server named Greymane had opened just then, and we jumped on board. I believe I rolled on Greymane the day after it had opened. Either way, it was early enough that our crew was still pretty strong. I remember those early days. Was a lot of fun, doing quests with fellow guild members at level 10 over vent. Of course, because we had all been horde before, we decided to try something different and went alliance. And because I was a shaman on Frostmane, rolling a paladin seemed like an interesting choice. After all, paladins and shamans were, at the time, faction specific classes and usually at odds with one another on the forums.
As a paladin on Greymane, I eventually joined the guild Crimson, and that is where I grew as a raider. Raiding became what I did. Sure, I PvP'ed some on the side, but raiding was my focus, and I loved it.
With The Burning Crusade, we have kept pace and pushed forward into end-game content with even more intensity. But with the expansion, I also tried my hand at tanking. I became a small celebrity on the paladin forums after posting about tanking Doom Lord Kazzak, back when paladin tanking was still new and exciting. This caused quite a bit of excitement on the paladin forums, and prompted other paladins to share their victory stories.
This leads to today. As I posted last week, there are problems with paladin tanks that have yet to be resolved. Considering my guild has pushed through content at a blistering rate, faster than Blizzard could fix content or fix paladin tanking, I've gone back to a Holy/Protection build.
So now you know my story. You know where I come from. And I hope this gives you some insight into where I am when I write my articles.
This leaves me with a simple request of you, my readers. I write this for you. Hybrids need a voice. While my voice won't always be about proposing change, I want the column to reflect the needs and desires of the hybrid community. So share your stories with me, share your concerns. Not ever article should be a call to action, not every story need be doom and gloom.
During the day, Jason Lotito browses the WoW forums. But by night, he takes the form of Endure, a level 70 paladin, and faces off against the toughest bosses Blizzard has to offer with his guild at his side. He's previously played a shaman to 60 and raided Horde for a while, and is currently leveling a druid just to see what all the fuss is about.

BUT, what is your favorite color?
jasonlotito May 16th 2007 3:27PM
I thought the choice of color for my flying mount would make that obvious. =)

i don't see why everyone wants to be the best at everything. druids are really good at healing, tanking, dps. now pallys want all of them too, along with a hybrid class that they can tank, heal, and dps all in one build. why not just give pallys an invicable spell... wait... they have that too
Matt May 16th 2007 3:35PM
I am also a holy/prot pally on Aggramar US currently at 69 3/4 (almost there...). Mind sharing your build? I'm just getting into raiding and usually heal but like tanking from time to time. Any insight into how you balance your trees would be helpful. I currently only went to 31 in holy because there are some great talents in prot, especially when going solo but I'm not sure if they will be necessary Raiding. Thanks.

Nice to see a writer on WoWInsider with actual endgame experience.
Myself, I recently respeced my druid to resto, after being feral since level 10. Despite pleas otherwise from my guild (I'm one of their main tanks) I wanted to try out a new playstyle and I enjoy healing. I think the best part of a hybrid is that when you want to play an entirely new class, it only costs gold.

i think that druids are most likely the ideal hybrids. they are good at doing the three things - healing, dps, tanking..BUT they can only do one thing at a time well due to the shapeshifting limitations.
(with the right gearing, of course)
i have a 70 shammy and feel that shamans are cut out of that third part of the triad - tanking. we can dps and heal with the right build and gear but we can still never be tanks. i'm not sure what the fix is but i think it would be nice.

I linked to my current build in the article. =) ( http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/#character-talents.xml?r=Greymane&n=Endure )
As for balancing my trees, in a raiding sense that doesn't work out. You are brought along to fill a role. That role is usually DPS, healing, or tanking. So generally you'll see raiders spec to fulfill one of those roles. In my case, my reasoning for dipping into Protection is to get Blessing of Kings as well as get the 3 points of Improved Righteous Fury for the 6% off of damage (and increased threat should I need to heal/tank something.)

Part of the reason for posting this as I did was to make it clear what experiences I had, and so readers would know where I was coming from.

Can I ask if that paladin tanking gear that's collecting dust down in the cellar, get better with age, or does it just turn to vinegar?
Dahlaine May 16th 2007 3:50PM
The concept of a hybrid has always been a problem in mmorpg's. Mostly due to poor communication on the part of the developer as to what their philosophy is in approaching how they are going to develope hybrids. Most feel that they are kind of the "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" type of class. The issue with that being that blizzard then created a game where success required specifically defined roles where each person needed to perform to a high level in order to succeed. If the game were easier, then hybrids would generally feel less of the pinch they experience today because it wouldn't require them to spec a certain way in order to guarentee a high margin of victory. But few would actually push for blizzard to make the game itself easier I would wager.
Everyone wants to bring something valuable to the table when it comes to grouping and blizzard has gone out of their way to create things like totems, blessings, battle rezing, to make hybrids part of the team. The problem being, hybrids don't want to just be gimmick classes, yet there aren't any more roles for them to fill. They shouldn't meet the defining class standards of tanking, dpsing or healing because it destroys the unique purpose of the "pure" class. Everyone would be the hybrid classes as they could just get new gear and a spec change to change their roll entirely instead of having to reroll an entirely new character.
Now, after writing all this, I do agree that paladin tanking needs a bump so there is some increased viability. But all the people complaining about the Retribution and Enhancement Tree need to wake up. You won't get up to the dps effectiveness of rogues, locks or mages. No one put a gun to your head and said "ROLL THIS CLASS AND ALWAYS BE THAT CLASS". If you don't like what you can do, you always can change. Just stop asking for everything, you are not broken because you can't do something someone else can.

It is good to see someone take up the cause of the hybrids! I look forward to seeing how you tackle the challenge. Pallys, Druids and Shammys are seriously different animals, with dramatically different strengths and weaknesses. You are going to have your work cut out for you!

At 60 I was a very resto druid, only enough balance for nature's grasp. When I went to Outland, I swallowed hard and put some more points in balance. (I just gotta be a caster, my highest alt is a 'lock.) I always said I'd go back to tree form at 70.
Well I'm 70 there's still a heckuva lot things that need to be squished. I'm currently 28/0/33, I couldn't give up swiftmend but I did manage to get all three 21 point balance talents. I'm a happy camper.
I'm surprised to find that DPS in instances is harder for me (!) than healing is/was. Healing is whack-a-mole, the moles don't change places and you have to pace and prioritize your "whacks" appropriately - but it's pretty straight forward. DPSing you have to pay more attention and know who to zap and who to leave alone and when to dot and when to spam wrath.
I love that the guilds I run with are giving me time to learn this stuff - and one of my best friends is a holy paladin, he hardly ever needs me to throw out a backup heal. I'm having fun going pew pew. *grins*
I think I just babbled a bunch without a point... :P
Galipan May 16th 2007 4:01PM
Nice article, it seems like you've been around. How long were you 60 with you pally before TBC came out?
Xixikoozu May 16th 2007 4:46PM
Being able to fill different roles in raids depending on individual pulls and boss encounters is the Druids job. Switch some gear and change form and you can tank/dps/heal nearly as good as everyone else. Problem with Pally and Shammy hybrids is that they're much more gimp in raids and can't just "switch roles" like that. Perhaps if there was a way for them to swtich gear or forms to help better with CC and such instead of making them hearth out and respec to be able to do something different...
...but right now if you want a true instantly-versitile hybrid roll a Druid. =P
25000armor/18000HP to --->
12000mana/1400healing to --->
35%crit/3000AP...
...with just a quick change of gear? Yes please.
Addie May 16th 2007 4:04PM
Err... I wanna clarify - I didn't mean to say that healing is a piece of cake, it's hard in a different way... a way I've had more practice with?
Urthona May 16th 2007 4:12PM
My main is a 70 druid that leveled resto/feral, specced resto to raid at 60, specced DOOMkin to level from 60-70, and now, because my guild needs tanks, I'm full Feral. All those I've enjoyed, with Balance probably being the most fun (for me).
Now my experience and skill is goign to show here, but I'm going to suggest that there's actually FOUR things that hybrids can do. Tanking, healing, melee DPS and ranged DPS. A druid can, in theory, do all four -bearform, treeform, catform, and moonkin are available to those who spec for them.
Shaman can do three of the four. Restoration = healing, Elemental = ranged DPS, Enhancement = melee DPS. Paladins have the choice of three as well. Holy = healing, Protection = tanking, Retribution = melee DPS. I await the devs and designers of the future to develop a hybrid class that has the Combat, Protection, and Marksman trees.
I am currently leveling a Draenei paladin and I have a lot of questions and comments about playstyle, but I need to think about what to ask.
Ragbar May 16th 2007 4:23PM
I too am rolling a new druid after playing a mage and shadowpriest to 70.
Our druid is an amazing pvper and I hope that he can teach me a thing or two. I realize druids are the best dmg dealers, tanks, or healers, but man, being able to do all 3 is pretty attractive to me.
KitKatDruid May 16th 2007 4:48PM
I love the fact that there's an article for hybrids. So many times I see comments like "Druids can do all three stop complaining." I agree that we -can- do all three, but never at once, and hardly ever efficiently.
For example, I'm a feral druid. If you ask me to tank or melee dps? I'm all over it! You ask me to heal or cast, I'm out of mana in a minute and you better be able to wait 3.5 seconds for my healing touch to be cast. My boyfriend is a moonkin. He can heal decent, but his bear lacks my strength and there's no substitute for a nice maul in combat. And a resto druid isn't going to be snapping off those starfire's with stun chances very often either. For every role we have to gear differently. I carry around about an extra half set of gear for whether I'm cat dpsing or bear tanking, and I have a whole 'nother set of gear in my bank for if I'm called on for some casting emergency.
But, anyway, props for the hybrid article, and much love for the shamans and pallies and druids, and for those classes just coming into their own as hybrids.
Addie May 16th 2007 4:52PM
Maybe you could talk about how to gear up and learn a new role at high levels? I feel like a total noob trying to kill anything in kitty form and I am SOOOO not a tank. Bear form is for extra armor when something is beating on me too fast for me to heal between hits... kitty is for sneeeking. *grins*
Vaharneim May 16th 2007 4:59PM
I'd like to say that Endure is also fairly proficient at PvP in addition to his stature in one of the most progressed raiding guilds around. I'm sure he'll get to that at some point... =]
Thijz May 16th 2007 5:02PM
My shaman is enhancement specced and I love it, untill I get into a group. All of a sudden I'm supposed to be the healer (only lvl 43 guys, I wanna be able to do some soloing!) and when I tell em I'm specced and geared like a fury warrior this is what they say: 'You're a hybrid, you can heal, stop complaining.' Might as well show 'em what it's like to have a melee-specced player heal, so I decide to join in. All in all it went pretty good in Uldaman, untill we got to the second part, I was OOM in about 5 heals, not nearly enough to keep my group healed up at the fore-last boss!
Luckily, the warlock had to go, and we got ourselfs a priest. This allowed me to show them what a enhancement shammy with 17.5% dps (unbuffed) could really do. I pulled off some nice windfury crits and it took us about half the time to take a mob down then it did with the warlock, ánd we all stayed about 60% hp! Needless to say, the boss went down without much trouble.
