Breakfast Topic: Blizzard announcements and you

Some human beings around the world read about all the previews they can get their eyes on, search all over the Internet for new information, crave for the slightest tidbit of fact or even rumor, and discuss at length with their friends about their speculations on what the announcement means for them, how it will turn out, and even what future announcements might be. Others, of course, live out their natural lives thinking Blizzard is just a very bad snow storm.
Most recently, the hubbub and hoopla has been about the new Blizzard game. How much is this announcement affecting you? Are you just thirsting to find out the details? What lengths would you have gone to in order to find out, say, a week ago instead of today?

It hasnt affected me at all, in fact, I think the take up and over reaction to it by virtually every games website out there (inc. this one) is pure overkill.
And for what? Oh god, another RTS. There still hasnt been anything better than Red Alert, Starcraft or Total Annihilation. Sure somethings change and people get all excited about things like Company of Heroes but christ... it's only a game!

Saying "It's only a game." to gamers is like saying "It's only a game." to a professional football team in the finals of the world cup.
For some people, it's their life, or at least a significant part of it.

I'm not excited at all, namely because I haven't played Starcraft one, and secondly because due to WoW and things like Xbox Live, interactive play is a lot more fun to me than sitting there against a computer for hours on end.
I can see why people are excited though.

Battle.net was the XBoxLive of its day. A unified online multiplayer platform for all of Blizzard's game(IE a lot of good games), including leaderboards and ranked ladder tournaments and chat rooms. All this back in 1998.

And you didn't have to pay for it.

In this case, like many others, they hype exceeded the announcement. SC2 will be cool and fun to play and I'll buy it, but...meh

No. 2... you are utterly bizzare.
A professional football team in the final will earn ungodly amounts of money, fame and recognition, they will be recognised the world over and celebrated thus.
Players playing Starcraft 2 will have a few hours fun in return for some cash. A tiny minority of Koreans will earn money playing it as a job.
To say that Starcraft, or any videogame is someone's "life" compared to a professional footballer is simply silly. I can only assume you have terribly limited mental powers. And I don't even like football.
Your comparison, whilst amusing, is so utterly, fantastically out of context and idiotic that words can barely describe! But then, a Baboon is as a Baboon does, eh?

to No 7.
U know there are great prizes for playing computer games too, right? Real cash.

I am looking forward to it. I still play SC1 against my friends to this day. I have more fun playing SC1 (and any other RTS) against other people than I ever have in WoW. Those are fun, WoW is a chore.
Those of you complaining this is a WoW site and should stick to WoW, need to just deal. It was a big announcement for Blizzard. After this weekend, the SC2 will go away and you won't have to see much at all, so just deal with it. This information for you is just like a good friend's annoying bf/gf, just grit your teeth, it will be over soon.

A pro gamer still never reaches the amount of fame as a pro football player, nuff said, and moving on.
I'm not too excited about SC2 to be honest, played the first one, was just another RTS. I would have rather seen a new diablo or warcraft game, but oh well. I'll probably play the demo and then never really give it a second though

I have to say, I was hoping for something like World of Starcraft, a Starcraft-based MMO. I know that would be a bad idea for Blizzard to compete with themselves though. :)
In any case, Starcraft 2 looks like it will be a lot of fun. I'm not very very into RTSes but I might give this one a try and see if it can capture my imagination.

it's not a bad idea for blizzard to compete with themselves.
even if they steal half of wow's audience away with say a world of starcraft game there still making the same amount of money beofre, however now there making even more because starcraft being scifi draws in a whole new audience.
and finally it's always better too compete with yourself and lose customers from one of your services to one of your services then lose them to someone elses services.

I am very glad its not a SC MMORPG.
Why? Because, simply, SC was a revolutionary game, and a completely new way of doing looking at the RTS platform.
WoW, like it or not, is just another MMORPG. The things that make it popular are just a step above what other MMORPG's have.
Anywyas. Its good to hear.

it's really screwing up the focus of ONLY gaming blog that I ever read or particpate in..
I keep an eye on 3-4 blogs daily and slashdot.. only one of them is devoted in any way shape or form to gamning.. and they even had the temerity to identify they would be focusing on something other than their main identity/purpose for a few days.. that comment annoyed.. .

@ 2/7
You do realize that it is about the amount of meaning you can get out of the activity, right? Immersing oneself in a storyline, achieving goals, playing games against friends for fun and entertainment are just as important to the overall well-being of a person as having a lot of money.
I retreat to my fantasy worlds, be them in books, film or on my computer/console. I'm sure you have yours, too.
Well, I do really enjoy spending time with my Dog, but I suppose that it can't be considered meaningful because I'm not making money off of it.
The Crowing One May 19th 2007 4:38PM
@7
So, in order for something to be meaningful I need to be making money off of it? Jeeze.
When it comes down to it I'd rather describe my "life" as my hobbies, interests, friends and family, my job is in there somewhere, too. According to you the only thing I should be dedicating myself to something that will make me money.
Well, I suppose I should get rid of my dog, then. His year-end numbers are decidedly in the red.
Guernia May 19th 2007 4:44PM
@14, I was thinking the same thing. WoWInsider, please, not BlizzardInsider. There's enough SC2 buzz around on other sites to satisfy SC fan needs.
WTB more WoW coverage
Dismahl May 19th 2007 4:50PM

There is no bigger announcement Blizzard could have made. Maybe you aren't a fan of the game, maybe you never even played it. But a lot of people have, and this is a long time coming. Starcraft had a lot of fans, and still does to this day, and now they're finally getting a sequel.
Ahren May 19th 2007 4:53PM
can we please stop talking about starcraft it is sooo tedious!!!!!!!!!
KyleZ May 19th 2007 9:05PM
