Tying one on

The other night after a hard day feeding Nether rays and toting orphans around the world, I landed in Allerian Stronghold at the opportune moment. Someone was turning in their quest, and to celebrate the NPCs cracked open a keg of wine. Now, far be it from me to pass up free booze, so I down my 5 servings in one go. Maybe I was feeling nostalgic for ZG, maybe I just wanted to see which Horde city I would end up in, not sure. But what I found was the greatest little surprise I've found in the game in a while.
Pink elekks. Yessir, you heard me, if you get drunk enough in Allerian you see pink elekks. Okay, there's only one, but it's delightful nonetheless. Being that I'm not much of a drinker outside the game, I find this hilarious. It's details like these that remind me why I started playing the game, and why I continue to do so. The sense of humor is undeniable in the game design, and it's a huge part of why I've become such a WoW fangirl.
I am not sure if these colorful elekks will show up in other locals in Outland, I haven't tried it yet. I do know that you can use any old alcohol to get ripped in Allerian and enjoy a romp with a pink pachyderm. It all makes me want to break out my Disney clamshell collection again. Good times.

The matching quest in Stonebreaker does the same thing. We have 3 Elekks tho'. :P

Yeah, the Alliance has more than one too, but I guess Amanda had tied a few TOO many on. The others are kind of in out-of-the-way places too. :P
Alas, I've yet to find any other drunken surprises around Outland aside from these.

you will almost certainly not find any other colored elekks - this is a reference to "pink elephants" which are associated with drunkeness. from Wikipedia:
"'Seeing pink elephants' is a euphemism for drunken hallucination caused by delirium tremens."
so there you go. i agree that it's a clever reference.

There is not only one pink elekk in Allerian Stronghold; there are at least six. Ben Allen (#3) is probably right on, but what I read is that it's a reference to the movie Dumbo, where someone accidentally got drunk and started seeing pink elephant hallucinations (which, again, is probably taken off of what #3 said).

You'll also find, when you're that drunk, that mobs around you appear to be 1-2 levels lower than they really are. "Liquid courage" indeed.

the pink elephant might be a reference to the simpsons. in one episode when homer decides to go back to his hippie roots he helps his mother's old hippie friends distribute their vegetable drink, but he mistakenly adds in their weed. when barney drinks the vegetable juice he sees a monster destroying his house, he than drinks beer and a large pink elephant comes to his rescue and kills the monster. i forgot what the name of the elephant was. but i think blizzard might be using that simpsons episode as a reference more than anything else.
