How old are those playing your class?

Mianii of the Ursin realm is collecting data in a forum thread on the average ages of players. She has organized the information by class, and what she has found so far is pretty interesting. Each person that posts in the thread includes their class and age and she adds it into her calculations (eww math). Currently the average age of paladins polled is 22.88, while the average age of rogues polled is 16.24. Weirdly enough, mages average at 34.74, so yay for me being ahead of the curve for once.
Now before we start making conclusions based on these numbers, we have to realize she is polling forum posters, and that is a very small segment of the player population. I would love to be able to get access to this data from Blizzard, since I am sure they are storing demographics somewhere. If we had an accurate idea of the ages of the players then we could start forming generalizations about age, attitude, and class mechanics and behavior.
I fully realize that on average only 300 people voted per class, and being we are a player population 8 million strong it is quite far fetched for us to label the many based on the few. That being said, looking at those polled on the forum thread, we might be able to generalize about that segment of the population, without getting too outlandish of course.
For example, the average forum poster who plays a shaman is around 24 years old, a few years out of college, just entering the work force. In that stage of life a hybrid class might attract them, since they are still trying out different roles as they attempt to find their place in society. Whereas the average age of a forum poster who plays a rogue is 16. Our teenage years are when we prefer velocity and excitement, when we have the most energy and like to play characters that exemplify that illustrate that energy within us.
It would be easy to overanalyze data like this, but I am fascinated by the concept and so out of respect of the light-hearted nature of the post, I won't go overboard. I wonder, if we were to poll our readers, would the data be different? What would that then say about WoW Insider readership versus the forum poster population?

While I didn't read through all 26 pages of posts, I'm willing to bet my father (Inverness - 70 Paladin, Kodiac - 70 Warrior on Sargeras) is one of the oldest WoW players at age 72.

I'm 15, I play a mage.

I think you missread the stats. On average there's only about 18 entries per class. The 300 is the sum of their ages

*giggity*
I'm at the average age of paladins. :D I'm at the right age to be a paladin then?

If I had to guess, I bet Hunters and Rogues would be the youngest on average, followed by warriors and warlocks. Not that any of these are noob or kiddie classes, but they've probably got the most appeal to the average teenager (although mages would be popular among D&D dorks - sadly i dunno if kids these days even play with pens and dice anymore). Druids, Priest and Shaman all seem more passive and spiritual, which I doubt meshes well with the "blow stuff up" attititude I know I had as a kid.

Lock - 22, male

That's funny, Nathan, because I DM a little D&D campaign w/ friends, and as part of the campaign we created a Sorceress class (for 2nd Edition), which functions a LOT like a WoW Mage. She has mana points, basically, and can cast spells at will rather than having to choose at the start of each day (like a regular Wizard).

Actually, you might be surprised to find that Hunters are likely far older.
I chose a Hunter because my playing time is very limited (I'm an old man) and I knew I'd be soloing mostly.
That and Warlock are great for 20 and 30 minute soloing sessions throughout the day.

What about priests? I'm 26.

Hey, everyone, lets make sweeping assessments about people based on the classes they play. Damn it, Amanda, this is as bad as the time you said l337 was a cultural movement.
"I play a shaman because I'm unsure of what I want to do with my life, who I am, and where I want to go." Bull.

Not a big fan of the young-rogue stereo type. I'm in my mid 20s and I play a Blood Elf Rogue. Go figure. I dont play to pwn noobs, I barely even pvp, I play to concentrate on building the best spec i can for one single concrete purpose - dps. Yeah I get a bit maths geek about it all but what are you gunna do. Oh and re: the 72 year old wow player, I had a customer few months back, he was 81, going half blind, but he had a mid-40s hunter which he played every day as far as I could tell.

I'd really like to see Blizzard's data on this.
I'm 37, and play all classes. My mage is currently my primary character now that I've retired my priest.
Axeme May 30th 2007 9:01PM
At #8,
Exactly. I'm 30 and between the family and job, don't have an extreme amount of time to play. Therefore being a BM Huntard means I can level solo fairly efficiently.
feadin May 30th 2007 9:09PM
21. lock.but i play all classes. but my lock is may main. i have know the passivities of being a druid or the healing kind of a paladin.

my main is a mage and I am 39 years old, usually I play solo and blow stuff up :-)
Rich May 30th 2007 10:07PM
I am not surprised by the real lack of age spread there. Mages and rogues are the only ones that stick out. Everything is pretty close.
