Around Azeroth: But where does the water come from?
Around Azeroth has looked at plenty of waterfalls before. And why not? They tend to be scenic views wherever in the World of Warcraft they come from. However, the waterfall we're looking at today is a bit different from any we've looked at before -- because unlike the ordinary waterfalls of Azeroth, this one has no apparent source of water. After all, a stream can hardly flow to an island floating in mid-air, can it? So where's that water coming from? Reader Boterham of Drek'Thar (EU), who sent us this shot, wonders too. Anyone in the audience care to take a stab at guessing how the Outland ecosystem works?

From the part of my brain that needs an explanation for everything, I've always just assumed there was some kind of portal or something inside those islands, pushing water out from that big swirly thing in the middle of the Azeroth map.

I'd have to assume that this a strategically placed drainage pipe which through a series of complex tunnels, portals and demonic slave labor, allows Blizzard to keep the barrens free from flooding.
What flooding, you may ask? Ever wonder how many tears are shed by frustrated and insulted toons down there? Yeah, all that liquid needs somewhere to go...

Maybe the trees and grass have evolved in such a way that they can draw water out of the Twisting Nether's air?
Beelzebud Jun 15th 2007 10:33AM
It's string theory.
The water unfolds from a higher dimension.
Simple.

Zarevhi probably studied those islands to learn how to create something out of nothing.

^-^ The they can the same way a tree can survive on an floating island separated from any lasting food source. Surly, those trees would have died long ago.
.....my solution....magic. Best thing about fantasy games, books, etc. is that anything and everthing can be have a solution being merely magic *POOF* O.O

Well for that matter, How is the island floating anyway?

Arent we all on a floating island? Ya know the one called earth?
nav Jun 15th 2007 11:28AM
@11: yes. However, the waterfall itself demonstrates the local value of the acceleration due to gravity, and yet the lump of rock seems to be stubbornly ignorant of it.
Zebedeo Jun 15th 2007 11:40AM
The fact that the rock is already floating in mid air would seem to suggest magic is involved.

At the risk of sounding like an utter nerd...
Don't the blood elves have fountains that use magic portals instead of pipes to great effect? Go look around Silvermoon and the starting area. Magic portal fountains everywhere.
And this screenshot is in Nagrand, right? Doubtless the land's so chock full of arcane and elemental magic, it makes SENSE there for water to go where it damn well pleases.

@8
Trees don't eat food.
Trees and all plants get bigger by taking carbon dioxide from the air.
True, they get some nutrients from the soil. But they don't always NEED those nutrients to survive, and also, bacteria can fix nitrogen from the air, so, those plants would be fine.
Also...Magic! :)

@15
Actually, trees eat babies. So..heh..as you can plainly see...your theory is defeated.
Dixonij Jun 15th 2007 2:45PM
Oh oh its magic... you knooow...
Bootsanator Jun 15th 2007 4:38PM
oh. i forgot about the babies. my bad.
kirrathjehrain Jun 15th 2007 5:00PM
It's Nagrand. I've always just attributed it to all the elementals there.
sgashby Jun 16th 2007 12:01PM
It's just another bug thanks to the 2.1 patch. The floating rock should actually be a glacier. And it it shouldn't be floating at all.
