Shifting Perspectives: Awesome tanking gear and how to get it easily
Bears make some of the awesomest tanks around. There are advantages and disadvantages to having a druid tank as opposed to a warrior, or maybe even a paladin, and we can leave the discussion of which is best for another day. You are probably aware, though, that one of a druid's main advantages in tanking is the extremely high armor he or she can achieve in bear form. Shifting to bear form increases the armor of a druid by 400%, and there are a number of leather items out there which have a higher-than-average armor that can send our physical damage mitigation through the roof.
Let's just assume that you're leveling up your feral druid, thinking about when you reach 70 and wondering what kind of gear you're going to need going into the high-end 5-person instances and raiding. The thing you might not know is, as you're leveling up towards 70, some of the best of these high-armor items are easily available through quests. These may be "just green" in some cases, but that armor rating makes them extremely valuable for a druid for a long time. They often outshine their bluer or purpler counterparts in their bearish tanking power. Continue reading for a short guide to these what these items are how to get them.
Jerkin of the Untamed Spirit (Chest: 425 Armor) -- This beauty is available as early as 58 if you can manage the Hellfire quests that early or get a friend to help! You'll find it is invaluable for tanking during the leveling process, but as you come closer to level 70, you'll be hoping to find something better. Horde druids have to follow a bounty from a wanted poster at the entry to Spinebreaker Post, burn some buildings, "ensorcel" an eyeball, and finally defeat a nasty badguy, while Alliance druids just have to burn some towers for Wing Commander Dabir'ee near Zeth'Gor in Hellfire Peninsula.
As for an upgrade, you can consider doing a couple quests at minimum level 65 for Nickwinkle's Harness Experiment (343 Armor, but with lots more stamina - Alliance only), or buying a Chestguard of the Talon (378 Armor, but with better agility and strength) at level 68. At 70, you may want to see if you can ask (or beg!) a leatherworker to help you with a Heavy Clefthoof Vest (500 Armor!) -- although I must admit I haven't seen many leatherworkers around lately, so this might be pretty tough to get.
Cloak of the Valiant Defender (Back: 262 Armor) -- If you don't happen to find the Bogstrok Scale Cloak from Rokmar the Crackler in the Slave Pens while you level, you can also consider getting this cloak from a series of 8 quests in the Netherstorm at minimum level 67, starting with Ravandwyr in Area 52.
At level 70, you can look forward to finding a Thoriumweave Cloak (390 Armor) from Mechano-Lord Capacitus in the Mechanar. This is the single highest-armor cloak in the game, although you may find other cloaks with similarly high armor and additional resilience, such as the Resolute Cape and the Gilded Thorium Cloak.
Supple Leather Boots (Feet: 352 Armor) -- These boots will be the best you can get for tanking for a while. To pick them up, all you have to do is reach level 66, visit Timeon at Ruuan Weald in the northeastern Blade's Edge Mountains and do two quests for him. These quests will take a few minutes of your time fighting arakkoa, but they're not very hard.
And now that patch 2.1 is here, you will be able to upgrade these with some buffed up Heavy Clefthoof Boots (394 armor), now available through leatherworking.
Ash Tempered Legguards (Legs: 475 Armor) -- These are a bit more difficult to get, but still nothing you can't do on your own. To begin, head over to Shadowmoon Valley at at least 67th level, and seek out Gryphonrider Kieran at Wildhammer Stronghold for the Alliance, or Sergeant Kargrul at Shadowmoon Village for the Horde. Either of these will send you off looking for some journal pages that point to an arakkoa deserter, named Parshah. Once again, Parshah will have you busy killing other arakkoa and collecting things, but once you have thwarted the dark conclave of evil bird men, you should be able to get your spiffy tanking leggings.
Once again, with patch 2.1, you can upgrade at level 70 to the Heavy Clefthoof Leggings (503 Armor) if you know a friendly leatherworker or are willing to pay some significant gold at the auction.
Manimal's Cinch (Waist: 348 Armor) -- Once you reach level 68, it's time to start thinking about this quest chain called the "Cipher of Damnation." This quest is notoriously long, and it eventually gets rather difficult, but at this stage it's not too bad yet. Once again, there are quest-givers at each of the two outposts in Shadowmoon Valley (Earthmender Sophurus for Alliance and Earthmender Splinthoof for Horde), who will ask you to go find Earthmender Torlok and help him try to make amends with the tortured elementals of Shadowmoon Valley by... killing them and collecting their souls. Once you've done this somewhat incongruous task for the spirits of Earth, Fire, Water and Air, Manimal's Cinch will be yours, and you will be free to move on to the next stage of this quest, involving Oronok Torn-Heart.
After this, there are only two leather belts I could find with a higher armor rating, the Tree-Mender's Belt (406 Armor) from the last boss of Heroic Hellfire Ramparts, and the Belt of Natural Power (423 Armor) -- another top-end crafted item that might make feral druids everywhere consider dropping their current professions and taking up leatherworking.
Umberhowl's Collar (Wrist: 281 Armor) -- After doing more of this and that, the Cipher of Damnation quest splits into three parts. The one you'll want to focus on is the quest for the third fragment of this damnable Cipher. Borak, son of Oronok, will eventually ask you to beat up this dragon-riding elf named Ruul in southern Shadowmoon Valley, and you'll need to bring some friends along for that battle.
As far as I know, this is the highest-armor leather bracer in the game. The next one down from this are the Forestheart Bracers (237 Armor), which drop off of Warchief Kargath Bladefist in Heroic Shattered Halls.
Verdant Gloves (Hands: 393 Armor) -- The final item for today is this reward for a series of quests that introduce you to Akama, the would-be betrayer of the Betrayer in the Black Temple. The quest starts in Shadowmoon Valley, either with Anchorite Ceyla at the Altar of Sha'tar for those who chose the Aldor, or Arcanist Thelis at the Sanctum of Stars for the Scryers; both of these ask you to collect tablets in the Ruins of Baa'ri. This quest eventually ends up with Akama asking you to fight a difficult battle on a terrace outside the Black Temple itself, so be ready to bring some friends along for the culmination!
After these gloves, the next-highest armor rating for your hands comes from the tier 4 feral Gauntlets of Malorne (475 Armor)! So... these should hold you over for quite a while.
There are many other items with high armor ratings available, including notably some high-armor weapons, such as Braxxis' Staff of Slumber, the Greatstaff of the Leviathan, and the Earthwarden. Some trinkets like the Badge of Tenacity deserve special mention also, as well as the Smoking Heart of the Mountain and the Mark of Tyranny, for being two druid tanking trinkets from before the expansion that are still useful to this day. These, however, do not come from plain old Outland quests, so we may cover how to acquire them on another day.

Strength of Clefthoof is a great set that can be crafted, it got a nice boost in stats after 2.1 but it does take about 96 Thick Clefthoof leather and 12 Primal Earths along with a little bit of heavy knothide leather

Ok, Im glad that you spent all this time to go through and find all this out, but have leveled a feral druid that tanks Black Temple, and now the new 25-man, some of the stuff you listed is just crap. Having a lowish level green gear with for example, Chestguard of the Talon. What good is that going to do you? I admit it has a nice amount of armor, but dont sacrafice the armor for the crapy stats. From the moment I started running kara, to almost all the way through SSC and TK, i was using the Clefthoof boots, and Chest. I have Two feral Druids. 1 that is fully t6 geared, and one that is partially geared but respecing. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Cenarion%20Circle&n=Solarflair
Now i did log out in cat form. I have the Clefthoof vest and a different pair of gloves. But in bear form i have 30k armor. The cap is 32k. So jsut because a piece of green gear has a high armor rating, dont get it. The Dire bear form is immence. All in all, not to offend anyone, this guide is not very accurate. Its somewhat helpful, but it will not be a website that i would send somebody to look at first. More of a second or last resort.

how about listing the stamina on this gear?
J-bob Jun 19th 2007 5:37PM
Nice start, but be careful about over dependence on armor. Feral tanking is about balancing armor, stamina, and agility (dodge) while maintaining at least 415 Defense (and 3/3 survival of the fittest).
The gear you highlighted here will suffice for running normal 5-mans, but if you are starting Kara and trying heroics you're the starter set should consist of:
Head: Stylin' Purple Hat (with Keepers of Time inscription)
Neck: Necklace of the Untamed (revered Cenarion Exp) or Mark of the Ravenguard (Sethekk quest)
Shoulder: Shoulder of Assassination (Sethekk halls drop - no real good quest/rep reward for this slot - and yes, roll against rogues for it. It's one of the top tanking shoulders you can get)
Chest: Heavy Clefthoof (socketed with agi or stam gems) or Warden's Hauberk (honored Cenarion Exp)
Back: any cloak with armor
Wrist: Umberhowler's Collar really is the best you'll find for a long time
Hands: Verdant gloves are excellent (the questline requires an arcatraz run). Only possible upgrade pre-kara are wastewalker gloves from Shattered Halls.
Waist: Manimals Cinch (sigh...)
Feet: Heavy Clefthoof
Legs: Heavy Clefthoof
Rings: Any with armor/defense(drop from Ramparts and Old Hillsbrad are good starts), alternatively something with high agility/stam will work.
Trinkets: Mark of Tyranny plus your pick
Weapon: Braxxis Staff of Slumber with +35 Agi - buy it and use it till you are exalted with Cenarion Expedition
Idol: Idol of the Wild (bleh - quest green) or Idol of Brutality (double bleh - Stratholme drop!)
That should get you to 20k+ Armor, 11-12k health, 25-30% dodge and 415 defense.
When you're in Kara grab some high agi/stam peices (gloves of dexterous manipulation), Zierhut's Lost Treads, Moroes Pocketwatch plus your tier stuff. Run heroic Ramparts, Shattered Halls, Underbog and Slave Pens for the epic armor buffed items.

Great post, I'm leveling a druid currently, and this was a great help.
Gurei Jun 19th 2007 6:30PM
Simply pathetic itemization from blizzard, the standard druid will have close to the best of the best by 70,then he can just AH the rest and nothing else will be signifiacant upgrade for many classes.
These made druids be seen as OP while it was just item problems, and now makes em underpowered when facing situations that require better gear thats not aviable.
Urthona Jun 19th 2007 7:28PM
Haha! I made a list like this maybe 4 weeks ago on my guild's server. I was guessing with what gear I had managed to find, and I'm nearly item for item with the suggested slots.
While I agree that better beartank gear is lacking in endgame... specifically: Where is my Dreamwalker tanking Heroic lookalike? :-) (Cenarion lookalike - resto, Stormrage - moonkin) ... I like that I'm maxed out at 70. I've got 15K stam and 25K armor along with my Imp LotP —makes my healer team love me.
What I want to see are more Idols.
I use the green Mangle one for beartank, and the Mana Tombs' Idol of the Claw for catform. I know that Ferocity and Brutality exist, but lack the WOW niceness of "heals you on finishing move" of Idol of the Claw. There's resto idols: Emerald Queen for Lifebloom, and Nessignwary's Rejuv one, and Balance ones: Moon for moonfare spam, Shattered Halls for Starfire and the quested one for Wrath from SMV.
Sure, that sounds like a lot, but kinda useless to a guy that spends his time as a bear. I'd like something one that lets me lacerate undead and elementals, or heals me when I resist spell damage, or doubles the duration of my Bash.
And when I respec to moonkin, howzabout something that makes Hurricane a truly viable AOE?
Paul Jun 19th 2007 7:39PM
How about before you can get all this gear?
Do you guys think agility or strength is more important while leveling up as a druid, assuming you will be using bear form instead of cat (yeah I know it's slower, I just want to run more instances to get tanking down earlier).
Obviously you'll want a decent amount of stamina, but i'm wondering if the utility of using agility, so that i can switch back and forth between cat and bear without having to change armor, is worth the lesser attack power in bear form.
oSMILE12 Sep 14th 2008 12:46PM
I've levelled and geared two 70 feral druids so far. My first druid was while I was still a nub who preferred tanking instances to level because it was more enjoyable. I didn't know much at first so my first set had very little defense and was high on stamina/agility like Paul was talking about. Although I got a lot of crap about that choice of gear even for pre 70 five man instances, when I replaced my set with high armor/stamina/defense gear, I found that my tanking was no better, and the extra DPS with the agility and stamina gear actually proved more useful in groups that were having difficulty with DPS. So, yes, Paul Stamina and Agility is fine for leveling in most 5 man instances, just don't go into kara with that gear set or they will laugh you out. The agility will most likely keep you pretty well off for armor for a druid that just hit 70. A quick and easy way to get that defense up for kara is by socketing all yours gems with "thick" gems and enchant your cloak, chest, and bracers ASAP with defense. That plus purchasing the clefthoof set will make it easy for you to get kara ready. As you upgrade your rings, trinkets, neck, and weapon to high defense/armor/stamina gear, you can replace those enchants and gems with stamina. Some people go for agility as an alternative. Either works, depending on what you feel you could best improve on.
Also, with my first 70 I heard a lot of BS about defense. No druid should ever expect to get 490 defense and any GM or group that puts you down about it should /uninstall. once you hit 70, put 3 points into Survival of the fittest and either shoot for 415 defense (thats about 150 defense rating total between all of your gear) or about 100-103 resillience will also make you uncrittable, but it wont give you the extra dodge that the high defense gives you. Being uncrushable isn't possible as a druid, thus all the extra armor and health you'll need to be able to take those bigger hits. Once you get into heroics run lots of Underbog for the Argussian Compass. It's a low drop rate but you'll be needing the rep to work towards your Earthwarden anyway. If you end up tanking in a raid, using the trinket will make you temporarily uncrushable.
Anyways good luck to all beral druids
Urthona Jun 19th 2007 8:07PM
That's a good q Paul. I leveled feresto myself, and had no clue about stats until 50. I was a classic nub.
I would recommend keeping your eyes peeled for "of the Bear" for instance gear and "of the Tiger" for soloing. The talent that converts str to int in the feral tree should get you by with defensive heals.
For instance gear, I'd suggest a check through wow-loot.com. If you're the type that like crafted gear sets, check into the mats for the Wicked or Volcanic set around 50, Wild Draenish or Thick Draenic sets around 60, and then Clefthoof for 70.
spritzup Jun 20th 2007 6:41AM
When leveling feral the question of strength versus agility comes up quite often, and the truth of the matter is that there really is no wrong answer. If you're leveling, I'm assuming you'll be in cat form most of the time. If this is the case strength will make you hit much harder, but agility will make you crit much more often. Personally I took the agility route as I found the gear easier to get, plus it processes my ILoTP, as well as building combo points faster. However, I can sometimes be hurting when I don't get a couple of lucky crits in.
At the end of the day though, you're probably best having a good mixture of both with tweaking to fit your playstyle. Good luck and have fun!
jess Jun 20th 2007 9:25AM
Paul, as a rule of thumb strength is great for dps and agility is great for tanking because you get armor/dodge.
bluebottleblues Jun 20th 2007 4:39AM
You assume that all tanking druids aim for armour value. How very wrong.
You also need stamina, agility, dodge and defence.
I'd say aim for 425 defence and fill the rest with stamina/dodge/armour.
You might be able to have amazing damage reduction but you're going to get critted alot and probally have significantly lower health.
Urthona, the "dreamwalker" set is the confused resto/pvp set known as moonglade.
WTB a feral pvp set without intelect and +healing.
Stegho Jun 20th 2007 4:42AM
You make a shocking post title like "Awesome Tanking Gear and How To Get it Easily," and then just talk about bear crap.
Do you have any idea the highs and the lows I'm just endured in the span of 30 seconds?
Do you have any bloody idea how hard it is to get shoulders for a level 70 tank?? And do not even point me at those Bold pieces of excrement. 38 runs in SL to end. I've been farming heroic Crypts for the Fanblade pauldrons since Herod was just a bully. 27 runs. I think those epic shoulders in Sethek are a myth (16 runs), and Maulgar only wants to drop the rogue shoulders (4 clears). I'm wearing level 66 freaking quest rewards in THE MOST OBVIOUS gear slot, and then I see post about getting awesome gear easily, and I assume you're actually talking about awesome gear for tanks....
Thanks for the kick in the pants.
radiator Jun 20th 2007 6:26AM
Defiler's Leather Shoulders is still one of the best tanking shoulders before T4+.
Laura Jun 20th 2007 8:46AM
Strickly speaking for tanking this site has been the single most useful tool in helping pick gear.
http://www.gurgleblaster.net/emmerald/Bear_Mitigation/Head.html
I just figured out what can I buy or have my friends make and what can I get from a quest reward...pretty easy. All in all low effort for items that are pretty high on the list!
Currently wearing: Stylin' Purple Hat | Murkblood Shoulderguards | Murkblood Chestpiece (still farming clefthoof leathers) | Manimal's Cinch | Heavy Clefthoof Leggings | Heavy Cleft Boots | Umberhowl's Collar | Dragonhawk Gloves (still need to finish Ara quest for glove upgrade) | Wind Trader's Band | Delicate Eternium Ring | Uniting Charm | Dabiri's Enigma | Cloak of the Valiant Defender | Braxxis' Staff of Slumber | Idol of Brutality |
Everything I've tanked I've been told "Thats the smoothest I've seen that fight go."
J-bob Jun 20th 2007 8:49AM
@ #9 - bluebottleblues -
You're mostly right. As I posted above, it is about balancing stamina, armor and dodge. But you only need to get to 415 Defense (with 3/3 survival of the fittest talents) to be uncrittable by raid boss - lvl 73 - mobs.
Stacking more defense after 415 is not the best use of gear points. It is more effective to put it into straight agility (or armor or stam).
PyroAmos Jun 20th 2007 9:05AM
I started tanking Kara in tier-quest leather armor items, and have since grown to 4 set t4 bonus gear, so I can give a decent description of good gear.
You left out the 12 all resist, 190 armor cloak from botanica, add 7 all resist enchant on it, and keep it on you for bosses/trash that use magic. If you can manage to get the all-resist +armor ring from 2nd boss heroic ramp, those 2 together are very nice.
chance to get crit at lv70 by lv70 mob is 5%, take 3% off for survival of the fitest talent and it leaves you 2% chance to get crit you need to get rid of with def or resiliance. When you fight bosses, they count as lv73, so you need more than 2% to tank these safly without risk of getting crited. This is less of a issue when you get good neck/rings (exaulted violet-eye, and badge of justice or shade of aran's ring). I sugjest 4def/6sta gems in your yellow sockets to help with this as well.
agi/dodge/sta/armor, at 20k armor you have around 60-65% reduced damage, at 32k armor it caps at 75%, so the 12k from 20k armor to 32k armor you only gain about 10% dmg reduction from armor. Although the main benifit of druid tanks is their high armor, thus steady slower dmg taken that a warriors 15k armor/70% avoidance HP-Spike tanking, you still want to invest in dodge. I recoment 20k armor then start working on dodge. When you work on dodge keep in mind druids have extreamly higher dodge from agility than other classes. At lv70 against a lv70 mob you get 1% dodge per 15 agility, whereas it takes 19 dodge rating to get 1%, thus you get more dodge from 1 agility than 1 dodge rating. I recomend all red sockets 4agi/6sta gem. As for STA, this is one of the most vital and visibil things for a tank, second to getting that 20k armor, sta is most important (thus red/yellow gems 4agi/def and 6sta, rather than just 8agi or 8def), and i recomend all blue sockets 12sta.
Next thing i want to bring up is arena set. These are basically free epics, get yourself on a 3v3 or 5v5 team, and spend a couple hours a week doing arena and if you and your team don't suck, you should be able to get free epics every 2-3 weeks. I recomend getting things you know you wont replace soon, chest, shoulders, legs, if your just starting kara, helm/gloves you'll get t4 in kara soon enough. Feral druids have the unique blessing of having our arena set very decent for pve tanking (its no t4, but its better than the quest rewards, with slightly higher sta but significantly lower agi/armor than T4). The resiliance will help with getting that 2% reduced chance to get crit from def/resiliance combined, until you get your good rings/neck/ect.
Mark of Tyrany is 180 armor, 10 arcane resist and some dodge and is a quest reward from quest in BRS old world, smoking heart of the mountain is 150 armor and 7 all resist except arcane and is crafted from enchanting (170 or 270 enchanting required if i remember right). If your serious about druid-tanking, it is only required to have enchanting to make it (its bind on create), but does not require enchanting to use, so you can lvl enchanting up, make it, and drop enchanting for another craft. There is only 1 other trinket that comes close to these 2 for druid tanking and it was just added, depleted badge (350 armor) which you can turn into badge of tenacity (350 armor, 150 agility on use (thats 10% dodge), but is pretty hard to find. it is BoE though, so pretty soon we should start seeing them on the AH.
the idol that increases lacerate dmg is great for tanking (drops in heroic underbog first boss, don't remember its name), until you get the idol from swift flight form quest.
I could go into the specific heroics/instances to get all the good armor, but i don't have time right now.
Hope this helps some druid somewhere.
