Phat Loot Phriday: Helmets of Second Sight

Today's Phat Loot isn't just one helmet-- it's actually your choice of six available from a neat questline in Outlands. So stick with me here. Things may get a little complicated.
Name: (Overlord's, Shamanistic, Druidic, Stealther's, Evoker's, Stalker's) Helmet of Second Sight
Type: Rare (Cloth, Leather, Mail, Plate) Head
Armor: Varies
Abilities:
For Alliance, it starts with a quest called "Ghost in the Machine" from Zoram the Judicator (geez, what did his mom have against him?) at Wildhammer Stronghold. Horde go to Chief Apothecary Hildagard in Shadowmoon Village for a quest called "A Haunted History." That chain will take you through about seven quests, most of which are soloable (one of them asks for two players, and one of them requires a full 5man group to do). At the end of the quest chain, you'll meet up with the man himself (and make a "mistake" that really wasn't your problem in the first place.
As for Gorefiend himself, I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll meet up with him later in the Black Temple (I'm not sure if you actually need the helmet to face him, as the questgiver hints, but you might want to keep it anyway). Meanwhile, you'll get a spiffy helmet that will get you ready to start up the level 70 instances at endgame. Grats!
Getting Rid of It: They all sell for different values, from about 2g for the cloth helmet, up to 4g for the plate version. Disenchanting any of them will hook you up with a Large Prismatic Shard.

Type: Rare (Cloth, Leather, Mail, Plate) Head

Abilities:
- They all have different abilities, of course, according to their title. You can see a list of all the available helmets here (the Scintillating Headdress is not one of the quest rewards, actually). Altogether, if you run this quest, you'll get a pretty nice pre-Epic helmet out of it.
- Also: All the helmets "allow the bearer to see into the ghost world while in Shadowmoon Valley." It's a lore thing, stick with me.
- And if you haven't noticed yet, all the helmets are reskins of the Tier 2 helmets (and in some cases, Tier 1-- see Warrior Helm above) that originally dropped from Onyxia and Molten Core. So if you never got to get your Dragonstalker's Helm or your Helmet of Ten Storms, here's your chance to get a lookalike. With better stats, if you ask me.

You forgot Mail! These helms to rock. It's an easy upgrade for when you get to 70. But Ive found you soon get better from other quests and instances.

Just wanted to point out that the scintilating headress is not a reward from this quest. The Evokers Helmet is the only cloth reward. The headress is a Heroic Auchenai Crypts drop.
Aquen Jun 22nd 2007 5:13PM
That appears to be reskinned Tier 1 for warrior... not tier 2.

Just want to point out :
- The quest reward is really, really good, especially for casters. It's worth going out of your way to get it, IMO.
- Most of the chain is soloable. You get one quest marked 2-man, and which asks you to loot an item from a group of 4 mobs... You can easily down one, then run like hell, then go back to loot the corpse. Should be doable by pretty much everybody (as a Warlock, I was able to kill them all solo.)
- One of the last steps involves a 5-man on the Netherwing Ledge. You need a flying mount to get there, but don't let that discourage you... A summon from a level 70 Warlock will do as well.
- Don't forget to equip your Spectacles when you fight the 5-man! You don't want to be the moron standing there wondering why your group is slashing at the air because you can't see the ghost mob. :)

Too true Poddo. I'll fix it. And yeah Aquen, I'm not sure why the warrior gets a different tier. I'll change that as well.

For casters the Evoker is a spectacular rare. Two blue sockets isn't ideal but can socket in +dam/+stam purples or pure stam for PVP if you want the bonus.
There's one gotcha: I see ghosts. The rest of your groups for other Shadowmoon quests probably can't and it's easy to get ganked by the horsemen pat. Watch your back and be prepared to yank off the hat.

There aren't many other pre-epic helms better than these. However, you do have to spend a lot to socket them with rare gems to get the stats out of them.

The Mail helm is pretty damn good. Put 8 agi gems in there, and it's one, if not, the best helm for a sv hunter

Is there any reason to hold onto this if I have better?
Is there any possible need to see into the ghost world in Shadowmoon after the gorefiend chain? or is that there as a nerf to make wearing the helm a bit more dangerous in Shadowmoon?

Most of the mobs you can see in Shadowmoon with this helm are, in fact, neutral to you. The exception, of course, is the four riders you need to kill, but they patrol a huge area and are only one group. Still well worth it.

IMO the http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31546 is a better choice for caster than the second site helm. however i still have it in the bank. i dont know if it is horde, but i dont think it is. and as for very cool and fun to do quest it is up in the top 10 for the ones i have done in BC. again that is just my opinion.

For hunters with teh right rep with cenarion expidition, get the glyph of ferocity for the chain helm, drop in +8 crits gems...and voila! A truly awesome helm! Better than the dream-wing helm(the chape is teh same, but the clors are different!)
