Legends of the fall damage

Ever since Mario missed the jump from the pipe to the floating platform, video game characters have been falling to their deaths. Falling in WoW is very annoying, since not only do you lose 10 percent durability and have to run back to your body, your body has often fallen into a less-than-accessible place. Plus, there's the humiliation of a totally avoidable death.
As a rogue and then a paladin, I've been spared a lot of falling deaths, but the times I have died are memorable. It almost makes me wish that there was a list of Azeroth's most dangerous drops, like there is for dangerous mobs and most looted items. So after consulting with friends and guildmates, here's the Top Five List for falling deaths in WoW.
- The Aldor Rise, as evidenced by the huge pile of skeletons beneath it. "Hmm, guess I wasn't on my flying mount after all."
- The Undercity elevator, which keeps magically dropping people straight through it to their deaths. The floor of this elevator must be as ghostly as the city's inhabitants.
- The Telredor elevator in Zangarmarsh -- the Alliance version of the UC elevator. Let's see, the Draenei have built two messed-up elevators, but the Tauren ones in Thousand Needles and Thunder Bluff work okay.
- Midair, anytime you accidentally click your mount macro or button or start casting a spell if you have auto-dismount on. My mount button is the scroll wheel of my mouse, so I find myself falling quite a bit.
- And, last but not least, that stupid mine shaft in Searing Gorge. The worst of it is when you fall down the mine shaft during a corpse run from Thorium Point to any of the Blackrock Mountain instances, making anywhere from four to thirty-nine other people wait for you as your ghost desperately tries to remember how to get out of the Slag Pits.
Do you fall to your death often? What equipment or abilities do you use to live through great falls? What are the most dangerous heights in WoW?

Thunder Bluff is generally a pretty popular falling place. There's quite a few ways to die there.

The reason elevators show up so much is because they fall at the same rate you do. So if you're unfortunate enough to run to the elevator *just* after it starts to leave, you find yourself falling to your death - a few inches above the moving platform. The Aldor Rise just makes it worse with how high up it is.
Really evil.

My Wheel down is fade for raiding, and I always have auto dismount on and I really don't know why! SO i lose about 100g a week to falling :(
I have an idea, spirits fly right? Why not let us fly in ghost form so we can get to our corpses more efectively rather than biting the bullet and taking 10 minute res sickness?
Blizz implement that and get rid of repairs for falling (only for mobs killing you) and make respeccs free (but on a timer) and i will LOVE YOU :D

The elevator in SSC moves faster than a player in freefall. Thankfully, there's enough time between the top of the shaft and the solid ground at the bottom to unequip all your gear.

I am famous in our guild for dying on the UC elevators.
But also I hate falling off the edge of the world in Outland, there is no WAY you can retrieve your corpse, and I've had enough mobs kick me half backward to know what that horrid OHNO feeling is..

what gets me is when I am on my flying mount and I am riding along from point a to b and not paying attention when BLAM! Guards mark! and before I know it I have a mace get smashed in my face and I fall to my death. Whats worse is if u dont fall to your death and u land in the alli town where some lowbie looks at you and goes /slap ... and you die.
good times :(

I totally agree with Aldor Rise, the number of times I have just missed going onto it and fallen down with it just below my feet.
Not many other places in which I fall down more than once... usually its just me being half asleep and not seeing the cliff in front.

No Offense, but if you have a button that when accidentally pressed you fall to your doom if you're on your flying mount... I would logically make that button as hard to accidentally push as possible.
Maybe you shouldn't make your middle mouse button your mount button?!

The worst fall death I've had was in Shadowmoon, I was flying south-east and accidently afk'd into the Alliance town. I got dismounted and died on top of one of the broken walls.
So I spent about an hour as a ghost, trying to jump from broken window ledge to broken window ledge. It was like some horrible platform jumper game. I eventually made it by jumping across 4 tiny tiny tiny window ledges, then making a leap of faith and rezzing in mid air as I jumped under my corpse. I think I got it right the 8th time I made that jump

I've seen people somehow dying in the elevator at the entrance to Gnomeregan. That gave another reason to loathe that instance.

My most memorable falling death was a few days after the release of BC. I had run afoul of a Fel Reaver and was jetting away from it on my mount. I was turned around watching it follow me and didn't notice the gaping chasm until I was over the edge.
Being a mage, I quickly found my Slowfall button... but since I was mounted it wouldn't cast. By the time I got off my horse it was too late, and I was a smear on the red dust.
I've also died twice in Netherstorm in a similiar way. Again, running away from an elite... this time I purposefully jumped off a tall cliff, but was smart enough to hit my Slowfall.
The problem is that once in Slowfall, you can't change direction or alter your momentum. I slowly came to the realization that I was going to overshoot solid land and pass right into the abyss.

I've never really paid much care to falling. It happens, so what, I'll pay the repair and move on. Having rolled a Belfadin on a pvp server, it's not really a problem anymore, thanks to those oh so wonderful bubbles.
The worst is when you have a lvl alli priest fear you, /lol while your running around aimless. Then following up with mind control and running you off a cliff.

When I was leveling in the high 40's in Tantaris, I would constantly fall into Un'Goro Crater.
My Guild at the time loved it - I'd scream "HOW THE HELL DO YOU FALL INTO UN'GORO CRATER?? IT'S THE SIZE OF NEW JERSEY!"

I too have fallen into ungoro.. I rezzed only to be eaten by a big tyranosaurs with fins.. but my favorite was running around with my new pally on teldrassil with a friend, friend fell off and died, so I jumped, bubbled, and rezzed, was so much fun.

Freewind post in Thousand needle is another spot to fall to death.
any one mentioned Black Rock Mountain? Raise hands those who fell and died in larva and make EVERY ONE ELSE IN INSTANCE GROUP WAIT WHILE RUNNING?
Sleepyeyes Jun 25th 2007 12:55AM
I'm cursed with Tauren elevators. Especially Freewind Post. I'm notorious for just missing the elevator and sprinting/lagging off the platform. Let's not forget when my mage friend tricked me and ran off the edge and I so willingly followed, until I passed him and hit the ground that is. Damn slowfall.

Falling is the bane of my existence, many times I've hit the wrong button, mounted my tiger and then leapt off the Aldor rise or some other convenient cliff only to realize that said tiger cannot actually fly.
Woops...

Heh, in my first week of playing WoW I got my Nelf to Darnassus. Overwhelmed with all the beauty of visiting my first major city I ran right off the waterfall behind the teleport to the FP.
Not knowing that I could could just rez at the spirit healer I tried to go back to my corpse, which was halfway down the waterfall. So I fell past it, *sigh*...
Tried to get up different tree branches didnt work, almost made a GM ticket about being stuck, but finally I made my way to the FP (Telredor?) and teleported back with my ghost.
Luckily enough I made it on the second try, but trying to go down killed me right away. Did the same routine again, which was alot easier now, becaus my corpse was already on the ground.
So after about an hour I found myself swimming back to Telredor. Only to find out later that the Hearthstone wasnt made for one time use only :S

mage's don't die from falling dmg, safe fall using blink is the best way to mitigate falling dmg but if you don't trust your timing then theres always slow fall
blink falling looks way cooler though ;)

LOL, this topic is dear to my heart. I constantly chuckle at the skeletons below the Aldor Rise. rofl, so many
