Wowhead down; implementing gear profiles?
The saga of Wowhead continues: the site is currently down, as in no loading at all. My first thought was that Blizzard's maintenance and the extra traffic from the sale news brought them down, but they've never experienced uptime problems in the past, so that seems unlikely. And then Centipede (thanks!) sent us this forum thread in which someone who claims to be a Wowhead moderator says it might be down so they can implement "character profiles and gear wish lists (ala CTProfiles)" that they were supposedly hoping to put up before "the end of the month," which is of course right about now.
So when the site comes back up, maybe we'll see some brand new features to play around with. We'll keep an eye on it and let you know more when we do.
Update: Site's back up intermittently with no apparent changes so far. Your guess is as good as ours what's happening here.

I like Wowhead. It is a good site and I think given a little more time, it will surpass Thott. A few more extras couldn't hurt this process either.

They were down last night every time I attempted access (after 11pm EDT). I was subjected to Thottbot in order to determine that my wished-for items were both random world drops.
Nogun Jun 26th 2007 10:55AM
@1 surpass Thott ??
Wowhead did that already a year ago, I sure hope the people with lame comments stay on Thottbot though.

Well if the guys run WoWHead like they ran alakhazam or thottbot, WoWHead will lose its awesomeness. RIP WoWHEAD :'(

nothing changed...

I needs my WoWhead! I NEEDS IT!
Laukidh Jun 26th 2007 12:10PM
It currently is loading after a couple clicks, but seems to be having issues.
Dave Jun 26th 2007 12:11PM
Well, I just checked the forum post and the moderator DOESN'T say it was down "to implement". He said "maybe" it was down to implement character profiles because that was something they wanted to get done by the end of the month. He ends his post with "/shrug" so clearly he was just guessing.
Dave Jun 26th 2007 12:43PM
Well - I just read the forum post and the moderator guy doesn't say the site IS down for character profile implementation, he says is COULD be down for that. He signs his post with "/shrug" so obviously he's just guessing like the rest of us.
Love the site WOW Insider, but your wording on this post was a little misleading I think.

From their temporary splash page...
"Wowhead is temporarily down for maintenance.
We'll be right back."
Mike Schramm Jun 26th 2007 12:52PM
Yeah, Dave, you're right. I made this guy seem a little more sure than he is. I changed the post a little bit.

Did anybody consider that there might be a server move? Makes sense that after a sale of that sort that the new owners would like their recent purchase on their turf.
G Jun 26th 2007 2:26PM
Or a DOS attack from unhappy players. Hope not, but it's possible. It went down last night very ungracefully, with no temporary pages or notices.

All you need is the new Wowdigger.com. Ad free, gold free and a spanking new site (from the worldofwar.net team). This new site has apparently been in testing for months, has just gone live and is now in public Beta. It has most of things WoWhead has already and they say lots more to come. Oh and there is already character stuff there like banks and character compare. Bye bye WoWhead and IGE!
Antheril Jun 26th 2007 4:59PM
@15: Meh. I took a look at Wowdigger earlier today, and while it's interesting, I found it to be slow and ugly compared to Wowhead.
Honestly, the thing that pulled me into wowhead over thottbott or Alla in the first place was their nice, clean design and fast loading speeds.
If wowdigger can't give me that in a better way than Wowhead, then it doesn't deserve a second look.
Pigeon Jun 26th 2007 5:22PM
Understand the word 'Beta', If you read their thread constant tweaking is ongoing, its been up 24 hours. I found it as fast as WoWhead and at least it's online. I for one am going to follow the development of this, it's ad free and no gold selling w00t!
Mike Schramm Jun 26th 2007 5:22PM
For the record, Wowhead is no longer associated with IGE, and their owners, Affinity Media, say they are no longer associated with goldselling either. We covered WoWDigger yesterday (http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/06/25/new-database-site-wowdigger/), and most people agree with you so far, Antheril: Wowhead seems to be faster and more clean than Wowdigger.
Pigeon you don't work for WorldofWar or WoWDigger, do you? Thanks for telling us about the site, but your arguments against IGE and goldselling aren't valid anymore, if Wowhead and Affinity are to be believed.
Pigeon Jun 26th 2007 5:26PM
I can't beleive people fell for the we're not IGE line. Only 3 days ago IGE were walking around Stanford University at a virtual economy summit with Affinity Media badges on. Perhaps you should do some research. And no, I have nothing to do with worldofwar.net.

I noticed wowhead was down earlier today when I wanted to research some spell effects.
Thottbot was a fair substitute, but I really don't like the layout of thott, it feels a bit awkward to navigate around and search properly.
And the comments are dire. It took one whole page of comments to confirm that a piece of Tiered armour I was looking at was Tier 5.
Anyway I just tried wowhead now, and it's REMARKABLY quick. I have a quicksearch set up in firefox so that I just type 'wh ' to do a search, and that has served me so well.
I looked at Wowdigger, as Pigeon appears to be spamming it like a pro (mentioning that wowdigger is ad-free and gold-free twice in two posts? are you paid to say that?), and .. well sorry it's just not snappy, and wowhead already ticks every box for me. And if Wowhead stays as fast to use, and is updated as frequently as it is, I really don't care who owns or runs it - it's perfect.
