A whole herd of Tauren, fighting an instance of bosses
I love this-- reader David B sends us news that he was chatting with this Alliance guildies about what to call a group of Horde ("Hordies," of course, but read on), and they eventually came up with a list of collective nouns for the various player groups of Azeroth. You know what collective nouns are-- like a gaggle of geese, or a swarm of bees. I've reprinted David's list below the jump, and I have to say, some of it is genius: "a blush of Blood Elves," "a den of rogues," and a "congregation of priests" are definitely my favorites. But there is some room for improvement-- "an annoyance of gnomes" is funny, but couldn't there be a better word for that? Maybe a "short stack"?
And there have got to be better things to call a group of Alliance and a group of Horde, so post your own ideas in the comments below. I have to say, though, "a murder of Murlocs" is just about perfect. Don't touch that one.

I'd change druids to "a pack of druids".
You can't really change the gnomes though...the annoyance is too perfect.

Wow indeed. I'm going to start using these more often.
"OH snap! A whole blush of Blood Elves just raided Southshore. There was a whole coven of warlocks!"
:)

Druid - a Conservation of Druids
Hunter - a Flight of Hunters
Mage - an Conflagration of Mages
Paladin - a Bubble of Paladins (could there be ANY other?)
Priest - a Smite of Priests (congregations are followers, priests are leaders)
Rogue - a Murder of Rogues
Shaman - a Shock of Shamans
Warlock - a Shard of Warlocks
And the proper collective noun is a Mrgglgrrrgle of Murlocs. Duh.
Warrior - a Charge of Warriors

I'd go for "An order of mages", but everything else is fantastic.
And what about "a flood of Naga" and "an orgy of Succubi"?
Roger Jun 27th 2007 7:41PM
Bah, awful formatting, sorry.
R. Knight Jun 28th 2007 9:54AM
A pack of Hunters
BenMS Jun 29th 2007 9:32AM
Nahh, illusion isn't a collective noun...
A convocation of mages? And with Shamans having the whole tribal, Native American angle, I'd go a lodge of Shamans. Surfeit just means an excess of.

I'd settle for "Abomination of Alliance" and "Honour of Horde" myself...
We all *know* that the Alliance are the evil ones in WoW... :-)

The words for specific animal groups are strange and wonderful.
A murder is a group of crows, got that covered. An exaltation is a group of larks, I like that for druids. Pretty darn sure I don't want to get pooped on by an epic lark. Being poo-exaltationed by a LARP would truly suck! They'd put on tuxedo pants and have pretend sex on my corpse after.
A convocation of priests, I'd think, though could work for mages too and ain't catchy. Fun to say aloud though.
I think blush for BElf is going to stick. Allows others for specific/mixed groups too, the SElf and the MElf and...use your imagination. :P
Rot of 'locks (a riot when they pwn)
Twit of twinks
Wall of wars
Moo of tauren
Stench of undead
Posture of draenei (or attitude or hoof'n'squid [surf'n'turf])
Hunter of night elves
Cat of hunters (so it'd be a cat of hunters of hunters just to rub it in)
Ale of dwarves
Plague of beggars & ninjas (used to describe guilds, we all know the ones)
Bunch of people saying gay, etc, in chat is a Barren, raid of lowbies to go do, um, nothing, is a Shire. A cliche is a group of RP or lore fanatics
ErsatzPotato Jun 28th 2007 2:56AM
Edit:
Rot of 'locks (a riot when they pwn *or get the snot kicked out of them*)
Kneebite of gnome warriors (if ever such a group exists)
A raid of anything level one is a machinima (see kneebite) and probably a barren and a shire.

Yeah, those names suck, they're alliance-biased. If you're going with 'an alliance of Alliance', then why not the corresponding 'horde of Horde'. And I'd suggest for Orcs, a Regiment of Orcs, or something else battle-related. For gnomes, something brainy, a Class/School/Section/etc of Gnomes. As in, damn, we got schooled by a class of gnomes...
RogueJedi86 Jun 28th 2007 5:42AM
Gnomes are basically little nerds, so they need a geeky/technical collective noun.
Maybe a Convention of Gnomes?
Diana Jun 28th 2007 8:07AM
#5 is right. An "Honor of Horde" or a "Host of Horde" work better. Hinderance is burdensome and as a Horde player it just has a negative connotation to me. An alliance of Alliance seems redundant. Maybe an "Army of Alliance" or an "Aggregation of Alliance" would work better.
I think a "gaggle of Gnomes" would work well because gaggle is just a funny word. :P

I would have said "a tank of druids." But that's just because I'm a bitter paladin.
FireStar Jun 28th 2007 9:08AM
@5 true true
Skarloey Jun 28th 2007 10:27AM
@ 8 I agree,
We gnomes are not an annoyance (well ok maybe a few of them are… most of them okay), but geeky works for the gnome jokes and their voices and higher engineers.
I’m also about a Host of Horde, forgive me I forget who wrote that, but a hindrance of horde is not fair to horde players, I’m for Host!!
Moover Jun 28th 2007 10:35AM
A Lab of Gnomes of course... ;)
Whether they are the experimenters or the experimented is another matter.
Angus Jun 28th 2007 11:35AM
Pack of hunters.
Horde of orcs. (where do you think they got the name for the faction?)
As for Horde and Alliance. Their names indicate a group of them.
A Horde or an Alliance is fine.
A Conclave of Shaman
A gaggle of gnomes was a good idea.
Determination Jun 28th 2007 11:03AM
A Procession of Undead.
lfnotter Jun 28th 2007 11:12AM
A thunder of taureans
A complexity of gnomes
A warband of Horde
A cohort of Alliance
A flight of dragons
A grove of druids
A nest of naga
An ecstasy of succubi
A rage of felguards
An oppertunity of goblins
