I have to change-- I'm logging out
Kayholder found a level 70 character on the Armory (hi, Subdural from Alexstraza) wearing all kinds of junk, and asks how the guy even got to level 50, much less 70. But the answer from another WoW LJer mentioned something I've never heard before either: "logout clothes."No way. I know players were concerned about being spied on in the Armory when it first came out, but are you guys really putting on a logout set before you exit the game? This guy's a shadow priest, but he doesn't have any arena ratings that I can see, and he's Exalted with the AV faction (not that hard), and only Honored with the other two, so who is he hiding his gear from? Does he not want Magtheridon scouring the Armory to see who's coming to get him this weekend?
Seriously, do you guys really do this? Is it that important to hide your gear that you have to carry around a completely separate set to put on every time you log out? And even if you do, can't people see your set while you're wearing it? All they'd have to do, I'd think, is wait for you to log on, and then check the Amory to see what you were wearing (or heck, just go find you in game). Do any of you really use "logout clothes"? And for the love of Thrall, why?

I have my "pimp" hat that I wear when in the city... But as a solo player that doesn't group much - my gear does suck... And I know it. Terenas-H Sorzroa of Planet Express. Let me know how bad I suck...

Ok this story just makes me sad...very very very sad.

I know on my lower-level alt, if a ?? Horde kills me, I'll armory him, to see his level. And 2 days ago, I killed a level 70 rogue as a level 67 Paladin. I looked him up just to see how I was able to beat him.

Well, if he is paranoid it is apparently for good reason. I mean, we ARE all looking at his armor! :p

He probably put together a group of gear he thinks looks cool. I have a suit of gear that I like to wear around towns for the same reason. Mine is a full tux and a pointy red hat. I used to have a dark "pimp hat" I wore, which was a BOP drop from Strath with +arcane dmg on it (which is worthless on a shaman).

It's not like any gear is a secret. Any piece of loot can theoretically be gotten by another player too, barring class-specific gear. There isn't a boss that only drops loot for one player in the entire game. And even if there was, no one else could ever get it, so why would they care?
Frankly, I'd love to show off my gear, as a symbol of my accomplishments.

What if the owner of the character in question is a gold farmer? I've made the mistake of being in a group with one in the past and inspecting them (back in the days of the never ending UBRS runs) to find a level 60 wearing level 42 greens.

/2 WTB [Tinfoil Hat] for my logout set - PST

I can see the forums argument for this. People have a tendancy to evaluate your gear before they consider your opinion. I do have a pair of blue overalls and russet hat I wear while fishing. Even have a Palamino mount and a kobold mining shovel. I sit in elwynn and fish and drink. It's good for laughs. I have thought about logging in that outfit and posting on the forums just to piss people off when they want to use my gear to invalidate an opion.

Seriously, tell me I suck - I'm used to it... I would love some advice for my hunter. Server Terenas-H(US)
Character is "Sorzroa" of Planet Express

Ok, I'm not paranoid, I play only PVE and my highest character is a level 40. HOWEVER! I can see why someone might have logout clothes. High level PVPr who doesn't want enemy players he regularly raids or battles to see his gear in order to get gear that would make it easier to beat him. DUH! Yes, its a game and yes there is /inspect (are you really going to inspect someone raiding you or killing you in battle grounds instead of trying to stay alive, don't think so) but isn't the point of this game to be as good as you can and pwn all? Even little ole 40 PVEr gets that. :)

You found his profile, so you know his name. If it puzzles you so much, why not just log in and ask him? Heck, I might just drop in on his server and message him (or mail him) so that he'll come here and perhaps shed some light on the subject. Then again, he'll probably just laugh at everyone posting about his gear on the armory . . . I know I would.

even if people have bad gear on. just check there reputation. if there exalted with scyers or aldor or any faction that gives epics as rewards, chances are that have good gear.
DontLetsStart Jun 28th 2007 7:17PM
It's not like it's any effort to wear your "logout clothes": wardrobe mods can do it for you. At least ClosetGnome does it, unsure about the others.
I thought it was more useful for ensuring your armory shows the gear of your primary spec (eg a healing character wouldn't be left wearing their dps farming set), but I guess if you're a tinfoil hat person, it'd be useful too.
Stormsinger Jun 28th 2007 7:27PM
Frankly I couldn't care less who looks at my gear. In fact I hope other guildies do check it and let me know if I missed an easy quest acquisition or should upgrade something. It might also help them compare me with others in my class/roll so we can work more efficiently in raids.
Of course, being a Druid I have a lot of log out choices. Bear Form + Tank Gear. Tauren + Healing Gear. Kitty + DPS. Kitty + my hybrid Raid DPS set. And should I cancel all my buffs so I can see the "raw" numbers when I look for upgrades or compare gear?
What's next? Re-specing before you log out into the most absurd version of your talents so no one knows your specialization? Never will fully understand the [Tin Foil Hat] tendencies the Armory brings out in people.

I have mixed feelings about it. I think members of Nihilum log out naked because they're elitist. I think some people do it because they don't want opposing arena teams to see their gear (even though it's all very cookie cutter at this point). I think some people don't like the armory and do it out of protest. You can't hide spec, which by and large, dictates gear choices so personally I don't see the point in logging out naked or while wearing a "fake" set.
As for the armory as a tool, I have used it to look at people I'm pugging with. If a tank doesn't have adequate defense, I don't want him/her in a heroic. It just makes sense in some situations to refuse to group with people who aren't spec'd or geared properly for the content you want to tackle. Some classes are less gear dependant than others, so yea, warriors often do get the shaft in this regard, but I'm not taking the tank with 420 defense into Heroics.

Not a single person who's posted here appears to have read my post. It explains a lot.

I have an addon - Outfitter - that changes my clothes when I'm in a major city. My druid's city clothes is the black lunar festival suit, and my paladin's used to be the tuxedo. When I log out in a city, yes, I do have logout clothes. However, I don't give a damn who sees my character on the Armory, and I even switch back to my main clothes before logging out if I remember. I don't see any reason why I would care who sees what my character is using.

I equip all kinds of silly things with my fishing gear. If someone inspects me when I'm fishing I'd like them to be entertained. I use one of those automatic sig generator thingies... it looks really lame when I log in my fishing gear. *grins*
