Addon Spotlight: PitBull

Well it won't win the game for you by itself, and its name doesn't really describe anything about it, but other than that it does pretty much anything and everything you could expect from a unit-frames replacement and then some. You can, of course, personalize your unit frames to your heart's content, more than any other unit frames mod I've seen, and that in itself is worth the download. On top of that, though, you get a ton of other features, all of which can be enabled for functionality or disabled for performance, whichever you like. Here are a few of my favorites:
- An estimated healing overlay showing how much health your target will probably have after your healing spell goes off.
- A built in Druid mana bar that displays when in feral forms.
- Frame fading that lets you know about whether a target or group member is in range.
- A moving "spark" that shows when your next energy tick will come, or when your mana will start regenerating after you cast a spell.
- Extra "target of" frames so that you can see what your pet or other group members are targeting.
- Configurable buffs and debuffs that you can place exactly where you want around each frame so that you can see what you want to see.
- Variable portraits, 2D for some or 3D for others, as you like.
- A raid layout that you can organize by class in one single column.
- Health and mana bars that fade out the amount of damage that you take, in addition to changing color according to various conditions you can set.
- "Banzai" aggro-sensitive coloring that changes health bar colors to red (by default) if that character is being attacked.
- "Interact lines" that show damage in red or healing in green between different units as they interact with each other.
PitBull is based on the old and popular "ag_UnitFrames" mod, but it's far more advanced. I had used ag_UnitFrames for a while and was just starting to wonder if there was anything better out there, when two readers recommended PitBull. I tried it out, obviously, and made the switch, but you may prefer the original thing for simplicity. Also, be aware that PitBull can feel complex and intimidating at first and there isn't much documentation to help you figure things out. Still, using it is pretty self explanatory if you're willing to play around and experiment.
Like Aloft, it's one of those constantly updated Ace addons, which means you have a choice of sticking with the version up on Curse, or you can go to files.wowace.com and get the latest bleeding edge version. if you don't like it for some reason, you might also have a look at X-Perl Unit Frames (less customization but similar functionality) or its sister addon Perl Classic Unit Frames. Also, if you swear by a different unit frames addon that you think is superior, please feel free to give us a description and a link to it in the comments below.

I can't see Grid included here. I installed Grid, GridDynamicLayout and GridManabars. All I had to do was select Dynamic Layout as the layout in Grid and I was rock'n'roll. I've seen a few times problems with tanks not appearing in the tank section, but that's ages ago.
Helps me a lot when healing with my shaman :)

Just downloaded Pitbull and I'm loving it so far My only complaint is I'm trying to find a way so that when I right click my player or target frame it'll bring up the usual "loot, raid icon, whisper, trade, inspect, duel, etc" menus. With this addon when I right click my player or target frame it just brings up the Pitbull options. I'm using clique for healing on my party/raid frames but I like having my player and target frames to right/click for menu options. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

There is also simple unit frames within the ace add-on framework (files.wowace.com) which is pretty nice and simple. Personally I think this mod "looks" more like a part of the game as well.

Having tried the three 'top' UnitFrames addons (X-Perl, ag_UnitFrames and Pitbull), I can say that Pitbull comes up tops in terms of design and the overall feel of it.
However, it comes up short compared to X-Perl in the functionality department, where X-Perl manages to display a lot of information in a confined area (party pets and targets), Pitbull has loose frames that you can't seem to fit in as well as X-Perl can.
X-Perl has another advantage, that is, the ability to view the HPs of players out of your own party. This might be trivial, but sometimes, I just wanna know. =p
Overall, I'd give a thumbs up to Pitbull though, because of it's easier on the eye and it's more configurable on a whole. I just hope they start putting in templates for party windows, like being able to put each player's pets under them rather than having 2 loose frames.

Wow, those sound like some really interesting and useful features. I've been looking for something that would add more why-didn't-I-think-of-that functionality to the game.

i tried pitbull a while back and while it looks good and i give it props for being so modular, i had the worst time defining functionality areas within if for clique.
so back to perl classic i went.

chriswt, set healthbar text to "informational" for party.

Cool stuff, I'm glad PitBull's recognized.

Why do you only link Curse and wowace every time you post? There are two other major addon sites out there, and one of them is generally preferred by the Ace community over Curse...

Does PitBull give a buff/debuff timer animation?
ckknight Jul 1st 2007 4:40PM
Tekkub, because I haven't posted PitBull on WoWI or ui.worldofwar, likely. Also, I don't prefer WoWI or ui.worldofwar over curse.

@3: Using mobhealth2 Ace2 addons can display "unknown" HP values as well (and Pitbull does just that).

I'm stubborn when it comes to my unit frames. ag_unitframes was a very poor offering IMO, and I haven't found anything that even compares to Discord Unit Frames. I may give pitbull a try, sounds like it has some interesting features, but its gonna take one hell of a mod to replace Discord.
Pent Jul 1st 2007 9:18PM
Pitbull pretty much has all the features people are complaining about it not having above... However it takes a lot of customization which probably most people don't bother over

Is Discord Unit Frames still being worked on? Or, does it still work? I used to use that one exclusively, but since the author stopped work on it when BC came out, I haven't bothered to try any other UI mods. But I am going to try PitBull. i just need an active account now. :)

Checking this out.
I don't suppose anyone knows of an inventory management addon that changes your bag contents into a icon/text-based list view? I've tried Sanity and it's almost what I'm looking for, but it doesn't work right when i get to a vendor (right-clicking on a weapon or piece of armor tries to equip it instead of sell it).

I felt similarly about X-Perl and PitBull, but came down on the side of X-Perl.
It just seems to pack more information into a small space than can PitBull, although PitBull does have some nice features.

Not to criticize, as I like hearing other peoples takes on stuff I'm already familiar with, but so far every thing's been kind of standard. I know everyone needs a place to start but there's so much niche and lesser known stuff that does a fabulous job that needs attention.
Discord last I checked, probably just before 2.1, was still non-operational.
Use MobHealth3, works perfectly fine with Ace unit frames.

I really miss Discord-based unit frames from MazzleUI. I loved those vertical bars and 3D models between them. I tried to get Discord and configure it to look about the same, but it was outdated thus buggy and coudn't get even close to MazzleUI looks. Shame it doesn't go as a stand-alone without all that overwhelming UI.
Has any of you managed to get Discord to work like it does in MazzleUI?
