Addon Spotlight: PitBull

Well it won't win the game for you by itself, and its name doesn't really describe anything about it, but other than that it does pretty much anything and everything you could expect from a unit-frames replacement and then some. You can, of course, personalize your unit frames to your heart's content, more than any other unit frames mod I've seen, and that in itself is worth the download. On top of that, though, you get a ton of other features, all of which can be enabled for functionality or disabled for performance, whichever you like. Here are a few of my favorites:
- An estimated healing overlay showing how much health your target will probably have after your healing spell goes off.
- A built in Druid mana bar that displays when in feral forms.
- Frame fading that lets you know about whether a target or group member is in range.
- A moving "spark" that shows when your next energy tick will come, or when your mana will start regenerating after you cast a spell.
- Extra "target of" frames so that you can see what your pet or other group members are targeting.
- Configurable buffs and debuffs that you can place exactly where you want around each frame so that you can see what you want to see.
- Variable portraits, 2D for some or 3D for others, as you like.
- A raid layout that you can organize by class in one single column.
- Health and mana bars that fade out the amount of damage that you take, in addition to changing color according to various conditions you can set.
- "Banzai" aggro-sensitive coloring that changes health bar colors to red (by default) if that character is being attacked.
- "Interact lines" that show damage in red or healing in green between different units as they interact with each other.
PitBull is based on the old and popular "ag_UnitFrames" mod, but it's far more advanced. I had used ag_UnitFrames for a while and was just starting to wonder if there was anything better out there, when two readers recommended PitBull. I tried it out, obviously, and made the switch, but you may prefer the original thing for simplicity. Also, be aware that PitBull can feel complex and intimidating at first and there isn't much documentation to help you figure things out. Still, using it is pretty self explanatory if you're willing to play around and experiment.
Like Aloft, it's one of those constantly updated Ace addons, which means you have a choice of sticking with the version up on Curse, or you can go to files.wowace.com and get the latest bleeding edge version. if you don't like it for some reason, you might also have a look at X-Perl Unit Frames (less customization but similar functionality) or its sister addon Perl Classic Unit Frames. Also, if you swear by a different unit frames addon that you think is superior, please feel free to give us a description and a link to it in the comments below.

Having used X-perl for some time my one gripe was that I couldnt make the frames longer (not bigger in scale just wider) without adding things like HP% and portraits.
I tried Pitbull but it seemed to be a real memory hog so back to xperl I went. It still intrests me, if they put together an all-in-one GUI option screen like xperl has it might make it easier.

I miss discord =(
I've tried a few UF addons since BC came out ... Xperl, Pitbull, and AG_ among them. I really like Pitbull as it reminded me of discord in being able to place everything where I wanted it to be placed, etc.
However, in terms of functionality, XPerl wins hands down. The information it gives you on buffs/debuffs, and the way in which it's displayed is far superior to Pitbull. Configuration of Xperl is also less time consuming and more straight foward.
If I had a little extra time to configure Pitbull, I might give it a try again ... but in general, I'd rather have useful mods out work straight out of the box rather than spend 1-2 hours configuring them for use (waste of time an effort considering most break during patches).

CT & CT_Raid are still the best. When theres another addon that takes less than a hour to setup, i might think about switching.

In response to the apparent inability to lengthen bars without scaling the entire bar . . . this is untrue. Inherent in Pitbull is the ability to stretch any group of bars to whatever rectangular shape you desire. If there is not an actual vertical extender try scaling it up and reducing the heighth(sp).
One other point, I just updated to 2.4.3 and it seems there's a lib that's missing.

I'm still running ag_unitframes after trying PitBull. I just couldn't figure out how to make PitBull look just like my AGU layout.
As to CT_Raid, I've long abandoned that to my current setup of ORA2 and sraidframes.

I'm still waiting for a Unit Frames mod that works with the current batch of RP mods.

Pitbull is by far the best unitframe mod out there, but with the extreme customization it has, also comes initial setup complexity. Since you can customize just about every aspect of it, it will take a while to get everything set up and looking the way you want.
If you want to go with more of pre-packaged UI functionality/look, there are other unitframe alternatives. But if you want complete control over your UI and functionality, Pitbull is the only game in town.
Just be warned, you will probably need a few days to get everything set up just the way you want. But it's well worth it. Having everything behave exactly as it should is quite satisfying.

For those lamenting the death of Discord, a fan-modified version that works with 2.x is here:
http://discord.tetzfiles.com/
I've been using it with no problems and maximum configurability for months, though I may give Pitbull a chance on my next clean sweep. I seriously haven't seen anywhere near the level of flexibility in Perl or ag_uf or whatever five other unit frame addons I tried before I found a working discord. How about a spotlight?

I'm still using most of discord. DUF, DART and DFM. They all work just fine for me and are by far the most powerful addons i have ever come across. I'm sure pitbull is great, but nothing will beat Discord in terms of customisation and looking sexeh.
If you'd like to dl it i believe there is a link to the post-tbc fans update somewhere on the general forums of discordmods.com

I've tried both X-Perl and Pitbull. They both have relatively similar functions. The advantage the X-Perl has is that it is able to mash a lot of information into one space. This is good for set up but bad for those like me that like to tinker endlessly with the way their UI looks. X-Perl has a very nice options panel, which is easy to use and find what you looking for. I like the way this panel fades out when you close it. However one of the biggest drawbacks is its flat appearance. It just didn’t looked like it didn’t belong as part of the UI.
I can see why some people might be afraid to change Pitbull to their liking. The options menu can be a maze of identical fly out panels. In some cases it is too easy to click on the option above or below your intended choice and the only way you figure this out is when your change is not what you intended. But if you take some time to work with these menu’s in most cases it was quicker and easier to make changes versus using X-Perl. I can’t get over how good you can make these unit frames look. They have rich colors and depth that X-Perl seems to be missing. Even though setting up for the first time may take some time, this is what makes Pitbull so strong. You have what seems like endless choices on how you want things to look. The only annoying thing about this addon is when your party members happen to be too far way from you their portrait is turned into a big yellow “?”. I’m not sure how or where X-Perl or Pitbull gets the models for each player but it would seem that since other unit frame addons don’t do this that Pitbull can figure out how to change this.

Putting a column of tanks next to a column of healers with the interact lines gives us hunters something interesting to watch during a raid.

Can anyone help with this problem?
I'm having trouble moving the Buff Duration bar. It's in the middle of the screen and only pops up when I select someone with my buffs on. Anyone know how to move this buff duration table?

I just got pitball a few days ago (I previously used X-perl).
It took quite a lot of time to get it configured to your liking. It took me over 2 hours but I can't complain as I think the end result is simply incredible.
The wealth of information it provides and the control over the way it is displayed makes it hard to beat.
