The Care and Feeding of Warriors: If you build it...

Every week Matthew Rossi brings to life The Care and Feeding of Warriors, a column meant to help our friends and even sometimes our enemies, the women and men who don't know which end of a prayerbook is which, couldn't backstab you if you turned around and wore a target on your spine, and who think Arcane Brilliance really should make them glow in the dark.
Last week, we talked about builds. This week, we'll look at a few first hand. I do think, in general, that many warriors are feeling the pinch between speccing for as much tanking viability as possible and having talents and abilities that allow them to grind and solo/quest in a timely fashion. I definitely think there's an entire column to be had in discussing this factor, but for now I'll just say that I am attempting in selecting these specs to err on the side of overall viability. I may have skipped a few obvious talents for ones that I thought helped provide more general ability, and I especially welcome commentary and suggestions.
This build is a tanking build aimed at trying to maximize AoE tanking. It's heavy in protection, but goes up eight points in arms to get Improved Thunderclap. Back before The Burning Crusade, a main tank would often have to request that one of the arms or fury warriors in a raid could switch into Battle Stance from time to time to keep a heavily-melee oriented boss like Chromaggus or Garr slowed, helping to reduce his damage. One of the more recent and more welcome changes was to make Thunder Clap work in defensive stance. As a result, improved TC now generates significant multi-mob threat on up to four targets, almost as good as Sunder and hitting more at once. Combining properly timed thunder claps with the tab-target sunder method and eventually Shield Slam, Devastate and Revenge can allow a tanking warrior with this build to more effectively glue mobs to him or herself. I find it works best on three mobs or less - juggling four mobs with this strategy requires very patient DPS and healing, but it can be workable. You could move points out of Cruelty in fury in order to get full Toughness or Improved Heroic Strike if you felt it was necessary, everyone's taste varies in these matters. Overall I find it to be a fairly effective build for tanking Heroic Shattered Halls and other instances with large trash pulls.
This build, on the other hand, is a much more subjective one based on three different builds I've seen used. It's a fury/protection hybrid build that aims for tanking in non-heroics as well as soloing/questing viability. It's not a good PvP build nor is it maximized for raid dps, although with points in Imp DW, Imp Berserker Stance and Rampage it should be capable of producing good DPS if geared properly. Any experienced warrior can probably tell you several different ways to tweak this build, from dropping points in fury to get deflection over in arms for better tanking to picking up Unbridled Wrath for more rage generation when dual wielding. (I personally don't care for UW, it never feels like it generates enough rage, but lots of other warriors disagree with me and I felt like I should respect their view enough to mention it.) A fury/prot tank is often underestimates because he lacks Shield Slam and other really nice high-mitigation talents later in the tree, but in my experience a fury warrior with Last Stand and Defiance is a capable MT in non-heroics and a good off-tank otherwise. It may demand more skill, but it certainly does work and has the added advantage of allowing for a lot more DPS when soloing.
Finally, we have a build suggested by several readers over the past week or so in comments and email. I tried it out on my tauren last week and while I really missed Blood Frenzy and Second Wind, it does seem to do what its partisans suggested it would do, namely allow for good PvP with decent tanking. Admittedly, my tauren's gear is pretty haphazard at this point, but I still did reasonably well in AV and Eye of the Storm and managed to tank Steamvaults afterwards. 31/5/25 is interesting because you don't get any of the 41 point talents, but it allows you to go deep enough into two trees to help increase your general viability. I went back to a full prot spec after, but if I PvP'd more I might keep this one.
Okay, that's enough on builds for one week, I think. I'm thinking next week we'll talk about how tanking has changed for warriors in The Burning Crusade.

I've long played with my mixed Arms/Prot build and have never had any problems questing, farming, PvP'ing, or tanking. It has enough to make you a competent tank (as long as you have the skill) and more than enough to dish out loads of damage. Back before BC I was more than capable of OT'ing and even MT'ing with this build in raids, it was a little bit harder (for me) but it was definitely doable. Of course it also obviously relies heavily on gear (dps suit and tank suit) as well for both roles to be viable, but then what build doesn't?
While I was levelling in BC to 70 I also used this build (but improved with the redistributed talents) and it worked great for questing as well as tanking in instances. Haven't gotten around to trying it in BC raids yet, but I'm sure it would be good enough for OT'ing.
Here's my BC build...

I prefer Arms over Fury because it also makes you very viable in PvP (and the extra Prot talents help to increase your survivability). That, and I really like the big two-handers! ;)

wow not many responses. the article was ok, but as a 38 warr i couldn't get too much from it. I would like some knowledge of different play styles, and techniques for leveling. Oh an perhaps some way to stay alive when soloing on a pvp server.

Some really good info here on builds. With the addon "Talented" and the armory, its so easy to try new builds these days.I would like to see some more in-depth topics on techniques like the "tab_sunder", Intervene uses and useful warrior macros. (Is there a mouse-over sunder macro perhaps?)
Maybe even some topics on a warrior's tanking in "specific instances" or bosses. Tips and tricks like that. Just some ideas. Keep up the good work! :)

I'm a prot spec, a MT, and a RC. Though your hybrid specs are reasonable for OTing in endgame, I would not suggest it MTing. Also, the trash mobs in 25 mans can be harder than the boss. I take prot spec warriors, bears, and prot pallies. I find that hybrid specs for warriors are a waste of abilities. When I want major damage, I pick a full fury warrior. Pair them with an enhancement shammie/kitty and I have a great dps. Not that sometimes I don't need an OT, but then, I have pallies who can heal in a pinch/buff/cleanse.
I personally use something close to your first spec with the AoE tanking in mind. But, I'd have to disagree that TC is some great threat generator. Yes, I use it but healing aggro will have your adds running away from you fast. I have to have dps back off for a sec while I cycle tab through with sunders. This is not as efficient as a bear or a pallie but possible. I did once make a post on blizz forums when TC first was proposed in Def stance that they give it more threat. Really, it doesn't hurt anyone, makes us OP, and we still have to watch breaking CC. No one listened. In the end, though, I adapt and survive. It will be interesting to see what else you have to say about warriors.

I have a very mixed and mixed up spec:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TZihuVbxoiuModez0IM
This is a utility PvE spec, designed to allow reasonable grinding and tanking non-heroics.
Since I don't currently own a weapon good enough to design a build around - I have a good 1h sword, but it's too slow for tanking, and a fair 2h axe and 1h axe (shield tanking weapon), and a fairly good shield, but hothing really world-beating in that department.
So this spec is designed to allow me to switch stances and weapons without taking away any ability that I would have relied on in another configuration. Solo grinding I DW. Axe and board if I am tanking. 2h axe in the relatively rare occasions I get involved in world or BG PvP. I am not specced to excel at any of these configurations, but neither am I penalized when I move to them. If I ever get a weapon good enough to create a build around, I will respec.
I heavily rely on Piercing Howl when things go bad. Concussion Blow (as well as Pummel) is my chief anti-caster weapon, since in PvP or solo PvE I won't have a shield on. Improved Thunder Clap is a good tanking tool - surprised that it isn't in the protection tree - so I dumped five points into an Arms talent that reduces incoming damage to take it.

All I can really say about some of those builds is Imp taunt. Unless you plan to PUG 5 mans everyday, it is a bad use of 2 points. Your group should no your tanking abilities and adapt to it.
And also Tactical Mastery should always be maxed out. You are not using all your abilities right if you arent changing stances a lot.
Now the MS build which is what I use for PVP/Arena/OTing Kara. I am confused as to some of the placement of the points. My build looks like this http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TAM0bAbqM0dbZVZfVdoI0z
I dont know why you would waste points on Improved Discipline? For the 2 more seconds of shield wall, I have never seen the last few seconds of shield wall save a fight. Its usually just needed to keep yourself up for a short amount of time so your healers can get back to healing you. It just seems like a bad use of a point.
I also dont know why you wouldnt max out Imp Overpower? for one point in Anger management? In PVP you dont last long enough, unless you have a healer, for Anger Management to really be a factor. And if you are living, you will have more rage than you can dump.
On the Defensive part. This is more gear reliant. But I believe most warriors have 490 defense without the Anticipation talent. So I dont know why it would need to be used, let alone maxed out. That also constricts your Arms points. And Second wind in PVP is a godsend.
Sorry if that was a lot.

This is the build I use for PvP, grinding, and tanking 5-mans. I have yet to encounter any issues, except for in SL when the Inciter had me kill our healer.
The parry and Imp Thunderclap help with tanking, and further down the tree you have Blood frenzy to help the DPS, with Second Wind and Weapon Mastery being useful (no tank likes being disarmed, and second wind is a nice heal when a stun lands).
As regards the Protection tree, I feel I have made the best use of the available points - Last Stand is great both for tanking and "oh shi..." situations while grinding, and Defiance, Tactital Mastery and Anticipation are pretty much standard. Bloodrage may not be the normal choice, but I find it useful in PuGs, especially where the DPS doesn't know how to hold back and you want some good rage early on to slap on that first sunder.
Feel free to crtique, always open to suggestion.
