Guides to choosing and leveling your pet
Recently Lizzie experienced the joyful tribulation facing many hunters as they work their way through from levels 10 to 20, puzzling out the question of which pet suits them best. This is one of my favorite choices in the game, partly because there are so many pets to choose from, partly because your choice really makes a difference, and partly because you're not locked into it if you want to try something different later. For you hunters out there who are looking into what your first pet should be, there is a guide to choosing a pet available on the US forums, which for some reason has not been stickied. It gives you a good overview of the different issues involved in choosing a pet, and sets you in the right direction you'll need to make your choice well.
For those of you who have already reached level 70, but decided that you actually want a pet that is only available at low levels (such as that pretty red kitty from Eversong Woods), there is a guide on the EU forums on how to level that pet up in the quickest way possible. You'll need patience for this, of course, and many hunters just don't have enough, even for picking up the highest-level boar in the game from the Eastern Plaguelands. Still, if you have the resolve, this guide can help you take lots of the pain out of the process.

IF pets level up every level after 20,should i just get a level 19 pet,so i dont miss out on a few talent points? cos they stop getting talent point s at 80,so they would lose some talent would they not? and does it make a difference if, say,i tame gomora, the boss turtle,as too taming, one of the little ones,or are they the same?

when my hunter was in the early level 50s, I found out about the ghost sabers and wanted one badly. so, I tamed one that was about level 19 and intermittently worked on leveling him up.
my hunter is 70 now, and after stabling my ghost saber for about 10 levels, I'm finally working on him again. he's up to level 50 and it's a slow, slow grind. I will bring him with me while I quest with a guildmate, or take him to instances with guild groups that don't mind a drop in the DPS (my hunter is specced for beast mastery).
my main pet is a scarlet tracking hound that I picked up at level 33 -- the lowest level possible; I fell in love with them during my visits there -- who is now level 70. I like having a unique pet because not many people use hyenas or have leveled some of the lowbie pets to 70. I have seen a few ghost sabers at level 70 but not too many yet. :)

This guide is completely unnecessary really, because the pest pet for soloing is a boar. There we go, just saved 5000 words.

Just adding in a 'fun fact'. Last night my guild travelled to 'the eye' (tempest keep) for the first time and we figured out the level 70 elite dragonhawks in there were tamable. So we decided that the hunter would freeze trap one of them and work on taming it while we took down the rest of the mobs. Before the next group he would get rid of it and tame another. Sort of an added Crowd Control method.
