Blue Notes: DoTs to be affected by resil., no gear swapping in Arena battles
Two resonably major changes have been announced by Tom "Kalgan" Chilton, WoW lead designer in charge of balance, in a forum thread. First, a change is planned to be implemented to prevent you from changing gear (besides what's normally swappable during combat, i.e. things that occupy the main hand, off hand, and ranged slots) during an Arena battle:
We do plan to disallow gear swapping (other than items you can normally change while in combat) once an arena battle has begun.
Ands secondly, something that has previously been the subject of much debate, with proponents on both sides of the fence. I think it's safe to say that it's the bigger of the two changes: DoTs will be affected by resilience. When asked "How about making DoTs affected by resilience sometime in the near future," Kalgan replied:
That's going to happen too.

how will dots be affected by resilience since they dont crit?
Rich Jul 10th 2007 6:23PM
They will probably do the easiest thing and have resilience subtract from the total damage of the DoT based off some multiplier.
Basically, your 400 resil will cancel out 400-800 (depending on the multiplier) of my +spell damage that's added to the DoT.

DOTs need to have a chance to crit then.
Mike Jul 10th 2007 7:30PM
Wouldn't be WoW without constant SP nerfs.
Nessie Jul 10th 2007 7:46PM
At first, this seemed like a ridiculous idea to me. I can understand how wild crits need to be mitigated, but DoTs are just part of the standard damage arsenal for Warlocks.
But I guess they need to compensate for curbing classes that rely on crits. I dunno, I think the whole situation is a mess.

Wouldn't be World Of Castercraft without the consistent buffing of casters and nerfing anything that goes against them.

"DOTs need to have a chance to crit then."
As long as their damage coefficient are affected by their cast times.

So Resilience formerly known as the anti brust damage stat will now become some freak of defense, armor, resistances combined.
Maybe allow spell penetration to work on it then? Or should that one die because of uselessness and bad design like Resilience probably will next expansion.
So a DoT can't crit, it can be completely resisted on application and can be partially resisted when it ticks, on top of that it can be dispelled by multiple classes doing nothing more than wasting some mana on both sides and soon resilience will reduce it's damage.
Maybe all the PvE spec'ed warlocks and priests were having too much fun in PvP anyway.

How will dots be affected by resilience since they don't crit? Easy. Just redefine resilience as a more general damage mitigator and not just a crit mitigator. For example, resilience = decreased chance to be crit + decreased crit damage + increased chance to resist dot damage.

It seems to me that adding Resilience to the game was a big mistake. I know that it was meant to protect us from big spikes of damage in PvP, but we've been given enough Stamina on our gear to greatly mitigate the effects of burst damage.
So, why not just get rid of Resilience completely?
afflictionbeta Jul 10th 2007 9:30PM
i think the best idea for making dots affected by resilence is to add a 2nd paramerer to it which will increase the DURATION of the ticking dot!
so dmg will be same but it will be "antiburst" as it takes longer to do full dmg.
resilence is for antiburst, it affect crits so far. so spread dot dmg would do it for dots.
what do u think?

Oh look! Yet another f'n nerf to priests.
lolwtfstfu Jul 10th 2007 10:27PM
yea what a nerf i wish ppl had full shadow resist gear instead!

DoTs may not crit, but their damage output is balanced around that fact. If they could crit their base damage would be much lower.
Other spells can be completely resisted and partially resisted just like DoTs.
Other spells can simply be negated by nothing more then several classes just throwing a heal.
And on top of all that they are already effected by resilience!
jlkennedy Jul 11th 2007 2:41AM
Resilience protects you from crits.
Dots can't crit.
To make resilience work against dots, you'd have to change the entire concept of resilience. It would amount to an across the board damage reduction for everyone. I just don't see the point.
Kien Jul 11th 2007 4:19AM
Oh JOY!
The only reason you would want to change armor items around are A) switching out your pvp trinket or B) Switching from engineering stealth goggles to regular goggles. C) Losing all your resil gear since it's useless against certain casters.
So basically, they are adding in an answer to getting DoTed while at the same time needlessly nerfing engineering again.

people miss the important text at the front:
"NEXT MAJOR CONTENT PATCH"
that's 2.2
which won't be out for like 6 months...

This is a much needed change. You warlocks can QQ all you want about it, but face it, you're OP. We all work hard to get all this great gear with tons of resill and then find that its useless agaisnt locks. So basically locks can obtain resillience and nerf everyone elses dmg.. but we cant return the favor.
Anyone who says.. "This isnt fair... dots can be dispeleld!"... i have two words for you.. Unstoppable Affliction. Look into it, its a good spell, i promise.
One down side to this is that shadow priests once again get nerfed because they have a similar counterpart that is OP. Blizz allways trys to fix warlocks (who need it), but they allways hurt the priest population as well, and priests are fine how they are.
*cough* except prayer of mending >< *cough* =D
viktorie Jul 11th 2007 10:22AM
@ 18: First of all, it's Unstable Affliction, and it's a 41 point investment so it *should* be powerful. Since most PvP locks are specc'd demo or destro (affliction is slow killing), the majority of them won't have that talent.
There are about 5 possible DoTs that can be put up at any time. Four of those can be resisted or dispelled with minimal effect. The fifth, unstable affliction, has consequences to dispelling, as it should if you are willing to invest that many points to get it.
Want to survive against lock and priest DoTs? Get shadow resist on your gear. If the mechanics of DoTs change because of the whining of all the little kiddies who can't work together as a team and heal each other, then you've just nerfed both locks and priests for raids and PVE content, and we all lose.
Paw Jul 11th 2007 10:31AM
I will never understand the nerf this and that whining that goes on across the various boards and blogs. As if warlocks are immortal.
They aren't.
Example: I can't think of one time where I could counter a sap that was laid on me by a stealthed rogue...who can remain stealthed after doing so. If I could tag him I could sic my pet on him. But they don't break stealth. BTW...rogues...thanks for throwing that distract out there so I know you're there, at least I can try to make a run for it....hah!
Just last night, in the wild, stealthed 40 rogue bonks my lock on the head. Down I go, unable to do anything about it. Lookit the pretty birdies! He leaves me alone...toying of course. Comes back, saps agains. This time he waits until sap times out then unleashes his dual wield flaming swords of twinkiness, stuns, gashes, poisons, slice, dices, purees, juliannes. Not a thing I can do. Dead 39 lock. Exactly how was it that I was too powerful for Mr. Rogue? Yet I never hear "nerf rogue stealth" or "nerf rogue sap". Boo hoo, Bliz likes locks. I hadn't figured that when Mr Rogue camped my @ss and handed it back to me 2 more times before the cavalry arrived.
I would love to see stealth gimped. I would love to see sap gimped. Heck I would like to see undead immunity to fear reduced to mere chance instead of full immunity. I love seeing an undead rogue coming at me. Just check to see if my SS is up and hope for the best. But I don't whine to the GMs and on the boards about it.
