Switching out for a replacement in instances
Last weekend, my guild was heroically wiping our way through Gruul's Lair, when a friend called to go see Transformers. I did want to go, but I didn't want to leave my guild without a healer. So I did exactly what you should do when leaving a group-- I dropped a /tell to a priest in the battlegrounds and asked him if he could replace me. He could, I told the raidleader I had to go, helped him summon the priest, and I was off to see Optimus Prime fighting Megatron. Horrible story and acting, by the way, but amazing action with awesome robots. So that's exactly what you should do when leaving a group unexpectedly (find a replacement), but unfortunately, it's not always what everyone does. Sometimes it's a matter of availability-- just last night, our tank in Shattered Halls said he had to log out, and we just weren't able to find any warriors to replace him-- but the point is that the responsibility for filling the evacuated role should be that of the person leaving, not the group. Saying "bye" and logging is definitely one way to do it, but it's not the best way-- what you should be doing is finding a replacement.
And how's that done? First, check your guild to see if there are others of your own class around to join up. Even if not, keep in mind that you can change things around if necessary (as a Shaman, I can switch prettty easily between DPS and healing, so if our priest leaves, we're fine adding either another priest or a replacement DPS). If no one in the guild is available, then it's time to go for your own Friends list-- I've met quite a few other players in PUGs that I usually hit up for group members when necessary, and sometimes I'll even ask them to check their own guilds for replacements. And if you have to, it is possible to simply do a "/who 70 priest" query-- you run the risk of getting someone who doesn't know what they're doing, but as my grandmother always said, beggars can't be choosers.
Of course, throughout all of it, you've got to be patient-- it's fine to send someone a /tell asking if they want to join up, but if they say no or don't answer, leave them alone after that. And if a replacement can't be found, both the group and the person leaving should understand (although for Transformers, I might have delayed the movie rather than letting the 25 man raid go without). But most people play this game to actually run the instances-- with a little effort, switching out a replacement can keep an instance run rolling right along.

Seriously, that movie rocked. If you think some of the camp, over the top acting was unintentional then you must have missed out on the originals.

That's nice and all, but sometimes you just don't have time to find a replacement. I was in Bot yesterday when a RL issue came up, and I had to leave in a hurry. I explained what was going on as quick as I could, apologized profusely, and hearthed out.
Of course, in the time before I logged, I got a tell "hey dood thats mad cool, thx for just leaving." I tried apologizing again, but I was already on the ignore list.
Moral of the story? Show some love. Maybe they just wanted to down the first boss, but maybe they did, in fact, need to go somewhere. Maybe by having that person on your ignore list, you're going to end up one person short on a run some day in the future.

How you find a replacement depends on what you're trying to accomplish at the time. If you're in a guild raid, it's better for a raid leader/officer to find your replacement. They often know who's on a alt and who's sitting at the door, ready to go. There also might be a whole host of parameters your guild uses to invite people (DKP/previous standbys/raid balance) that you might not be aware of. One of the worst things you can do to someone is tell them they can raid, then find out from a leader that someone else is actually ahead of them in the queue.
If you're doing a 5-man or even a 10-man that's considered a "non-guild-only function", then by all means follow the steps outlined in the article.

yep, write a video game social commentary, suddenly a movie expert one is. I like how the inter tubes work.

Hey guys, I liked the movie. It was fun. But the acting was terrible (John Turturro should be ashamed of himself), and the story (beyond the original cartoon) was just idiotic.
But using Optimus' original voice was a masterstroke and when the humans weren't on the screen, it was the best movie I've seen all year.

Hmm... If it's a RL emergency or important thing, I ge people leaving. And in this case, it's cool that you found a replacement who could handle your role well. But, ya know, people who, mid way thru a raid just decide that they want to watch a movie... well, thanks for coming, not inviting you next time. I mean anywhere from 4 to 24 other people set aside the time and you decide to bail because you want to see a movie that shows several times a day?
yeah yeah I get the RL > WoW thing... spare me. If I'd made plans to go see the movie, I'd not break them to raid. But if I've committed to a raid, I won't bail on it casually. Friend urgently needs me? I'm outta there and don't care if some idiot puts me on /ignore. Same for family, etc. But going to see a movie? Please....

Someone's just writing some bullshit articles today to make them some money apparently? First off Transformers was a great movie, want to write a movie review I suggest you find another site. Secondly, your wrote a tutorial on how to find a replacement in a group...How you filled 4 craptastic paragraphs with you find someone to take your slot by checking guild, friends, or the who list completely baffles me. Hopefully you don't get paid for this piece of shit article.

How about the old Press alt-f4 and post an apology in the guild forums the next day about how you lost your internet connection.

I thought the acting was fine, and suited the movie well. It kept it simple, I would of been more disappointed if they went with an epic long story and oscar performances, boring. I went to see an action movie, not a drama.
What I liked about the movie was that it didn't take itself too seriously. The robots were the main attraction, the humans were there as filler, so bad acting is fine (which was not that bad). Hey the kid did a good job, did the goof role well. I signed up to see an action movie, I want explosions and big guns, and that it did have. I give it a 9/10

Ooooh Idea!! why not start a movie section. Where we WOW players voice our opinions and review the latest from Hollywood. Next up... "Live Free Die Hard".. No... ok no movie section sorry.

I think some folks believe "bloggers" aren't entitled to opinions. Sheesh. Transformers fanbois please calm down!
Back on topic: I don't mind folks leaving for family emergencies. I just have a difficult time believing there are SO many family emergencies!
I get the feeling that it's not someone who needs to be taken to the hospital in most cases. More likely Mom is yelling that dinner is ready.

Jesus Christ. Think we can stay on the topic of the article?
I had an extremely funny SFK run yesterday evening on my lower level priest alt- (Draenei). We were crusing along through the courtyard until we hit the boss in the kitchen-like-place; at which point a rogue dropped out and had to leave. No problem. We let him go and he logged right afterwards, so it was no big deal.
A good 14 minutes later, the other rogue dings up a level (at this point it's level 24 priest (me), level 24 mage, level 37 pally (lucky us) and level 22 rogue (just leveled up).
Right after the rogue dings (mid-battle, I'm saying) he says he has to leave. The obligatory 'aww' 'do you have to' and 'alright man, that's too bad' from the three of us remaining; at which point I bother to ask what other plans he has- at which point he tells us he wants to head to stormwind and get his new abilities... so he has to leave.
I was literally dumbfounded. Here we are 3/4ths of the way through SFK, and guy decides he wants to just gimp the run so he can go back to town and get some new skills. I was completely stunned. We eventually convinced him to stay long enough to finish, but he was rushing the group along the whole way as though he had somewhere better to be.
It just completely confuses me how someone could leave a run that helped them level up, simply to go to town and skill up...

You guys are bitching about a movie review in this post? He posted one short sentence with his opinion. One. Shut the fuck up.
Thanos Jul 11th 2007 6:53PM
gotta say as a non transformers fan boy, I find your little post off. The acting was better than I ever expected in a film directed by Michael Bay, except John Tortorro. He sucked.
For the people flaming the people who flamed the movie review, you shut the fuck up. Some mother fucker writes a review in his post, he get what he deserves.
On onto the meat of the post.
Your missed the most important part if you are in a raid. DO NOT check the guild first, check with the raid leader, tell that person the situation. He may already have a replacement in mind/on wait for your spot. If the Raid Leader then does not or askes you to find someone, then do as the articile wrote.

Transformers - shit movie, honestly, extremely bad movie.
They need to get out of the 1960s and do some up to date action comments during the movies.
I mean...... wtf?? Megatron unfreezes and 'I am Megatron!!!! roar.' SO WHAT?? Did someone ask him? Did he know humans from before he was frozen? Did he had any idea what he's doing right there and then? And still 'I am Megatron'.... shut up.
daniel Jul 12th 2007 4:10AM
I think it's up to everyone in a group or raid to make sure they can stay for entire run and if you can't or are not sure, you damn better make sure your group knows about it before. And obviously there are emergencies but I don't consider going off to dinner or doing something you know about beforehand emergencies.

It's not always wise to invite people to a raid from your PUG friends list. PUG-ing raids can lead to all sorts of trouble and this should only be used as an absolute last resort.
I think we learned that recently. :-)
