Two Bosses Enter: Instructor Razuvious vs. Ragnaros

This week we're going to consider a fight between Instructor Razuvious in Naxxramas and Ragnaros in Molten Core. Who will win and who will lose? Read up on the abilities of each and then let us know what you think!
First off, we'll discuss each bosses' fighting style, as it will come into play in a battle between the two. For the purpose of this match, we're assuming the bosses are meeting alone, on neutral ground, and neither come with adds.

If you're curious about the full details of the Instructor Razuvious encounter (there's a lot to it we haven't discussed here!), check it out on WoWWiki.

Precisely unlike Razuvious, Ragnaros doesn't rely on melee damage to bring his opponents down, but instead overwhelms his enemies with massive amounts of fire damage. He has a nasty knockback (in fact, multiple types of knockbacks) that will hit his targets with fall damage as well as a high-damage fire DoT. And finally, he damages melee weapons that hit them -- eventually causing them to break.
There is, of course, much more to know about the Ragnaros fight than what I'm mentioning here -- but it primarily involves adds and raid positioning, and wouldn't have any impact on a one on one fight. However, if you're curious about these things, check WoWWiki.
So the question is -- who would outdamage who first? Would Razuvious bring down Ragnaros before Ragnaros melted his sword? Or would Ragnaros simply be overwhelmed by Razuvious' melee damage? Before you answer this question, we're presuming that both of these bosses are approximately the same level and strength. But comparing their fighting style, who do you think comes out on top?
I'm afraid voting for this week is over -- but be sure to check out the wrap-up to see how it all turned out!

Razuvious is complete melee. Rag has knockbacks and ranged fire spells. Keep knockbacking Razu while cooking his hide. GG Razuvious.
Shotgunbadger Jul 15th 2007 9:34PM
Rag wins, he'll simply out damage the Instructor, that, and he'll eventually break his weapon, then what, the Instructor has no other power BUT his "I beat the crap out of you" melee, once you take his weapon and knock him around he's toast.

Lol i just looked at the brackets and tried to work out my predicted winner (bored over here) and thought i'd share since this was my first time even reading this particular section on wowinsider (which is awesome btw now that i've checked it out).
The final will be geddon versus twin emps.
Geddon got so far because lets face it. 1vsGeddon = "Oh i'm the bomb...oh shit..its only me...uh oh" *boom*.
But of course geddon versus 2 = "Oh i'm the bomb...ah nvm my brother over here just healed me :P"
In conclusion...
50 bucks on the emporers for the win!

On a more related topic. Yeh...ragnaros would just knock razu back and flame right through his armor. No competition there for raggy.

Yeah, sad but true; put steel to a flame as hot as Rag, and it burns to a melty crisp.
Ragnaros for the win.

unless the instructor has been farming fire resist gear i don't think he will stand a chance... lol.

Knockback, DoT, DoT, Knockback, Knockback, DoT, DoT,
vs.
Swi.. Kocked back (whilst taking damage) .. oh $#!* weapon broke,
My money is on Ragnaros.

Razuv would DOMINATE rag b4 he could even spawn sons, he does WAY more damage, rag would fall!

Between Unbalancing Strike, Disrupting Shout and Raz's Deathknight Understudy adds, he's got a big leg up. Disrupting Shout is simply going to drain Rag's mana to nothing, and deal him double damage in health for each drain. Add in Unbalancing Strike as often as he can, and it's GG Rag.
Easy win for Razuvious.

I still believe Rag has the leg up on this one because of the knock back+Dot combo. Eventually Raz will lose his weapon and be destroyed by rag. No adds involved Rag gets my vote.

I'm not sure people are grasping just how hard Razuvious hits relative to the fact that Rag simply doesn't have all that much health...
Zifadel Jul 16th 2007 2:34AM
You guys are insane if you think Ragnaros would win. The problem with this matchup is most of the people have fought Rag and haven't fought Razuvious.
One unbalancing strike =5% of Ragnaros' health. Disruptive shout would drain all his mana and take a huge chunk of his health.
Razuvious, easily. But Ragnaros will win because people don't understand Razuvious' abilities.
Michael Jul 16th 2007 4:29AM
@10
Yep. Take the Twin Emps vs 4H, a debuff that quickly exponentially stacks to infinite dps, vs twin emp comparatively piddly healing. Twin Emps win because people have never seen 4H, or else don't understand exponential growth.
This is all a bit silly, like ESPN's Who's Now sports bracket.
The real question here is: Larion vs Muigin, who wins?
Junzim Jul 16th 2007 7:20AM
Razuvious before sons.
C'mon, you guys are talking about weapon durability damage!? Razuvious only needs 20 hits to down flame boy - he really doesn't have a big HP pool and relies on mana for a lot of his attacks. Disrupting Shout = Massive Mana Drain and Damage. Razuvius pwns casters up, GGs Raggy.
Tridus Jul 16th 2007 7:47AM
No, see the problem here is all the people comparing the two based on relative level, and not on how the abilities match up. Read a bit more carefully:
"Before you answer this question, we're presuming that both of these bosses are approximately the same level and strength."
That means that you have to level out the damage somewhat, due to the simple reality that Ragnaros is in Molten Core and Raz is in Naxxramus. Otherwise, no Outlands boss would ever lose to any Azeroth boss, due to the scaling.
If you buff Rag's stats so that he's also a Naxx level boss but keeps the same abilities, he blows the ever loving crap out of Raz, because Raz spends half the fight running back into melee range, and taking boatloads of fire damage. It'll be really fun when Rag goes "hey there's no melee in range, I'm going to do my super "no melee in range" AoE!"
(But yeah, the Four Horsemen never should have lost to the Twin Emperors. That was pretty lame.)

All I have to say is: "By fire be purged"
jess Jul 16th 2007 10:02AM
For annother perspective I think it took a good 3-5 months for players to kill Ragnaros (I remember posts to the CMs about whether it was even possible to do so, lol)
Ragnaros would so smoke Razuvious. I bet he didn't bring his FR resist gear.
Levi Jul 16th 2007 10:09AM
Razuvius has an insane amount of damage output--it's why you had to tank him with his adds, who had a nearly spamable shield block.
Razuvius would take off chunks of Rag's health at a time. To hell with all this knockback talk, he'd only need to hit Rag about 25 times to kill him.
disarrayed Jul 16th 2007 10:42AM
Going with Raz on this one, Disruptive Shout FTW.
Matthew Rossi Jul 16th 2007 11:01AM
I'm not voting for a guy with a flat top haircut who quotes Ralph Maccio movies over the living flame itself.
Mary Jul 16th 2007 12:10PM
Rag will win IMO becuz he can knockback and do ranged damage... Rav might be a melee machine but he won't be able to do that since he would be on his butt 99% of the time
