Reader WoWspace of the week: Crumbs

This week's Reader WoWspace was sent in by Crumbs, who has managed to fit twice the geeky goodness and a whole lot of desk space into one nifty corner of his office. As Crumbs told us here at WoW Insider, he had been playing a Hunter "forever" but when Burning Crusade came out, he decided to make the jump to a new character. He has since switched to a L70 Draenei Priest named Chilee of the guild <Epitome> on the Thrall server that he's been enjoying raiding with.

We were lucky enough to get a great description from Crumbs about the details of his WoWspace:
I work in computer animation so I have a pretty good computer, as I work from home sometimes. It's a Dell workstation with dual Xeon / 3GB ram. When I got the 24"-wide LCD monitor I found that the nVidia Quadro card I had couldn't run 1920x1200 with all the graphic options turned up. So I got an nVidia 7900 and it runs WoW with all options maxed at 60fps. The video card gets really hot though so I had to add fans on the back and front of the case.
The white/beige PC on the left is a basic PC for surfing and it's also my "TIVO" with a cable/video card in it to capture TV shows. One day I noticed an option in the resolution settings for the 19"-wide LCD that showed the monitor turned vertical. I tried it out and have used it ever since for web browsing. 1050x1680 is great for almost all web pages. The screen real estate is better utilized, and you can see further down most web pages. Sitting on top of the two PCs are a printer and Firewire HD enclosure for moving files to and from work.
I tend to get bored while farming so I have a TV there as well. It's to the right of the computer monitor and set back a bit. The secondary PC records TV shows and plays them back on the TV. Or I can watch DVDs and live television.
This is all set in my study/office room. The desk is actually two corner desks together to make the semi-circle sitting area. There's lots of desk space for junk and it's all right around you when you sit in the chair. In the wide shot you can see I put gutters underneath the desk for the wires. I did this after my dog chewed through a network cable that was out on the ground. Now there are no wires on the ground or anywhere a little puppy mouth could get around it. My next goal is to clean and hide all the wires running behind the monitors. They were all hidden behind bulky CRTs before I got the fancy LCDs. Now they really stand out on an otherwise clean desk.I know compared to my WoWspace, that's a really nice straightforward area with lots of clear desk to spread out on. And I really like the idea of pushing two corner desks together to make a u-shaped command center for gaming in.

I like the fact that he/she is using a second junk computer for wowhead, that would be so nice to always have wowhead/thottbot open all the time. Its such a pain to minimize wow then switch to safari and check thottbot for a quest

Nice setup! Check it out if you install the mod lightheaded and tomtom I believe I read it this morning on wowinsider its a great tool, gives you coords and information from other users in the quest window. also you can set way points with a click....check it out I installed it this morning and am very impressed

I love to see other people that use dual-monitor setups. I personally like having two monitors on one pc. Having my web browser, instant messaging client, a movie or some music, and even the taskbar on that second monitor is truely a great way to play the game.

I have a similar setup - I use a 20" iMac for my gaming needs, and a Macbook laptop for WoWHead.

well in my opinion he should get synergy so he could throw away one set of mouse/keyboard and run it through the network, would also give him shared copy/paste between wowhead and wow. i run this setup myself, and i do find it quite nice.

@ Runako, no thats a grand set up, with a lot of mony spent on it.
I am using an old Acer with 768mb RAM, shared graphics and all those amazing features - now that's a dull and cheap set up.

I wonder if it's possible to play with the vertical monitor. In a dungeon it wld be easier to focus on what's going on in front you (specially for healers/casters).

am I the only one that has to have a cat bed on my desk? If I don't have a bed for him, he tries to climb on my lap or sit on my keyboard, usually during boss fights in raids.

specs wise its a pretty average/decent pc, sure. but its a dull and cheap /looking/ setup, no question. (early 90s portable tv, grandmothers old dining table, mix & match keyboards, etc, etc...)
and again for the cheap seats at the back, lets see some interesting and new ideas for setups, I think we've done the whole dual monitor thing for now

@8 I agree with Daniel... Lets see YOUR set up then Mr. Nose-In-Air. What is smart is that the guy is using an older PC as a secondary machine to run Wowhead and other apps on it while his main PC is running WoW on a nice Dell with a widescreen LCD. And who cares if the TV isn't HD... Are you freakin serious!? I have a standard TV in my office and it works just fine for background noise or watching the game while I play WoW.

Why use a seperate keyboard/mouse when you can just use synergy? I been using it for years and it's awsome. http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

I've been looking for a set up like that and it never occurred to me to put two corners together

I had to laugh at that. I have a cat bed on the desk also. A very nice fluffy one. I have 3 cats though, so I often have one in the bed, one on my lap and a third either on the floor next to me, or crawling behind the monitor. I've seriously thought about shoving aside more space for another bed. I have set up an old computer chair that sits to my left though. That is the cats' chair. They can claw it as much as they like and they get mad when a human sits in it.

I guess I didn't really think about the aesthetics of the desk, the color of my keyboard, etc. I'm more concerned about the game experience in the monitor. I was really interested to see what people thought about the vertacle monitor. It's perfect for web pages.
I'm going to try Synergy - thanks to those that suggested it.
