Blood Pact: Fear kiting 101

With a 20-second duration and no diminishing returns, you can kill nearly anything that you can Fear, and if you want to know how, just keep reading!
The first step to successful fear kiting is finding an appropriate target. Because Fear causes a monster to wander widely, it's important that you take care when selecting a target. If your target is surrounded by numerous other friendly creatures, fear could easily cause it to run right to the nearest friendly mob, which will head right to you. Of course, you can control this to some extent by slapping Curse of Recklessness on your target if it gets too close to something else (which will negate the fear effect and cause the mob to run right back at you), but if there's a lot of mobs in the area, bouncing fear on and of your target is going to start cutting into your DPS and your mana pool.
I'll demonstrate using the target I learned the technique on -- Hererine Slayers in Winterspring. They're level 59 elite demons that usually required a small group of level 60 players to kill. I was attempting to farm an Eye of Shadow for my Priest at the time, and didn't always have a group to run around with, so I spent some time figuring out how to take them down on my own as a Warlock. They're a good target because they're spread out evenly throughout the area they're in -- none of them are clumped together in groups, so you won't get adds -- and, since they're demons, you can also use Banish on them if you need it.
Then, for a Demonology spec Warlock (that would be me), I like to Demonic Sacrifice a Voidwalker, which will allow me to restore 2% of my total health every 4 seconds. This allows me to Life Tap like mad and gives extra leeway to take hits. However, if I weren't Demonology specced, or I were fighting something that might give me adds, I'd keep out something with a taunt ability -- a Voidwalker or a Felguard -- to keep the target off of me and buy time to recast fears if one breaks before I'm ready. (However, non-Demonology Warlocks may also prefer the Succubus or Imp for increased damage output, and simply rely on keeping their target feared perfectly.)
When fear kiting, you're keeping your target feared for the majority of the fight. (In a perfect world, your target would be feared for the entire fight -- but fear can be resisted, break early, or break on damage, so it won't always work this way.) You're not killing your target with direct damage (which has a high probability of breaking fear) but with DoTs, which are less likely to break fear and will continue doing damage even when your target has run out of range (which they often do) or you run low on mana. Here's the basic process:
- If there are mobs around your target that are friendly to it (i.e. will run after you if your target runs too close to them), clear out the area before you start. The more room you have, the easier this is going to be.
- Cast Fear on your target. (If you need to pull your target away from a group, then pull it with whatever your longest-range spell is and cast Fear as soon as it gets in range. Curse of Shadow is a good choice to pull with, as it highly reduces the chance of your Fears being resisted, and if you don't cast it first, you'll probably cast it second, anyway.)
- If you haven't already, cast Curse of Shadow. This makes it less likely for your Fears to be resisted, meaning you spend less time re-casting it, meaning you have more time and mana to DPS with. (However, some mobs might not have high enough shadow resistance for this to be an issue. You may want to try your target both with and without CoS, and replace it with CoA if resists aren't a big problem.)
- Load up your target with all possible DoTs.
- When Fear breaks, stop whatever you're doing and re-cast it. You may find it easier to recast every 10 seconds or every 15 seconds -- i.e. re-cast before it breaks. If you get the timing down right, this means you have no chance of getting hit. However, I usually wait until fear has broken to cast it again -- there's more of a chance I'll accidentally take a hit or two, but it also means I'm not burning mana on Fear unless it's absolutely necessary.
- Use Drain Life, Death Coil, bandages, healthstones, and Life Tap to regain health and mana as needed.
- If you need to buy yourself some time, and your target is a demon or elemental -- Banish it! Since Banish won't break early the way Fear can, this gives you some guaranteed time to bandage, summon a new pet, conjure a new healthstone, etc.
- Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 until target is dead.
- Loot!
- Find a new target and start over again.

Boy, as a warrior, I hate fear kiting! But on my warlock alts, it's my way of life.

Wait, if you wouldn't be a demo spec lock, you'd use a felguard? What kind of sick 41/41/41 build are you thinking of?

Ok, here's what I still don't quite understand. Even fully specced into affliction (at level 55), the only instant DoTs I have are corruption, curse of agony, and siphon life, with immolation and unstable affliction taking over a second to cast - and even the instants aren't really instant given the global cooldown. As soon as I fear it, the mob runs quickly away, leaving me with not enough time to cast all my DoTs before it gets out of range. So do I go chasing after it trying to get into range so I can finish dotting it? Is there some way of extending my range or shortening the fear distance or casting quicker that I'm missing?
Go ahead, call me nubcakes, but help!

I think this kind of thing comes down to technique - anyone got a vid of some good fear kiting?

Number 3.
Make sure you get the range talent when speccing affliction, I find it invaluable.
I also use a totally differnt rotation from that above.
1) Pull with UA. That way you aren't trying to cast as it runs at you. Also, remember UA does not have a facing requirement. I always face away from my target when casting UA so I don't waste any time turning around. (Switching to Demo sucked because I kept breaking my own immolate turning during its cast time
2) While running away from the mob cast your other instant dots. SL=>CoA=>Cor
3) Keep running until you have a nice clear spot for fearing.
4) Turn around and fear as it comes into range
5) UA should be just about up so recast it as the mob runs away from you.
6) Chase the mob around reapplying dots as necessary. As said above avoid any DD including immolate.
7) Use your warlocking tricks if anything goes pear shaped. CoR for anything getting too far. iHoT if it breaks into smaller mobs like some giants.
If you have a clear kiting path and a speed enchant you can actually try this without fear. Good fun for some of the elites near enough to roads

@3 first cast immo at a max distance, then UA while he's running to you.
Fear, then while he's running you pop the instants and run after him a bit if need be to get all 3 instants. Watch the DoT timers closely. Fear again if it's about to break, before it breaks - if it doesn't break early. Worry more about keeping the instant ones up unless he's running perpendicular to you in your range, then re-cast UA. Immo's DD will break fear often. Only open with it and cast it a second time if you're ready to death coil immediately afterwards - followed by a new fear.

Curse of Recklessness makes targets ignore fear effects. Cast this while a mob is under the fear effect and it will run back to you. When it reaches you, insta-cast any other curse. The target will regain the fear effect and run away again.
Use this to "yo-yo" the target mob back and forth.

CoR is your friend when fear kiting. When the DoT's are running out or its about to get out of range. CoR it, it becomes immune to fear, but fear is still active. Throw Siphon Life (if you have it),Immo, Corruption and then Curse of Agony. Since you can only have one curse active at a time, the CoA removes the fear immunity and voila, it's running away again.

Avonturier Jul 19th 2007 4:14AM
I always save Deathcoil for when fear breaks and the mob is very close to me. It gives me enough time to recast fear while avoiding a beating.

@3: Get to the max range you can, cast UA and Immolate, THEN cast fear. You should have it feared before it gets to you. Or do the same thing that im doing with the 70 elites in eastern Hellfire Peninsula:
Cast UA and put CoExhaustion, start running away (stay in max range), cast corruption and siphon, then wait until the mob gets to the Immolate range, cast it, fear, CoA and start the fearkite. This way you also get the mob away from other mobs.
If you are soloing some elites and you accidentally get two of them on you, don't panic. Just fear (and dot if you want) other, cast CoEx / corruption / sihpon life on other and run in circles with that one and wait until other dies, then just fearkite the other.
As the last note: Always be ready with CoRecklessness to stop the mob in fear if you see it running to other mobs. Its possible to even fearkite mobs inside instances if you understand that one.

I love this series, the first time I rolled a 'lock I only got her to 24, and just couldn't figure out how to play her effectively. Eventually deleted her to make room for BC alts. Now with ICftB I rerolled a 'lock again but I've been ever so much more effective, even at such a low level (so far) after reading Blood Pact. Thanks for the contributions Elizabeth, and all you commentators. Keep up the good work.

No way Fear will last 20 seconds with a full dots volley on the target. More like 8-12.

Dont forget to stack spell dmg out the wazoo

Here is how I grind at BT as affliction
1. Face away from target and pull with UA.
2. While running away from mob x cast alll instant DoTs (and SBs if nightfall procs)
3. Wait for the GCD after my last DoT to finally spot and cast fear.
4. Mob will be feared away before they can reach you if you started running as soon as UA was casted.
5. Don't wait for the first mob to die just go ahead and repeat the steps for the next mob.
Like that I can clear pretty much the entire blood elf side of BT in less then half an hour. (The BEs on the lower sections not the ones in the upper levels with the demons.)

I know this was meant for Affliction locks, however i am almost full Destruction (spellfire set for +fire dmg), and find fear kiting still invaluable, just different than explained.
What i do (and i'm just posting this for any new destruction locks who are having trouble solo'ing fearable elites, or other mobs where fear kiting is necessary) is as follows:
Pull with Immolate, then either CoA or CoE (elements), followed by corruption or fear depending on how close the mob is to me at the time, then the other spell. I find that if i start casting Incenerate as soon as the mob turns to run away, i can easily get 2 off before having to conflag, and by that time i have broken fear. Shadowfurry, fear, immolate, and repeat until the mob is dead. I find that a lot of locks find fearing and nuking a waste of mana, however if i can keep a mob off me long enough to get 4 incinerates, a shadowburn, and a conflag or two off, i can put out at least 20k dmg, if not more (cast a soul fire instead of incinerate, or get a few crits and that dmg goes out to 30/40k).
I find that destruction, although less mana efficient, allows me to single target kill mobs much faster, and with soul leech i am able to offset my life taps easily. Also, a LOT of the destruction spells are very very mana efficient.

I have been fear kiting the elite trees in Skettis to solo them. They don't seem to ever pull other mobs, even the warp-stalkers, so the second I see one trundling around, I land on it and hit deathcoil (if not on cooldown) or fear. Then CoS (and DoT any mobs that I may have landed too close to), then start laying down the other DoTs. I use my imp for this so I can Dark Pact (I'm affliction) and have the stam bonus. Plus, the other pets just run around after the trees and might aggro where the tree itself does not.
On my server, there seems to be a lot of people farming these guys because of all the great stuff you can get from herbing them, thus landing on them and fearing first rather than from max range.
Lilith Jul 19th 2007 9:49AM
That's not fear kiting. That's just fearing and dotting. Fear kiting is alternating between rank 1 CoR and rank 1 CoA to CC a mob.

Holy grammatical errors!
Not to be a troll or anything, but this article contains a few of 'em! I fear (heh) this one had no proof-reading!
