Totem Talk: Tales of a Blueberry Shaman
Every other week, Robin Torres investigates Shaman issues, interviews experienced Shamans and reports her findings in Totem Talk.

This week I interviewed Xarkness, Level 70 Draenei Shaman on Gul'dan. Before BC, he used to raid with his Paladin but rolled up a blueberry shaman when the expansion came out.
Robin: I love your Elemental Noob video. Is that your current spec?
Xarkness: I have spent a lot of time with each talent spec, but sadly, I always find myself dragging my feet back to the resto tree. When I first dinged 70 I was enhancement, and had leveled exclusively through enhancement from 1 to 70. Upon reaching 70 I respeced Elemental in hopes for a change in pace, also I found my DPS to be too uncontrollable as an enhancement shaman. (Windfury crits = you are dead) After being elemental for some time I became quite fond of the spec. Time continued on and one day the guild needed me to respec resto for Karazhan. Upon respeccing the difference in my survivability and viability in PvP was like night and day. I not only felt incredibly useful, but anytime I was stun locked or assaulted by a melee class I actually could survive. Also my teams' ratings in the arenas began rising across the boards. As elemental or enhancement, I was usually always the first to be killed -- stunlocked, counterspelled, CC'd, or focus fired. The only real thing I was good for was getting Heroism/Bloodlust off before I died.
When you were leveling up, did you notice any difference when grouping with people not knowing what to do with a Shaman, or was it pretty much the same as when leveling your other character(s)?
Leveling up as a shaman I did a lot of soloing. The most common thing I would see is someone such as a priest or druid run up to me, buff me, then remark, "buffs plz". "I'm sorry I don't have any buffs unless you're in my group." They would then /spit and walk away. In the later levels once I had gotten to Outlands I wanted to do more instancing. The first thing you encounter of course is the preconceived notion that all shamans are resto. Occasionally, you'll run into a person who never knew that shaman can self-resurrect, or people who never knew that we can water walk. Of course these individuals, amazed and bedazzled, simply scream, "OP" or "nerf shammies!".
Why do you think there are so few Blueberry Shamans as compared to Belfadins?
I think that the ratio of Blood Elf Paladins to Draenei Shamans is simple to explain. According to Warcraft Realms' Census, currently 28% of Horde characters 10-70 are Blood Elves. For the Alliance, only 13% of 10-70 players are Draenei. Simply put, Blood Elves are more attractive to most people, both visually and functionally. Their racials in my opinion posses much more utility than Draenei racials. A Blood Elf can not only AoE Silence but in addition to that can gain mana back from doing so. Draenei racials give you the ability to heal yourself over time. Now as a hybrid class that can heal him/herself, what's more valuable to you, another heal, or mana/AoE silence?
What are the pros and cons of raiding with your Shaman as opposed to your Paladin?
I have raided as a healbot both as a Paladin and as a Shaman. In terms of the pros and cons, my Paladin is a very effective single target healer. Not only that, but the sustainability of their healing is paramount. However, honestly, I grew tired of single target healing a long time ago during my pre-BC raiding days.
Healing as a Shaman is much more engaging to me. Having to keep track of totem placement, making sure everyones in range, and planning bounces on Chain Heals to maximize efficiency is actually entertaining to me. I believe it's much more challenging to be an effective healer as a Shaman, and because of that fact, I feel a greater sense of accomplishment by fulfilling that role.
Do you feel that your Shaman skills are utilized properly in instances? How about raids?
I can confidently say that I have raided and instanced effectively with each spec. As I hit 70, I had somewhat of an identity crisis. I had rolled my shaman to get away from being a healbot. So initially I was drawn to the DPS trees (Elemental/Enhancement). Enhancement was definitely a viable form of sustained DPS, even after the nerf to dual wield windfury. Elemental's DPS sustainability was great prior to the clearcast nerf. The main problem I have with both of those trees is that they both involve spamming one skill endlessly. Not only that, but they have no aggro dump, meaning if you ever get aggro in a raid, chances are you're dead. I am also an avid PvPer, and the survivability of Enhancement/Elemental is extremely low. I am currently speced Restoration, and probably will remain speced that way until something interesting pops up in either of the other two trees.
Now granted I am happy with resto, but honestly I feel as though I've simply been pigeon-holed back into a healing spec. If I was going to be a healer for life, I should have never have left my paladin to begin with. I re-rolled as a shaman to try something new, to have fun with a new kind of hybrid. I have no problem being the best healbot around, but I can't make a montage video of healing crits set to dramatic music. I only hope that Blizz actually listens to all the great feedback they get from their community.

As a noob shaman, this makes me QQ a little inside. I don't want to be a healbot when I get to 70! :(
I so god please hope they tweak elemental and enhancement to make them viable raid/pvp specs in endgame. Just a little aggro mitigation would go a long way.

This is actually why my 24 Shaman is on the shelf. My main is a 70 rogue, so Enhancement holds little attraction for me... Elemental would be v cool, and I've actually leveled as that so far. I wouldn't mind being resto part-time at 70, but I really have no interest in doing JUST healing. Though a 70 shaman in our guild makes me wonder sometimes... Chain Heal is very nice.

I understand getting bored with a single role. However...
If your goal is to get away from playing a healbot, in a game where healers are in high demand, do not roll a class that can heal.
It will save you and everyone you play with some frustration.

I raid as an enhancement shammy, and I feel very viable. That being said..WE NEED AN ABILITY TO SHED SOME AGGRO.
It's sad when everyone else can go full out, but you have be so careful to control your spiky dps.
Maybe blizzard will work on us some.

@4
*Cough*
When you get an ability to actively and permantently remove aggro (besides self-res...), direct the love to priests. Fade is poopy.
*Hearts from a shadow priest* :D

I raid elemental and I feel viable even after the EF nerf. I don't get elemental shamans who go OOM now: do they have tiny mana pools? Do they have low crit? Are they spamming shocks and Chain Lightning to try to match mage DPS? With BoW, Mana Regen talents, Mana totems and the occasional buff food (+30% crit) I feel like I'm perfectly fine on long fights. Am I taking crazy pills?
On a side note, I specced resto for the first time when our regular healer didn't show up for Kara one night. It was fun, and I almost thought about giving 2v2 a try. Then I realized my resto gear leaves me at 7k unbuffed health and said "yeah, bad idea."
FastKat Jul 19th 2007 3:50PM
I happen to have a orc shammy from way back and before BC I was running scholo/strat/ubrs as enhancement. I healed here and there but mostly ran as melee. I'll never forget the days of SSing hunters with a TuF/Arcanite Reaper in AV. Once I got to 70, the amount of gear itemized for enhancement just plained sucked compared to the caster stuff. So I bent to blizzard's will and speced mostly resto and enhancement upto 2 handers. Wow what a difference! Even in mediocre gear I end battles at full health/ mana. In pvp I have had 2 rogues actually give up trying to kill me at a flag in AB. At 70 a shaman's strength has been pushed via gear and other classes talents into resto.
Tiforix Jul 19th 2007 4:22PM
I am truly astounded at how hard Resto Shamans are to kill. Just last night a Rogue and I (Moonkin) chased one up into Trollbane Hall in AB. I spammed Wrath and Insect Swarm at him, while the Rogue did his stab stab thing. After probably a full minute of that, I was OOM, and the Shaman walked out. I did at least 12K damage to him, and I'm sure the Rogue did at least that much, but the Shaman had healed himself through all of that with seemingly little effort.
Rob Jul 19th 2007 4:37PM
LOL, yeah, I get people that buff my Shammy then kind of stand around expectantly after. I usually just throw water breathing and/or walking on them and go back to what I was doing. It's pretty funny when you're in the middle of Tanaris or something. :)
Brownberryshaman Jul 19th 2007 5:55PM
I know what you mean about that. usually I just drop one of each totem and ask if they got a buff from them. When they dont I suddenly remember that they have to be a part of my party and they call me a noob and leave me alone. It works.
I don't see that so much anymore since I play Horde again. Maybe hordies are just used to not getting any love from non partied shammy. I wish the reagents werent required for water breathing/walking. I might be more free with those buffs then.
Kraesia Jul 19th 2007 6:37PM
As an Alliance Shaman I've had a few people be very hostile to me. One time a group of 50-60s tried to make me get off the boat in Menethil just because they didn't want Shamans on Alliance. I'm not one to pout but that made me pretty angry.
Being an alliance shaman is challenging but to me it's a class you can really be proud to lvl up and make it to the top, since not very many do.
Grimtar Jul 20th 2007 2:19AM
@8: Your Rogue needs to l2kick. Interrupt a Shaman heal and the only thing he can do is drop a totem and cast Flame/Frost Shock. Meanwhile, you have a few seconds to unload your DPS.
@Robin: So what I want to know is - where are the Shaman posts about macros and addons and totems and group setup? This interview stuff is nice and all, but we already know that Shamans mostly suck as anything but a healer. We dont need to hear about how people rolled the class to do DPS and then found that it wasnt viable. We know. Thats how most of us got here.
As much as Im grateful that Shamans are getting some love from at least one WoW site, Totem Talk has got nothing on BRK or TLAHTSI - or even Encrypted Text! Please post something useful and relevant!
nic Jul 20th 2007 9:30AM
@12 Totally agree. Doesn't this come out every other week aswell, compared to every week for the other classes? Don't get me wrong, something is better than nothing but we seem to be the only class missing serious class specific forums/blogs/chats.
Rihahn Jul 20th 2007 9:58AM
I play an elemental shaman (3/5 T4, lots of arena gear, the good stuff from everything up to SSC) and while I can completely evaporate someone in PvP in about 5 seconds, my raiding use is *very* limited.
Clearing trash to get to the bosses I'm right below the extremely over-powered hunter in 10-man, but when we get to the boss I'm oom about a third of the way through the fight and fall to just above the MT in damage output - an elemental shammy oom is about useless.
Now, when I grab my equally impressive healing gear, drop the 50g on a respec, and head for the raid encounter, I'm a god. I make the holy-spec paladins in the guild want to play shaman and the holy-spec priests want to go shadow...
I also have a very good enhance set, but enhance is - as stated above - only useful for getting to the end game...
So, given that I've tried to play all the possible specs *and* have epic gear for all three, I have to say that in a raid setting we are supposed to be resto.
blackscreen Jul 20th 2007 10:55AM
Man, a lot of people slamming enhancement for raiding. My Shaman (Jumarco, Cenarion Circle)has been enhance since day one and I wouldn't change it. The secret to keeping threat down in end game for enhance is... Raid with a pally! Blessing of Salvation keeps me alive. Otherwise it's basically a matter of knowing when to lay off the StormStrike and shocks, and giving your MT the appropriate head start. Even working around these issues, I still lead my raids in damage across full clears of Kara (about 3.3-3.5 million points of damage when we 1 shot through). Yes, enhance is really tough to play in PvP. But there seems to be this notion that enhance cannot raid, and it's just plain WRONG.
lolagranola Aug 2nd 2007 2:05PM
I play a lvl 70 shaman and did the same thing. I leveled enhancement and loved it. PVE soloing, I thrash stuff. Once I started doing Outlands instances runs, I found that I had to throttle my dps CONSTANTLY. I could easily double or triple the threat of the MT on a boss fight if I wanted to. At 70, I hit the identity crisis where I couldn't survive in PVP or arena despite my great melee dps, and I couldn't survive in parties or raids because of my ridiculous threat. I switched to resto and I absolutely love it, which is a surprise because I had no desire to prior to playing. Other than super-geared mages with insane crits or warlocks with the felhunter, I feel pretty comfortable taking down most anything. My survivability is ridiculous. I've main-healed plenty of groups and provide a big resource in PVP. The elementals are phenomenal. I wish I could use them in arenas since the fire elemental is such a source of DPS for me. I'm really enjoying the class resto, but I really hope one day to return to enhancement. The only way I see that happening is if a.) Blizzard deals with the threat issue or b.) my gear gets to a point where my dps is so high that it will help mitigate my threat issues. Under the current circumstances, with a drakefist 85 dps mace and a decent off-hand, I'm not viable in parties when they could just bring a rogue. Come on blizzard, I don't have a CC ability. Can I at least not have to throttle my dps?
