Two bosses enter... but only one will get to leave in WoW Insider's own fantasy deathmatch. We've selected 32 of the most interesting bosses in the game and every week we're matching a pair of them up to see who comes out the winner. In the end, only one boss will remain standing. This week we're going to consider a match between Ossirian the Unscarred for Ahn'Qiraj and Al'ar, the Pheonix God in the Eye of Tempest Keep. If it sounds unfair to you, remember -- we're comparing the fighting style of the two bosses, assuming they're of approximately equal level, health, and damage. Who will win this fight is for you to decide -- but first, let's discuss each bosses' abilities.
First up, Ossirian the Unscarred, the final boss in 20-player wing of Ahn'Qiraj. And don't make the limited number of players involved fool you, he's a tough fight.
First off, he starts the fight in "Supreme Mode" -- where he moves faster than an epic mount and hits harder than usual. Crystals spawn nearby him, which you can click to bring him out of supreme mode, and make him vulnerable to a specific type of spell damage, for 45 seconds. Now, the real question -- would an NPC catch on about how to deactivate Supreme Mode, or would Ossirian simply be in Supreme Mode for the entire fight?
Beyond that, Ossirian can stun the player with aggro, cast tornados throughout the area which do some good damage, has an AoE curse of tongues (slows down casting), and has a warstomp which knocks people into the air (doing both damage and fall damage).

WoWWiki.
Al'ar may be found in the Eye of Tempest Keep. If you think that must make him a pretty high end boss, you've guessed right. So what makes Al'ar so tough? Well, he has a ranged fire AoE called Fire Quill, which spells death for any player in range, he can spawn patches of fire that do serious damage to anyone who wanders into them, he can summon meteors that do fire damage & spawn adds, and finally, once you kill him -- he comes back for more. He is, after all, a pheonix, though he does only seem to have two lives.
For full details on Al'ar, check out his page on
WoWWiki.
So who wins and who loses? That's what you get to tell us. Remember, again, though these two bosses come from dungeons of vastly different difficulty, we're presuming they're approximately the same level, health, and damage output. (Because what's the fun in these fights if we start out knowing Illidan wins in the end?) So let us know your opinion -- who would win?
I'm afraid the polls are closed and voting is over for this week's fight. However, you can read up on the results in our
wrap-up!

The NPCs are programmed to fight a certain way. Al'ar is not programmed to click the stones to get Ossirian our of his supreme mode. If their health is approximately the same, then Ossirian would easily kill Al'ar, who's AoE will not even do much damage to Ossirian, because he is all by himself.
Ossirian's tornadoes will also take care of the adds.

Its going to take a hell of a boss to kill Ossirian in Supreme Mode. No NPC is gonna take him out of Supreme Mode.

Ossirian hands down. Perma-supreme mode. Plus, Alar's most powerful AoE spells require more then one person in range. Plus, Ossirian has a curse of tongues, and he has a couple stuns. Providing they don't have a CD, stunlock Al'ar to death twice in a row and it's GG Al'ar.

Let's not forget that Ossirian has heavy magic resistance. Without the use of the crystals, Al'ar's attacks (which seem to be primarily fire spells) will barely touch him. And even if Al'ar figured out that he needs to activate the crystals, Ossirian is only going to be susceptible to fire about 1/5 of the time.
Definitely Ossirian.

After reading WoW Wiki, It sounds like taking Ossirian out of Supreme Mode only makes him vulnerable (Shortening the fight) as well as him loosing his high melee hits. He only has about 400K health (Yes I know, Only) while Al'ar has over 2 Mil and reincarnates after being killed the first time only. I think that it would be close, but in the end come down to highest health. While it would be a long and annoying fight (Al'ar may even get killed the first time) I think in the end Al'ar will win because of overall health and some of his spells slowly ticking away Ossirians insane Supreme Mode stats. Of course I have never fought either, but I don't think that should matter as long as you read the facts and think it out.

Sadly, people will only pick which one looks cooler. Ossirian will win in a fight, but the readers will only look at the pictures.
nebuchadnezzar447 Jul 22nd 2007 10:54PM
Oh yea and Zuty it says "assuming they're of approximately equal level, health, and damage."

I am sick of all these people constantly posting and reposting about the bosses health. IT DOESN'T MATTER, THEY HAVE THE SAME HP. So please people, read the damn rules before voting.

It's a 2v1 fight... the bird wins I think.
Arann Jul 22nd 2007 11:50PM
Well, here's the big kicker for me: you can't interact with an object (the "gear" cursor) if you're not a humanoid (my days as a feral druid were filled with curses flung at quest objects and chests).
Even if Al'ar could use the crystals, as long as Ossirian's weakness doesn't come up fire, he's in decent shape.
zyburn Jul 23rd 2007 1:10AM
I think people are forgetting Al'ar is a bird... who can spit fire... and while Ossirian may be magic resistant and a super badass while in supreme mode... he is still your friendly neighborhood melee boss. Al'ar can pummel him from way up top and call it good.
Lostmimic Jul 23rd 2007 1:25AM
I have to agree, if alar stays flying above melee range he can just widdle ossirian down to nothing
RogueJedi86 Jul 23rd 2007 1:44AM
Assuming equal health, you really can't discount Al'ar having 2 lives. That effectively means Al'ar has twice the health of Ossirian, unless we're assuming Al'ar only has half the health of Ossirian, which either way defeats the claim of them having equal HP.
That fallacy aside, Al'ar has 2 lives, so he would last twice as long. Al'ar also flies, and I assume Ossirian is primarily melee, with few ranged counter-measures, so Al'ar may win in the end.
Jason Jul 23rd 2007 1:52AM
@Zuty: As mentioned, same health. A'lar's 2 mil is Ossirian's 2 mil.
@zyburn: When Ossirian goes supreme and starts chain stunning A'lar, it'll be GG Alar, especially since he'll have no vulnerabilities to magic, and something on the order of what we'd call 350 FR or better. He wouldn't be taking damage, not to mention that A'lar would be under constant Curse of Tongues.
Winner: Ossirian, hands down here. He could phone this one in.
Jason Jul 23rd 2007 1:55AM
Additional note, since people seem to be insisting that A'lar flies; even though he's a bird, he still does all his damage in melee range. No sitting back and lobbing fireballs for him. Do yourselves a favor and read the WoWWiki links they so lovingly provide.
RogueJedi86 Jul 23rd 2007 2:08AM
@Jason/14
Not quite. Assuming equal health, Al'ar has 4 million to Ossirian's 2 million, since Al'ar resurrects with full health after he dies once. The only exception is if we're under the assumption that Ossirian has 2 million, and Al'ar only has 1 million, which is still unequal health.
Nyctanessa Jul 23rd 2007 3:32AM
It's Phoenix, not Pheonix.
Venkman90 Jul 23rd 2007 4:18AM
cue people saying "cazuals dun know alar kk"
These contests are getting silly, how can we imagine how it would play out, couldnt alar just fly above and drop fire on Os? that in the "rules"?
zyburn Jul 23rd 2007 4:50AM
@Jason,
Al'ar has mult. attacks that can be done from the air.
Fire quils, flame patches, and Meteors.
Oh and Ossirian's crystals only make him weak to certain types of magic, he isn't immune otherwise.
Ossirian can still be DPS'd while in supreme mode, It's just that we as players are normally running from him... But I doubt he can one-shot Al'ar.
Either way, assuming both bosses are of equal power and health... as long as the fight goes on for more than 10-min Al'ar will enrage... giving him the upper hand against Ossirian. And I'm sure re-birth will buy him that extra time if needed.
Pandoire Jul 23rd 2007 6:32AM
if al`ar flies out of melee range then ossirion evades, when al`ar dies ossirion will reset and therefore also have full hp again, so al`ar is cleary trying to sploit to win... he gets banned and quits wow.
