WoW comic confirmed
It's official: there's going to be a WoW comic (a few days ago we reported on intriguing hints to that effect). Here is DC's own page on it; it looks like it's going to be published under their Wildstorm line, which does a lot of fantasy-type stuff of (in my opinion) uneven quality. The release date for #1 is November 14th, and here are the credits: Written by Walter Simonson; Art by Ludo Lullabi and Sandra Hope; Cover by Jim Lee; Variant cover by [Blizzard's own art superstar] Samwise Didier. You can also subscribe directly from DC for $23.99 for 12 issues, over at their page. There's some interesting concept art and some more cover images over there as well. And for the curious, the story summary of the first issue is after the jump.
When a human is found unconscious on the shores of Kalimdor, with no memory of who he is or how he arrived there, how will he survive? Enslaved by an Orc Shaman, he must fight for survival against members of both the Alliance and the Horde. Will he strike the uneasy balance with the other races he'll need to find the secrets of his past?
I probably won't be picking this one up; most tie-in comics aren't very good, and I personally don't tend to like Wildstorm's stuff. What about you guys?

Interesting Summary for the first issue. Any idea when this takes place?

When I first heard about a WoW comic I was pretty excited, but if this screenshot is any indication of the art then I'm also going to take a pass on it.
I wish they would use the art style that is used in the manuals, boxes, and so on from Blizzard as it really is in a class by itself.
But here's hoping that the story is THAT good and turns out to be an enjoyable read.

Actually, the art looks quite good. That piece of art is a promo piece ( Pretty rubbish methinks ) but the concept art:

Looks quite good actually. Very reminiscent of the style they use themselves, whilst more cartoon-ish. Click the pictured link and go to concept art at the bottom for more. Anime-ish eyes BTW.

The art I posted is by Jim Lee, who'll be doing the covers. The main artists for the series (or at least for #1) are Ludo Lullabi on pencils and Sandra Hope on inks; you can see some samples from Lullabi (not sure if it has Hope inks or not) at http://www.dccomics.com/dcunlimited/wow/?action=the_comic_art

In fact, I think I agree with Origin that the concept art > this Lee cover. Changing the post image accordingly.

Oh wow, a main character with amnesia? How fresh and original!

Lullabi's artwork is much better than what Lee did what that picture in this article. That looks like Rob Liefeld circa early-90s.

Oh, looks like the pic was changed. This is the artwork that looked like ass:

Walt Simonson wrote Thor in the 80's, and is widely considered to have written the best run on that comic outside of Jack Kirby. Having him on this book almost guarantees that it will at least be solid, unless he's just in it for the paycheck.

I sure hope there are special loot comics available for the lucky 1 out of ever 1,000,000 comics purchased.

I hate Jim Lee's art. It looks so dated now. Straight out of the early 90's, with no stylistic evolution. But he's just using his name to bring attention to the project, which is fine. If he was drawing the whole thing, I'd have instantly passed, but I might pick up an issue or two.

So it's the original Conan movie in Azeroth?
Heraclea Jul 23rd 2007 3:22PM
There was a preview leaflet at my comic book store last week. The interior art seems very manga-ish and manneristic, with characters with huge bug eyes, which IMO is wrong, wrong, wrong for WoW; but the architectural drawings (the Orgrimmar bridge; interior Ironforge) seemed spot-on.
viktorie Jul 23rd 2007 3:23PM
Actually, I take that back. It's more "Beastmaster" than Conan.
Urthona Jul 23rd 2007 3:27PM
Still, amnesia, enslavement, Jim Lee. I'm bored already.
Erica Olson Jul 23rd 2007 3:42PM
Ka-ching! Just one more way for Blizz to try to pry money out of my wallet. And it looks like the (IMO) awful animee style graphics and not the class I'd expect.
Sounds like a Planet of the Apes and the usual used ad nauseum amnesia plot.
What next, WoW - THE MOVIE?
Jalann Jul 23rd 2007 3:59PM
Shamans can Enslave now!?
NERF!
Amynnah Jul 23rd 2007 4:23PM
Somehow, and please, correct me if I'm wrong...
It would seem completely against the lore to have an Orc Shaman enslave a human. I don't think Shamans in general are into the whole "slavery" thing.
Warlocks, yes, but not Shamans.
And I like Jim Lee's art... just... not for WoW.
The Anime-esque stuff is pretty, but the style makes everyone look so youthful (although, honestly... I like seeing male Human eye-candy after the crappy looking male Humans in the game... I swear, Trolls are the only attractive males in the entire GAME).
So yeah... I'll probably drop by the comic store, flip through it, snicker, and then put it down.
Langerhans Jul 23rd 2007 4:39PM
I stand corrected... Seeing the art from the link that #4 provided it looks pretty good as I like that art style.
Hopefully the writing and story are just as interesting.

You all are so picky and jaded. Sad.
