WarCry on Zul'Aman and "logical loot"
The Zul'Aman preview information just doesn't stop. WarCry has a fairly in-depth rundown of the place which contains the following information of note that I haven't seen elsewhere:- Largely or entirely outdoors
- Each of the first four bosses should take 45 minutes to an hour to complete, making the raid very modular in terms of time -- spend an hour, down a boss, stop for the night if you want. This makes casual raiding much more of a possibility.
- The last two bosses, the Witch Doctor and Zul'Jin, have to be done at once, though.
- No associated faction; instead, faster boss kills will yield better rewards. "Blizzard fully expects this to become a competitive sport."
We were also told about a philosophical change at Blizzard, namely logical loot. Previously, the loot tables were somewhat random. They're not going back and fixing years of content, but now, players can expect creatures to drop things that one would expect. If that bad guy is holding a big, shiny axe, then odds are his loot is a big shiny axe.
This is pretty interesting. There have been some steps in that direction from the very beginning, with animal-type mobs carrying body-part vendor trash instead of coins, for instance, but I'm glad to see more attempts to make the game world coherent.

It always bothered me how I couldn't simply walk over and pluck the obviously not-going-to-be-used-by-him staff or other item from a freshly killed mob.
Maybe some of that will change, but I doubt it.

god forbid that anything in WoW should be coherent or logical. lol. about damn time...

Eliah,
The one thing that really bothers me about these Zul'Aman previews is that I feel like some things that have been SOP for World of Warcraft since its inception are being touted as innovations. Before this WarCry article, the most egregious example was the trolls ringing the drums for help- this is innovative behaviour? Seriously? Had no one writing these previews ever seen the 'XMonster calls out for help!' emote before?
Now we see the claim of "logical loot," which I find even more ridiculous. Loot in World of Warcraft has *always* been logical in precisely this sense. Darkmaster Gandling, Baron Rivendare, Ragnaros, Thunderaan, the Twin Emperors, Grand Widow Faerlina, Murmur, Kargath, Karathress... the list goes on, but all of these bosses drop the weapons they carry (or parts of them, in the case of Ragnaros).

Does this mean that, after we beat down some humanoid boss, we get 9-8 loot a pop? Shoes, pants, belt, shirt AND chest piece, bracers, gloves, rings, trinkets, weapon, wand/rifle/relic/whatever?
How about their mount? You know, unless we kill that too. ...but maybe a hunter could tame it instead.
No to all that? Well... Bah-humbug, good sir! I bite thine thumb at thee.

That's cool that you can actually get what they were using. It's always been annoying that some boss wears kickass looking armor, yet you don't get to loot it.

Guess that depends on how short the instance reset will be don't it? Given that you want to finish the instance.

Is it me, or is 45-60 minutes a boss on the long side?
If you look at Karazhan (assuming you're not massively under or overgeared):
Start to Attumen takes around 10-20 minutes.
Another 20 minutes to Moroes.
15 minutes to Maiden.
15 minutes to Opera.
30 minutes to Curator.
It's just Curator-Aran that horribly long (40 minutes or so)

Does anyone else but me feel that I've killed enough Trolls for quite a while? My Troll doesn't enjoy killing other Trolls!
Hank Jul 25th 2007 5:50PM
I saw logical loot and assumed that meant Shaman BoP items would no longer drop for groups that have no Shaman.
Gendou Jul 25th 2007 6:00PM
@8: Yeah, that's what I thought too. I mean, bosses have always dropped stuff that makes sense for them to be carrying. I was hoping that logical loot meant no more plate drops in a group with no plate wearers. It sucks to go through an entire instance and be forced to shard every single drop because no-one can even equip the items that drop.
Burning Adrenaline Jul 25th 2007 6:12PM
@8 I'm sick of killing Trolls in WoW. Sometimes it seems like I ever fight is Trolls. Then they release another Troll instance with Trolls taking on the aspects of animals. They've never had a Troll instance like that before! (Note sarcasm)
...but the loot system sounds nice.
Burning Adrenaline Jul 25th 2007 6:12PM
Make that @7
Dean Jul 25th 2007 8:17PM
Yeah that 45min-1hr is by no means short. Assuming each boss fight is about 10 minutes (which is generous), that means 35-50mins of trash between every boss...
ShadowFyre Jul 25th 2007 8:38PM
Heh, you know what makes sense in terms of logical loot? When you kill the cows in elwynn forest they drop glasses of milk :)
Orcucated Jul 25th 2007 9:43PM
lol got that damn straight ;)
Bearskunk Jul 26th 2007 4:57AM
In other words, a bear mount every run and as each boss drops a whole set of armour you can fully gear as many players as you down bosses? Sure, you might have to take some of the loot to a vendor first to repair it as you damaged it by killing that boss...
somehow I think the logical loot won't be as logical but rather stay the way it was all along.
Nuckels Jul 26th 2007 4:45AM
Hm for some reason i dont see this working out well but oh well.
Mask Jul 26th 2007 7:15AM
I think what this means is that if you fight the boss and he isnt wielding a weapon - he wont drop a weapon this time. He'll be dropping something else instead. But in that 10% of the time you see him spawned with an axe, he will fight with it and it will be one of his drops when killed.
Jonathon Pop Jul 26th 2007 8:58AM
oh you mean like in Everquest circa 1999? really new Idea here.......
bdo Jul 26th 2007 9:09AM
Work your way up to the first boss, take a look at him - "dang! that damn axe again, everyone out to reset instance."
