WoW subscriber levels over nine millionnnnn

So what's next? As Elizabeth said yesterday, there's no question that the Burning Crusade expansion kept players playing, and even brought lots of new players back to the game. There's also no question that this holiday season might be a tough one for keeping players hooked on a four-year-old game, as there are tons of new releases for all the platforms (Warhammer might be WoW's biggest challenger, but don't forget that Halo 3, the new Grand Theft Auto, and a ton of other games are going to vy for the same freetime that WoW takes up). But don't worry-- Drysc has a solution, and it's that they're going to start appealing to some of Earth's other populations. Cat subscribers for the win?

It's over 9000!!!!!!
Go to Youtube and search "Over 9000" and you'll understand. It's a popular quote from the anime "Dragonball Z."

PS: Thank you for referencing that! Very amused.
I was in a group the other day in which someone asked how much mana the mage had. He said, "I have just over 9000."
So, of course, I replied, "It's OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!" ... and no one understood. I QQ'd.

Warhammer would appear to be a newish and somewhat improved version of Dark Age of Camelot. If so, it will likely cannibalize the DAoC subscriber base and have little impact on WoW players. Blizzard owns the MMORPG segment for now and as long as it continuously improves WoW it has little to fear from competitors.
There is, however, room for niche competitors offering specialty products. MMORPGs with a Chinese or Indian ethos come to mind. Both cultures have long histories, rich mythologies, and unique visual appeal in architectural and other styles. Their time will come as both Indian and Chinese economies continue to grow at astonishing rates.
