How to normalize your Ventrilo settings

Every guild's Ventrilo has the one person who talks way too loud (usually a young and/or drunk person) and the one person who talks way too quietly (usually the raid leader, main healer, main tank, or someone else totally vital to the raid.) But luckily for us, Thrux of Darkspear has come up with a handy guide to normalize everyone's voice on Vent:
- Go to Setup
- Enable Direct Sound
- Select the SFX Button
- Select Compressor and click Add.
- Under Compressor Properties use the following settings:
Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use 15)
Attack = 0.01
Release = Around 500
Threshold = Around -30
Ratio = 100
Pre delay = 4.0 - Done!
Thrux explains exactly what each of the settings does in his post, but I've found that his recommendations work pretty well. I've been using them myself, and Vent is altogether a more pleasant and quiet place. Now if there were only settings to get rid of the "I'm so high" dude ...

I would love to do this in TS..!

Nice. Wish I had known all this 2 years ago. I've just been adjusting everyone manually (right-click someone on the list, go to effects, then volume, and adjust the slider).
Too bad that nobody's going to be using Vent once the new patch is released. I sure hope Blizzards new VOIP can do this automatically.

Everyone in raiding guilds are going to be using Ventrilo or TS still, since, if you DC, and have a vital role, how are you supposed to let people know?
Zghuk Aug 1st 2007 11:11AM
Ventrilo? What? ;-)
It seems that all European Users have TeamSpeak. At German Server Ventrilo is very rare.

Yeah I've been doing this for about 5 weeks or so. Its biggest benifit is for the person (there's at least one in every guild) with the horrifyingly loud mic that goes SCREEEEEEEEEEEECH!!!!! when he tries to talk and I used to have to rip off the headphones and throw them to save my ears.
I love you Thrux.

Can any of this be done on TS?

Ventrillo and TS sucks in comparison to Xbox Live. Why can't they make it easy to configure like your wireless phone, pick up and speak its that easy.
Every single guild's Vent or TS has problems and people blame the user, but hey stupid its the software thats crap.

@7, Xbox Live has the benefit of everybody having the exact same system and microphones designed specifically for this one task.
When you throw PCs that can be configured an infinite number of ways at micophones that can range from bad to worse to great, I'm frankly amazed that Vent and TS work as well as they do.
The vast amount of different hardware out there is what makes lots of configuration items necessary. Frankly, I'm very glad Vent offers directsound filters. The compresser has been saving my ears for years now.

SNORE
wake me up when you can do it on a mac.
Those vent mac devs are slackers.
Gazoo Aug 1st 2007 2:23PM
My vent server supports Mac and does it very well. WHat are you griping about.
vlad Aug 1st 2007 2:38PM
@9 SNORE
Wake me up when you get over the fact that the 4.6% marketshare (according to macworld)apple has in the US (2.4% worldwide) does not really act as a motivation to do things for mac's.
besides, they are probably spending all their time making the new MAC vent look pretty cause they know mac users prefer fashion before function :)

@4. You make it sound as if TS is all so new...I have both on my system, and have had for quite some time. Honestly, TS has more overhead and latency issues than Vent. It does have slightly better voice quality. Both are good programs overall, but I wouldn't tout it as if TS is the wave of the future.
Honestly, I prefer skype when working in small groups (5-Mans). A lot more work on the system, but far less latency, near-phone quality and a heck-of-a-lot nicer interface. Downside is that I only use it with my close friends (never in a PUG) and you are limited to the number of people that can connect at once.
@9...Macs suck. Get MS or Linux, but please don't expect a Mac to work properly...ever.

Oh man, i'm so high right now.

@12
Most ridiculous troll-like comment I've read yet. Macs simply work. The fact that the vent developers are slow on their progress on the vent mac beta has nothing to do with Mac OS X's functionality whatsoever.
The gripe about the lag on vent's mac development is a legitimate one. One should be able to point this out without being flamed.

this makes vent sound crappy for me
Safety Dancer Aug 2nd 2007 8:10AM
OMG, this worked sooo well. I have this one guy in vent that has a deeper voice then Satan. And it normalized him with one of my other guys. :') I'm soooo happy right now.

Worked well on the 5-7 people I heard last night. Some said I can finaly be heard and i did not touch my outging volume. Still have yet to hear how the other members sound that tend to peak out.
