Arcane Brilliance: Mages magicking BlizzCon
Arcane Brilliance is a little late today, but for a pretty good reason: I'm writing the column from the floor of the Anaheim Convention Center. Seeing as how we are coming to you live from BlizzCon, I thought it might be of interest to show you how mages are receiving the love from the Blizzard dev team. The first class panel didn't give us much in the way of new info on the mage, but there certainly were a lot of references to mages during the convention.Jeff Kaplan appears to play a mage, I say this because many times whenever he referenced a spell or ability, it invariably was tied to mage abilities in some way. A good example of this was his explanation of the new inscription profession, where he explained that you might add a knockback ability to your Fireball spell. Slip of the tongue perhaps? I'd love to think he plays a mage as his main and is there representing for the magic lovers.Speaking of Inscription, the addition of this profession to the game will definitely affect the mage as a class. The profession allows the crafter to affect spells and abilities, adding new effects to your original spells. I can only imagine that this will enable an entirely new level of pwnage for mages in both PvP and PvE environments. My personal interests lie in blending new schools of magic into my spells for added damage to elemental-based mobs. Imagine being able to tack on a nature damage bolt onto your Arcane Missiles. The possibilities are daunting when you consider how much power we might be able to have at our fingertips.
As the second class panel chugged along, not much was added to the original info provided. If you had followed along on our Liveblogging of the panel you'll know that mages did get slightly touched on during the panel. In the first place, it was mentioned in both class panels that the mages are the sandbox and playground for innovation. It is the mage class that the developers love to experiment with, and we have Invisibility and Spell Steal as a result.
It was also noted that although mages are considered the DPS kings, it was decided that they would more focus on the AOE damage, and the rogue would stand out as a single-target DPS master. I know this appears to be a bit challenging in instance situations, and definitely brings to mind the difficulties we have with mana efficiency in massive AOE fights. They are looking into changing Spirit as a stat, so perhaps this will improve the situation in the future.
Secondly, the question came up during the Q&A section of the second panel regarding the summoning of food and water. Tom Chilton's answer was brilliant: In the future mages will be able to summon a feast table to their location and group members will be able to get food from it, and yes we will have a water fountain. Huzzah! All in all, I came away with the feeling that mages are definitely respected by the development team, and that they will continue to read the forums as they look to improve the talents for us. From here on, the focus will be on the live content patches and how they will affect the class.

wow, you are happy about food/water?

Absolutely, I as a Mage tend to hold up my Raid/Group at every turn because I used all my Mana for making everyone consumables, or myself gems, or maybe I had to rebuff the entire raid, then there's always the chance that I was rezzed so I started all this without Mana. Just like that saying, "It ain't bragging if it's the truth." This isn't whining because it is a fact.

although mages are considered the DPS kings, it was decided that they would more focus on the AOE damage
Given the high volume of reports on mage dps being worse than warlocks, rogues, and shadow priests, I find this statement odd. Do they mean they should be the "DPS kings" or that they are still considered the Kings?
My personal experience is that we're not kings. I'm frequently out-dps'd by warriors and hunters, the hunters in similar gear and the warriors slightly better. Granted, I'm fairly new to raiding, but should a "king" really have to struggle against those not even in the big three (locks, mages, and rogues)?
As for AoE dominance, I'm not terribly thrilled about this emphasis. It's useful in only a handful of boss fights (only one that I've encountered) and not really necessary for progressing past mobs. Unless boss's summoning non-elites becomes the normal, I'm not feeling too excited about AoE kingship.

you've obviously never been a mage in the 40-mans.

I think that this writer was being over optimistic. They mentioned that they are going to buff our food/water abilities. This doesnt have me exited as we are being outdamaged by pretty much everyone and that is never really answered, i have no idea why shadowpriests were even brought up in the answer.
And about aoe, it is for gimmick fights and almost always seed of corruption is going to be better. I would lvoe for mages to be actually kind of something, but the devs just keep missing the point it seems.

This is RLY kinda disappointing. Mages have been bitching about their damage output compared to other class's and what do they give us? A stupid Food/water well. I think they need to take off that Tier 6 armor and look at the DMG meters in the armor that 95% of the mages out there are REALLY using. I think AOE is great and all but as previously mentioned, the utility is low, most of the time when you AOE in a raid you have a good chance of dying, and WTF is AOE going to get you in PVP? nothing..
A better question for the Dev's would have been: Why do all the class's in PVP have tons of stam yet mages spell DMG only went up a little? Any mage who has sat there and tried to kill anyone with 12k+ HP knows what I'm talking about.
GG blizz, keep blowing smoke in our faces. I say every mage needs to roll a rigged ass warlock till they fix the mages dmg output.

As a raiding rogue, top DPS on all raids and heroics i do, i can tell you one thing - if a mage is not in the top slot of the dps chart - he's a bad player or have really bad gear.
good mages should out dps me or be very close. When i see a mage whom i out dps by far - I'll try not to play with him again, or help him gearing if he's a guildy (and if your not familiar with heroic UB, no buff will help your poor mage soul).
For example, in the last Gruul raid, all top slots of my damagemeter were yellow and blueish. Mages and rogues pawned the place while the hunts and locks just cheered and tickled.
SO stop bitchin and go get your gears!
oh, and if a warrior out dps you - i strongly recommend a char transfer to SL. WOW is just not for you.

Yeah, a fix to water/food distribution is nice, reducing the mana cost of AB would also not hurt..
It makes me said as a mage when i look at damage tables and see all the mages behind the warlocks, hunters & rogues.
As for AOE, yes its nice for AOE grinding & for distroying lowbie instances, but in a real raid it serves no real purpose, sure we can probly kill the mobs a bit quicker; but only if there was no real danger from the in the first place.
Give the rogues some AOE let them be king of that if they like.. I want more power!!
Jewbacca Aug 5th 2007 9:03AM
If they want us to be the kings of AOE, why didn't we receive any talents and/or abilities in Burning Crusade to actually make that plausible?
Christian Stricker Aug 5th 2007 10:06AM
Of all the issues with all the classes in the game, you begin to complain about the mana cost of AB?
Puh-lease.

In my raiding guild the Mages keep up with (and sometimes surpass) the Rogue and Warlock DPS. So I don't know, but the Mages in the previous comments here need to seriously look to a different spec or gear or playstyle or something.
Rogue, Mage, and Warlcok DPS are supposed to be generally equal as has been stated by the Devs - and in my experience they certainly are in a raid environment.
And Mages ARE already kings of AOE. There are some fights where properly-specced Mages excel against multi targets and some fights where AOE is useless, and thats exactly the way it SHOULD be. Adjust your play style to compensate.
The water/food situation will be a huge improvement too...even though it might seem trivial to non-raiding Mages, it will be very welcome to have a 'soulwell' type fountain or whatever it is.
Apartheid Aug 5th 2007 11:52AM
Hey, at least you guys are mentioned for your DPS.
Hunters like myself only provide traps and Misdirect as according to Blizzard~ :|
Chip Aug 5th 2007 12:35PM
_ANY_ DPS class has the potential to be at the top of the damage meter. Whether or not they are comes down to gear, spec, and the ability of the player to play his class. I'm a decently geared lock and I'm usually at the top of the list, but there are some rogues and mages that top me whenever they're in my group. I don't qq about it, I just try harder.
Todd Aug 5th 2007 5:15PM
Time and time again, the developers still have no idea what direction they want the Mage. AoE generates tons of aggro, so how do the Devs intend to mitigate this when they want to turn the Mage into an AoE force? I wouldn't call Invisibility the greatest new spell added to the Mage repertoire, considering the nerfs tacked on. The top tier mage talents need some serious consideration, especially the frost tree.
Tonio Aug 5th 2007 6:42PM
@11
Well, then either your rogues and locks suck, or they are badly undergeared.
If you'd put a naked lock and a naked mage trough a dps test, they'd probably be equal, but lock spells scale far better then mage spells. As a result of this, the better the gear gets, the worse mages start to peform compared to other dps classes.
Rogues scale in a different manner, it heavily depends on the weapons they find. That's why comparing scaling between casters and melee is quite difficult, but generally, rogues these days should outdps mages after a certain gear level
Besides this, most bossfights in tbc require a lot of movement, and that favours locks a lot compared to mages. Mages do no dps at all while moving, while locks still have their dots ticking.
Also silences favour locks compared to mages. But these are not as common as having to walk a lot during a bossfight
Also we have big mana issues (which isn't getting any better with the longer and longer bossfights we seem to be getting), which we can solve by giving up even more dps for spirit.
I don't mind having some of the downsides, but come on, they could atleast fix one of the issues.
It's nice and all that we're the testbed for the devs, but can't they atleast try buffing us? :P
Todd Aug 5th 2007 7:05PM
@Tonio
I agree completely with everything you said.
Hitman Aug 5th 2007 11:35PM
@7.DeZo
maybe u need to l2p a rogue better. Good rogues and good warriors will do more dmg than me (mage). And b4 u say nething... im a good mage who does more than his fair share of dps.
It is well known that warrior and rogue gear (and even lock gear) scales far better than mage gear - meaning late game - they will be putting out the most dmg.
but hey.. im not whinging - i think mages are a solid class. i dont think we need ne massive buffs tho i would like to see a few other classes get a nerf... lawl.

Let us Priests know what respect feels like.
I bet it's fluffy and smells like cookies.
Aeliansus Aug 6th 2007 9:02PM
I've got a lvl 70 fire mage on Malfurion server. My guildies love having me in their groups. While I may not always be tops on dmg, I'm at least second place. If a player gears up in accordance w/ their spec, they should be fine. And w00t for banquet table and water fountain!!! I'm tired of having to spend 30 min before Kara runs making food and water.
squishy Aug 21st 2007 1:24AM
i dont know why you think mages are getting any love from the developers. when its been nerf after nerf to the one and only class i loved to play.
giving us food/waterwell is not love.
they just took away our primary dps role and gave it to everyone else, thats not love.
so we are aoe kings and how often is aoe being used, thats not love.
they are slowly trying to make the mage calss undesirable so more people will turn to other classes, thats not love.
they give us the most umcomprehensible unjustifiable justifications for these nerf "mages = jaw dropping ZOMG dmg", thats not love.
when asked about mage coeff tax they say we will nerf Spriests, thats not love (to either).
they have given us the most horribly mana expensive aoe spells and call us kings of aoe, thats not love.
they give us comparable dps to rogues and locks (supposedly) and yet give us the lowest hp, thats not love.
sad sad day for mages
